fix(ui): show sidebar toggle at tablet drawer widths - #1368
Restores a working sidebar toggle in the viewport window where the docs sidebar is drawn as a drawer, and lets the drawer be closed there. Fixes the breakpoint mismatch introduced with the #1140/#1142 zoom fix.
_styles_project.scss (only file changed): two new rules, scoped to the md–lg window, placed after the theme rules so they win the cascade at equal specificity:
.td-sidebar-nav collapses by default in md–lg and is shown only on .show / .collapsing (the normal Bootstrap collapse states).
.td-sidebar__toggle is displayed in that window, so the hamburger/X control exists wherever the sidebar is a drawer.
No theme file touched: _sidebar-tree.scss is left as-is, so behavior at < md (closed drawer + toggle) and >= lg (static sidebar column) is byte-for-byte unchanged.
Why
Docsy handles md and up as "desktop": it hides .td-sidebar__toggle and forces .td-sidebar-nav open. But the #1142 zoom fix re-renders the sidebar as a stacked full-width drawer up to 991.98px. The two disagree between 768 and 991.98px: drawer is positioned as an overlay, nav is forced open, and the toggle that could close it is hidden — the drawer just cannot be dismissed. Overshooting into down(lg) without re-scoping, rather than re-opening the theme file, keeps this fix additive: it only patches the window where the two components disagree.
Testing
hugo build passes locally.
Chrome, Firefox: at 937px (and across 768–991px):
sidebar closed by default, hamburger visible;
hamburger opens the drawer (icon → X, aria-expanded="true"), X closes it (aria-expanded="false");
no width in 768–991px where the drawer is open but untoggleable.
Regression: <768px (drawer + toggle as before) and ≥992px (static sidebar column, no toggle, nav always visible) unchanged; also spot-checked at 150% browser zoom on a 1920px window ([UI] Docs layout breaks when browser zoom is increased #1140 scenario).

Notes
Drawer rules in _styles_project.scss are deliberately narrow and unit-checked against _resizable-bootstrap-overrides.scss (which defines the md–lg drawer) — no collision with any other project CSS.
Happy to move the rules into _resizable-bootstrap-overrides.scss instead if that's the preferred location; I kept them in _styles_project.scss because they're project-level overrides, not part of that file's layout math.

Nice catch, and the diagnosis is exactly right: the drawer stacking from _resizable-bootstrap-overrides.scss below lg, combined with the theme forcing the nav open at md and up, left the 768-991px window with an open drawer and no toggle. The two new rules target that window precisely, and the before/after screenshots at 937px show the fix working.
One structural concern, in the inline comment: importing the whole project fork of _sidebar-tree.scss pulls in more than the drawer fix. Nothing on master imports that file (the theme compiles its own td/_sidebar-tree.scss from Docsy v0.14.3), and the fork is stale against it - 175 lines against the theme's 214. Importing it last means every divergence goes live, not just the two rules you changed. Two concrete examples: the fork sets padding-top 4rem plus a tertiary background on .td-sidebar at md and up, where the theme sets margin-top to the navbar height with no background; and the fork hard-codes the tree-root border as #ccc where the theme uses the tertiary color token, which will read wrong in dark mode. Either scope just the two drawer rules into _styles_project.scss as suggested, or re-sync the fork with v0.14.3 first so the import carries no surprises. If you take the scoped-rules route, the fork file goes back to being unreferenced - worth deleting it or noting why it stays, so the next reader is not misled.
One question, not a blocker: the three PNGs under .prscreenshot/1359/ have no precedent on master and nothing references that directory. Are committed screenshots the intended convention here, or were they meant as review evidence only? If the latter, leaving them out keeps binary weight out of the repo.
The drawer rules themselves look right, and the comments explaining the breakpoint mismatch are clear. Fix the import scope and this is good to go.

Importing the whole _sidebar-tree.scss fork activates every divergence from the theme's Docsy v0.14.3 copy, not just the drawer fix - for example the fork's padding-top 4rem plus tertiary background on .td-sidebar at md and up (theme: margin-top at navbar height, no background) and its hard-coded #ccc tree-root border (theme: tertiary color token). Scope just the two drawer rules here instead, so only the intended change ships:
Suggested change
// Sidebar drawer rules live here, not in the theme files they duplicate
// (see #1171). Imported last so the override rules inside win the cascade.
@import"_sidebar-tree.scss";
// Drawer fix, scoped to the md-lg window where the sidebar is stacked
// full-width: keep only these two rules here so the stale fork in
// _sidebar-tree.scss is not pulled into the build.
@includemedia-breakpoint-up(md) {
@includemedia-breakpoint-down(lg) {
.td-sidebar-nav {
display: none !important;
&.show,
&.collapsing {
display: block !important;
}
}
.td-sidebar__toggle {
display: block !important;
}
}
}
These land after the theme rules in the cascade, so at equal specificity they win inside md-lg and the theme rules still govern at lg and up.

Done in 93c9236: the import is gone and only the two drawer rules (.td-sidebar-nav collapse + .td-sidebar__toggle) live in _styles_project.scss, exactly as suggested. _sidebar-tree.scss is restored to master and unreferenced.

Address CodeRabbit and rahmanaisha review on PR layer5io#1368: keep theme rules for md+ (nav visible at lg+), scope only the two drawer rules into _styles_project.scss instead of importing the stale _sidebar-tree.scss fork (Fixeslayer5io#1359)
CodeRabbit (major): the theme's @include media-breakpoint-up(md) { display: block !important; } rule in _sidebar-tree.scss is back untouched, so the nav is visible at lg+ exactly as before — no dedicated media-breakpoint-up(lg) block needed once the fork reverts.
@rahmanaisha: took the scoped-rules route — _styles_project.scss now holds only the two drawer rules (.td-sidebar-nav collapse handling + .td-sidebar__toggle) inside the md–lg window, the @import "_sidebar-tree.scss" is removed, and the fork file is restored to master (no longer referenced by the build).
Also dropped the .prscreenshot/ PNGs from the tree (0bdc869) — they were review evidence only, not repo content; before/after shots can go up as PR attachments instead if wanted.

Thank you, @yashspidey, for the work.
Could you investigate why these CSS properties require !important to take effect?
Rather than relying on !important, I would suggest identifying and addressing the root cause so that we can apply these styles without it.
This would help avoid potential CSS specificity conflicts and make the styles easier to maintain in the future.
