NoteAddingMode has two defaults:

  1. The member initializer in the command:
    NoteAddingMode mode = NoteAddingMode::CurrentChord;

  2. def in the contract:
    static constexpr NoteAddingMode def = NoteAddingMode::CurrentChord;

When is each one used?

member initializer is used; def in the contract: was needed for use without typed commands—it will likely be removed.

Walkthrough

The command framework adds typed command contracts, field and enum conversions, and typed dispatch. Menu and toolbar models can carry command parameters. Val adds optional and generic type conversions, and command data type declarations are updated. MCP schemas now represent type formats, and Int64 values are serialized as strings. A constructor is also added to MnemonicString.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 1e966

The typed command helpers for menus and toolbars cannot be used as written because they fail to compile, and MCP clients can see string Int64 values that contradict the advertised schema. A malformed numeric string argument can throw out of the typed request handler instead of returning a bad-arguments error. These should be fixed before merge, but the problems are localized and not yet triggered by existing callers.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "added enum contract and typed command" matches the main change. The PR adds a new enum contract header (enumcontract.h) and a typed-command bridge (typedcommand.h), with tests and dispatcher and menu integration. The title is specific and describes the primary change, though it does not mention the related DataType, Val, and MCP schema updates.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is missing. The author provided no description, and the PR template is not filled in. The template requires a linked issue (Resolves: #NNNNN), a short description of the changes and their motivation, and the checklist. None of these items appear, so the description is largely incomplete.

Resolution

Add a description that explains the motivation for the enum contract and typed command changes and what problem they solve. Replace the Resolves placeholder with an issue number or link, or state that no issue exists. Complete the checklist, including the CLA, commit, testing, and AI-assistance items. Also list the AI tools used, if any were used. Document the broader changes too, including the DataType renames in commandtypes.h, the Val doTo*/toType/fromType additions, the Params changes, and the MCP schema and format changes. Those changes affect other consumers.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 4.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 50 functions across 18 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

doToInt, doToInt64 and doToDouble throw or truncate instead of returning nullopt.

These functions return std::optional so that callers can detect bad input. The String cases at Lines 128, 151 and 174 call std::stoi, std::stoll and std::stod. These functions throw std::invalid_argument or std::out_of_range for input such as "abc".

toType<int>() calls doToInt. internal::fromVal calls toType<int>(). The typed onRequest lambda in icommanddispatcher.h calls fromInputParams without a try block. mcpserver.cpp turns JSON strings into Val strings. A client can therefore send "abc" for an integer field. The exception then leaves the typed request handler, which expects BadArgs.

Numeric inputs have a similar problem:

  • static_cast<int>(double) is undefined behavior for out-of-range values (Line 125).
  • static_cast<int64_t>(double) has the same problem (Line 148).
  • static_cast<int>(int64_t) truncates without notice (Line 124).
  • MCP numbers always arrive as Double (toVal in mcpserver.cpp), so 1.9 becomes 1.

Catch the parse exceptions and return std::nullopt. Also reject numbers that are out of range or not whole. Sketch:

case Type::String: {
    try {
        size_t pos = 0;
        const std::string& str = std::get<std::string>(m_val);
        int v = std::stoi(str, &pos);
        return pos == str.size() ? std::optional<int>(v) : std::nullopt;
    } catch (const std::exception&) {
        return std::nullopt;
    }
}

Container and number_t branches in toType and fromType never match.

These if constexpr conditions are always false:

  • std::is_same<T, std::vector<T> > is false for every T, because a type cannot equal a vector of itself.
  • std::is_same<T, std::map<std::string, T> > is false for the same reason.
  • std::is_same<T, number_t<T> > is false for every T.

So toType<std::vector<int>>() and fromType(std::vector<int>{}) reach the static_assert and fail to compile. The container bodies are dead code. The number_t branch in toType would also recurse into toType<T>() without end if it were taken.

float also has no branch, so Val::fromType<float> and Val::toType<float> fail to compile. internal::dataType<float> in typedcommand.h still advertises DataType::Float, so a float field breaks the build.

Detect the container types with trait specializations, and add a float branch. This sketch shows the approach for the vector case:

template<typename T> struct is_std_vector : std::false_type {};
template<typename U, typename A> struct is_std_vector<std::vector<U, A> > : std::true_type { using value_type = U; };

// in toType<T>():
} else if constexpr (is_std_vector<T>::value) {
    using Item = typename is_std_vector<T>::value_type;
    // convert each element with item.toType<Item>()
}

Use the same pattern for std::map<std::string, U> and for number_t<U>.

Return a defined value after UNREACHABLE in str_val.

UNREACHABLE logs and then calls assert() through ASSERT_X. When NDEBUG is defined, assert() is removed. The function then ends without a return, which is undefined behavior for a value-returning function.

The path is reachable when C::table omits an enumerator, or when an out-of-range integer is cast to the enum type. toVal calls Contract<T>::str_val(val) for enum types, so such a value reaches this function. toVal does not check the returned string, so the empty string from the fix below is passed on as a parameter value.

Add a return after the macro. An empty string is one defined result.

Assert the result of fromInputParams.

Both tests ignore the returned bool. A conversion failure would then show up only as a value mismatch, or not at all. For example, a field left at its default that equals the expected value passes silently.

Add EXPECT_TRUE(...) here. Also add negative tests for these cases:

  • A missing required field.
  • An unknown enum string.
  • A wrong value type.

Each of these should return false.

The dataType container branches never match, and float fields do not compile.

std::is_same<T, std::vector<T> > and std::is_same<T, std::map<std::string, T> > are always false. A std::vector<...> or std::map<...> field reaches the static_assert instead of returning DataType::List or DataType::Map.

A float field passes dataType and returns DataType::Float. It then fails in internal::toVal, because Val::fromType<float> has no float branch. It also fails in internal::fromVal, because Val::toType<float> has no float branch.

Replace the container checks with trait specializations. Then add float support to Val::toType and Val::fromType. Alternatively, remove the float mapping.

Int64 values conflict with the advertised schema.

toMcpJsonValue now serializes Int64 as a JSON string. toMcpTypeSchema in mcpcontroller.cpp (Line 39) still declares Int64 as type: "integer" with format: "int64". Tool results (structuredContent) with a string in an integer property do not match the outputSchema. A client that validates results rejects them.

The same function also serializes minimum and maximum for Int64 arguments as strings. JSON Schema requires numbers for these keywords.

Make the schema and the serialization agree. One option is to map CT::Int64 to TypeSchema{ MT::String, MF::Int64 }. Then do not emit minimum and maximum as strings. Alternatively, serialize Int64 as a JSON number.

Typed makeMenuItem uses a member that does not exist.

The TypedCommand concept requires C::command. It does not require id. This template calls command.id at Lines 139 and 141. Any instantiation fails to compile, because no typed command has an id member. ICommandDispatcher::dispatch correctly uses command.command.

Use C::command.

Typed makeItem uses a member that does not exist.

The TypedCommand concept requires C::command. It does not require id. This template calls command.id at Lines 151 and 153. Any instantiation fails to compile. This is the same defect as in AbstractMenuModel::makeMenuItem.

Use C::command.

🐛 Proposed fix
         if constexpr (rcommand::HasInput<C>) {
-            return makeItem(command.id, rcommand::toInputParams(command), title);
+            return makeItem(C::command, rcommand::toInputParams(command), title);
         } else {
-            return makeItem(command.id, title);
+            return makeItem(C::command, title);
         }

lines 147 - 155:
Update the TypedCommand overload of makeItem to use C::command instead of
command.id in both branches, preserving the input-parameter conversion for
commands with input.
