docs(kanvas): document whiteboard behaviour changed by the capture-defect fixes - #1369
Document the user-visible whiteboard behaviour that the Kanvas capture-defect fixes change (Pencil over components, connector start and snapping, label editing after a drop, animations on containers, Annotations layer keeping containers), to merge with the Kanvas release that ships them.
What Changed
Understanding Tool Modes (designer/understanding-tool-modes): the Pencil tab now says a stroke can start, run and end over a component, and that pressing on a component with the Pencil active draws instead of moving it. The Pen tab adds a third behaviour: pressing on a component and dragging starts the connector from that component, and the connector follows it when it moves. It also states that connectors snap to the component under the cursor, never to a Pencil stroke around it and never back onto the component they started from.
Whiteboarding and Canvas Objects: dropping a shape leaves later clicks and keystrokes with the canvas, so you double-click the shape to label it and press Escape or click elsewhere to finish. A dropped text box opens for typing straight away and is outlined while it has the keyboard. Canvas Objects now says both the drag route and the T shortcut put the cursor in the new textbox. A new "Animating Components" section covers Node Animation: blink, ripple, bounce and pulse; it works on containers such as a Deployment; animations replay when the design is opened, switching to a new one starts it immediately, and none start when the system asks for reduced motion.
Layout and Layers: the Annotations toggle now says that turning annotations off hides whiteboard elements but keeps a workload's containers with it, and that turning them back on leaves every component where it was. Note: the branch also adds three empty, accidentally created files at the repo root (content_en_kanvas_designer_canvas-objects_index.md, content_en_kanvas_designer_understanding-tool-modes_index.md, content_en_kanvas_designer_whiteboarding_index.md). Delete them before merging.
Risk Assessment
✅ Low: The change only edits three Markdown pages. I checked each new claim against the Kanvas fix commits: a6d8ab158 (annotation layer and connector start), f8ed85aa3 (Pencil over components, stroke-free snapping, label editing) and de27dddfb (animations on containers). They match, and the round-1 fixes ("behaves differently depending upon where" and the animation-switching wording) are correct.
Testing
I built the docs site with the repo's pinned Hugo and PostCSS, served it locally and drove the three changed pages in a browser, including clicking the Pencil and Pen tabs and expanding the Connector Behaviors section. Five screenshots show every new paragraph rendering cleanly in the site theme. The Escape key is styled, the Animating Components heading has its anchor, and the Pen bullet and snapping note sit inside the collapsible section. A heading diff confirmed no existing anchors were renamed. Everything rendered correctly. I could not run the described Kanvas behaviours themselves, because the Kanvas release that ships them is not available in this workspace. The temporary build output and the local server were removed afterwards.

ℹ️ content/en/kanvas/designer/whiteboarding/index.md:74 - Running npm run lint (markdownlint-cli2 with no config file, so default rules) on the changed pages reports 5 new MD013 line-length hits and 2 new MD033 inline-HTML <kbd> hits. They are in the added paragraphs of whiteboarding/index.md (lines 74, 82, 86) and understanding-tool-modes/index.md (lines 47, 78). They match how these pages are already written: one line per paragraph, and <kbd> already used on the page. The base versions already carry 241 hits of the same kinds, and markdownlint does not run in any CI workflow. I left them alone because wrapping only the new lines would mix two styles on one page. Follow-up: add a repository .markdownlint-cli2 config that turns off MD013/MD033/MD060 to match the house style, or adopt a site-wide wrap, so npm run lint gives useful results.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Clarified that the T shortcut places a textbox near the canvas center and immediately enables typing.
Updated guidance on hiding annotations, drawing over components without moving them, and connecting to components with the Pen.
Explained how shape drops, component drops, double-clicks, and text-box editing behave.
Added details about Node Animation effects, supported objects, replay, switching animations, pacing, and reduced-motion behavior.
Clarified how design merges match components, handle duplicate resources and relationships, preserve existing configuration and positions, add annotations, and report failures. Also noted that repeating a merge adds nothing, unlike copy/paste or duplication.

Summary
Canvas tool and connector guidance content/en/kanvas/designer/canvas-objects/index.md, content/en/kanvas/designer/understanding-tool-modes/index.md
The guides clarify textbox placement and typing, Pencil strokes over components, and Pen connector behavior.
Whiteboarding and animation instructions content/en/kanvas/designer/whiteboarding/index.md
The guide explains what happens after dropping shapes and components, how to edit text boxes, and how Node Animation works.
The By type description clarifies that disabling Annotations hides whiteboard elements while workload containers remain visible, and that re-enabling annotations leaves components in place.
The remaining issues are low-impact documentation ambiguity and lint failures. Clarify repeated annotation merges and wrap the affected paragraphs before merging.

This is a clean companion to the Kanvas capture-defect fixes: every new sentence lands on the page a reader would already be on, and the pages agree with each other - the T shortcut puts the cursor in the textbox on both Canvas Objects and Whiteboarding, and Escape-or-click-elsewhere finishes both a shape label and a textbox. Rewriting the Pen intro to drop the count was the right call now that there are three behaviors, and the snapping rule (never to a Pencil stroke, never back to the start component) states the exact trap the fix removes.
Two things before merge:
The three empty files at the repo root (content_en_kanvas_designer_canvas-objects_index.md, content_en_kanvas_designer_understanding-tool-modes_index.md, content_en_kanvas_designer_whiteboarding_index.md) need deleting, as the description already notes.
DCO shows action_required at review time, so the commits need sign-off before this can merge. Build and triage are green.
Nothing else needed: the four real pages are the whole change, and the screenshots plus the heading-anchor check in the description cover the rendering risk well.
Select a component or shape and choose **Node Animation** in its tooltip to draw attention to it: blink, ripple, bounce or pulse. Animations work on containers such as a Deployment as well as on single components, and they play again when the design is opened. Switching from one animation to another starts the new one straight away. They run at a calm pace, and Kanvas starts none when your system asks for reduced motion.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
One small question, non-blocking: "They run at a calm pace" is the only phrase in this paragraph a reader cannot act on - is there a concrete duration or speed behind it, or could the phrase be dropped? The rest of the paragraph is concrete (replay on open, switching starts the new one at once, reduced motion respected), so it stands fine without it.

Use explicit keyboard-focus wording.
“Leaves your next click and keystrokes with the canvas and the tools” and “while it has the keyboard” are ambiguous. State which element has keyboard focus so users can predict where input goes.
As per coding guidelines, documentation must be clear, concise, and accessible.

Wrap the merge-description paragraph in the Markdown file at the repository’s
configured line-length limit to resolve the MD013 finding, preserving its exact
wording and rendered text.
**Merge into current** combines the two designs. Every component and relationship from the dropped design is added to the design you already have open. The block's top-left corner moves to the drop position when you dropped a file. Otherwise it lands 50 pixels right and 50 pixels down from its original coordinates, and it can overlap existing components. Every component and relationship in the incoming design receives a new identifier. Kanvas does not match or de-duplicate against existing components, so merging the same design twice doubles its components. Names, kinds, configuration, styles, and the internal layout of the incoming block are preserved. The incoming design's name, id, version, visibility, catalog data, layer preferences, and workspace are not carried over. Relationship evaluation runs as for any edit, and autosave persists the result after three seconds. If the merged design exceeds your plan's component limit, the save fails and the merged components remain unsaved on the canvas. Merging needs no permission key, but the incoming design must be one you can read: your own, public, published, or shared with you. Cancel on a merge prompt does not delete a design the import already saved. A failed merge shows `Failed to merge design: <reason>`.
**Merge into current** combines the two designs. Components from the dropped design are added to the design you already have open, except those the open design already holds: a component with the same model, kind, namespace and name is matched to the existing one instead of being added again, and so is a second copy of one resource inside the dropped design. The open design keeps its own configuration and position for a matched component, relationships that pointed at an incoming component point at the one it matched, and a relationship that would duplicate an existing one is not added. Annotations (shapes, text, pencil strokes and other whiteboard elements) are always added. The block's top-left corner moves to the drop position when you dropped a file. Otherwise it lands 50 pixels right and 50 pixels down from its original coordinates, and it can overlap existing components. Every added component and relationship receives a new identifier. Merging the same design twice adds nothing the second time. Copying and pasting, or duplicating a selection, still makes copies. Clarify repeated merges for annotations.
The paragraph says annotations are always added, then says that merging the same design twice adds nothing. For a design with annotations, these statements conflict. State separately whether repeated merges suppress components and relationships while adding annotations.

- **Canvas-connect Behavior**: When you click an empty spot on the canvas, and drag to an existing component, you get an annotation edge relationship.
- **Start on a component**: When you press on a component and drag, the connector starts from that component and follows it when it moves.
Connectors snap to the component under the cursor, never to a Pencil stroke drawn around it, and never back onto the component they started from. Pressing on a Pencil stroke or a connector's end point starts the connector from the component underneath it; a Pencil stroke is never either end of a connector.

Intent
Document the user-visible whiteboard behaviour that the Kanvas capture-defect fixes change (Pencil over components, connector start and snapping, label editing after a drop, animations on containers, Annotations layer keeping containers), to merge with the Kanvas release that ships them.
What Changed
designer/understanding-tool-modes): the Pencil tab now says a stroke can start, run and end over a component, and that pressing on a component with the Pencil active draws instead of moving it. The Pen tab adds a third behaviour: pressing on a component and dragging starts the connector from that component, and the connector follows it when it moves. It also states that connectors snap to the component under the cursor, never to a Pencil stroke around it and never back onto the component they started from.Escapeor click elsewhere to finish. A dropped text box opens for typing straight away and is outlined while it has the keyboard. Canvas Objects now says both the drag route and theTshortcut put the cursor in the new textbox. A new "Animating Components" section covers Node Animation: blink, ripple, bounce and pulse; it works on containers such as a Deployment; animations replay when the design is opened, switching to a new one starts it immediately, and none start when the system asks for reduced motion.content_en_kanvas_designer_canvas-objects_index.md,content_en_kanvas_designer_understanding-tool-modes_index.md,content_en_kanvas_designer_whiteboarding_index.md). Delete them before merging.Risk Assessment

They are in the added paragraphs of whiteboarding/index.md (lines 74, 82, 86) and understanding-tool-modes/index.md (lines 47, 78). They match how these pages are already written: one line per paragraph, and<kbd>already used on the page. The base versions already carry 241 hits of the same kinds, and markdownlint does not run in any CI workflow. I left them alone because wrapping only the new lines would mix two styles on one page. Follow-up: add a repository.markdownlint-cli2config that turns off MD013/MD033/MD060 to match the house style, or adopt a site-wide wrap, sonpm run lintgives useful results.✅ **Push** - passed
