Steps to reproduce

  1. Install this app
    https://f-droid.org/pl/packages/com.github.tmo1.sms_ie/
    Probably other apps can be used too.
  2. Open and try to export messages or contacts
  3. Choose nextcloud app (from left bar)
  4. Choose any dir in nextcloud app
  5. Press button Save
  6. You will see message "File couldn't be saved" (I am using polish version, so original english message can be different).
  7. File was created on the server, but file is empty (0b)

Expected behaviour

File should be uploaded without errors

Actual behaviour

File is not saved on the server

I have this problem since one or two months.

I updated nextcloud server and reinstalled Nextcloud android app and problem still exists.

    Thats exactly the regression I experience.
    
Downgraded to 34.0.0 and it fixed it.

    Yep, broken for me too. All apps that access Nextcloud storage can no longer upload since upgrading to 34.0.1 earlier this week. The apps will detect they don't have access, error out, and a 0KB file is created on the server side for whatever the app was trying to do.

    I have the same issue when opencam tries to store files on my nextcloud. Pease release a hot fix without the SAF to Nextcloud the App is nearly useless.

    I tried the QA APK and I was able to export files in the FitoTrack app directly to NC via the Files app. That wouldn't work in 34.0.1. I also use the app SMS Backup & Restore and it still fails to access NC storage. I'm on LineageOS (22) and I've always selected a location using the Files app, which lets me select NC as a storage location and then I select my desired upload folder from there. I'm still getting 0KB files, and the app errors saying it can't access the storage.

    via #17157 but still appears in your logs. Probably because of the DocumentStorageProvider implementation.
    

    Is it possible to share screen-recording? Thus maybe I can try to reproduce it.

    It's also the case with Signal backups. It's quite critical as the NX app serves as sink for data you want replicated outside your phone.

I can confirm that Aegis backup works.
    
I can confirm that Signal backup works. I did however had a first "crash"/"error" (i.e. Signal unexpectedly closes), however I do not see anything from the logs and it worked fine afterwards.
    

    Do you know if there is any ETA on this patch for the release channel ?

    I testet this qa build https://github.com/nextcloud/android/actions/runs/29229970414/artifacts/8271302996 but it doesn't work. Open Camera says "Error wile Saving" but what's interesting. Everytime I open the Storage provider Folder it wants the access grant. If I grant access I see the files. But If I reopen the Location I'll be asked to grant Permission on this Folder.

    The Log is from 17270
    
Frist I install the Apk then I do a start and log in into my Server instance.
    
After successfully connected I open openCamera go to settings - more cam settings - storage
    
Android File Manager pops up. I open Nextcloud qa - folder Talk then I have to permit access
    

    After that the Location information is saved on Open Cam. If I try to make a photo then, I get the error that the image could not be saved. If I reopen the dialog I see grant access again
    

    Hä but not today now I am able to upload the image 🤔

    @alperozturk96 Apologies on the late response, I was away from home for a few days. I installed the latest QA build in the PR and the SMS Backup & Restore app still fails. I'd make a video, but I'm hesitant to because I'm unable to redact my server address from the recording. Steps to reproduce:

    2. Setup a new backup. If you have lots of SMS messages, backup only "Call logs" and it'll be fast.
      3. 

    3. Set the backup location by browsing to Nextcloud QA as the provider and to some folder.
      4. 

    4. Trigger a backup. It should fail almost immediately.
      5.

    I'm still having issues with Signal backups, SMS Backup & Restore work fine now. I do have a large backup, but I'd be curious if anyone else could test it. Here's how I'm creating the backup:
    

      

    1. Configure a backup, using the On-device option.
      2. 

    2. Select Nextcloud QA as the storage provider and selecting a folder on my server.
      3. 

    3. Note all my recovery keys, etc.
      4. 

    4. First backup is immediately triggered. It will complete without an error in Signal. But if you look over the files server side, many of them will be 0KB.

I had to trim thousands of lines since it's too big for gist directly and it's just repeating the same stuff over and over I believe anyway.
    

    Edit: It just took a long time to upload the files. I had to let my phone sit for a long time and restart the NC qa app a few times for it to finish syncing. I did notice that at the end it still fails to upload the files called "files" and "main", which are a critical component of the backup. I'll attach a log later of this on when an incremental backup is triggered.
    

    Edit 2: Aaand, it finished the entire backup with those last two remaining files after a bit more waiting. I just need to be patient.

    Is this actually fixed? I still saw lots of people complaining that it did not work even after trying the QA build for #17270.
    

    Can anyone who reported here that they were seeing this issue confirm that it is now working?

    Running v35.0.1 and trying to use Nextcloud with HealthConnect backups. Nextcloud can be selected from the provider list. Selecting any folder results in Health Connect.zip files with zero bytes. Feels a lot like this bug.
    

    Supposed fix #17270 does not have a milestone tag but assume it would be part of 35.0.1?
    

    @tobiasKaminsky can you re-open or do you want a new issue for the remaining problem?
