Two changes that together turn the security audit green on main: wasmtime and wasmtime-wasi go from 49.0.2 to 49.0.3, and the one yanked crate that cannot be replaced from here is registered with an expiry date.

1. wasmtime 49.0.3

Clears the 13 advisories RUSTSEC-2026-0352 to RUSTSEC-2026-0364 that turned cargo audit red on main.

The "49" requirement in the root Cargo.toml already permits the patch, so the only files that move besides the changelog are Cargo.lock, which changes 32 packages (all of them the wasmtime release itself, wasmtime*, wasmtime-internal-*, pulley-*, wiggle*, and the cranelift-* 0.136.2 → 0.136.3 crates it pins to), and the audit wiring below.

  • RUSTSEC-2026-0352, wasmtime-wasi: renaming a symlink whose name ends in a slash escapes the directory a guest was given. It is listed for macOS and FreeBSD hosts only, and the plugin host preopens no directory (runtime::build_store), so a plugin has nothing to escape from.
  • The other twelve, wasmtime: mostly host panics in the component-model and async paths, a stack overflow dropping a long chain of recursive types, an async-entrypoint requirement that is not enforced, component-model handle tables capped per instance and charged to no limit, and exception tags that can leave host data structures unaligned.

The host runs plugins synchronously as wasm32-wasip1 modules, which keeps it away from most of those paths. I have not established for each one whether a plugin can reach it, and the sandbox is what they are about, so this does not wait on that.

2. The yanked zip 8.6.0

With the wasmtime fix in, the audit's only remaining finding is zip 8.6.0, yanked upstream. That one finding kept the required "Security audit" check red on every pull request, and so blocked this security fix from merging too.

It cannot be replaced from here:

  • calamine, whose latest release (0.36.1) requires zip ^8.6, pulls it in. Every zip from 8.0.0 through 9.0.2 is yanked; only 9.0.3 and later are live.
  • A direct bump leaves 8.6.0 in place for calamine and puts two zip versions in the build, which dpp-integrator avoids on purpose (its direct zip is version-matched to calamine's, for the XLSX bomb pre-scan).
  • Git sources are denied in deny.toml, so patching in a calamine fork is out. Dependabot's chore(deps): bump zip from 8.6.0 to 9.0.1 #465 targets 9.0.1, which is itself yanked. The upstream fix is chore(deps): upgrade zip to 9.0 tafia/calamine#741 (open).

cargo audit --deny yanked has no way to leave one crate alone: --ignore takes advisory IDs, and a yanked crate has none. So the audit is now scripts/check-yanked.sh, which keeps both --deny yanked and --deny unmaintained, fails on every vulnerability, and lets a yanked crate through only when .cargo/yanked-register.txt names that exact version:

  • an entry needs an owner, a reason and a release condition, and its expires can be at most 60 days after recorded;
  • an expired entry fails the audit, and so does one that no longer matches a yanked crate, so the exception ends on a date or when calamine moves, whichever comes first;
  • a second yanked crate, or zip at another version, fails.

The register holds zip 8.6.0 until 15 December. The nightly Advisories run uses the same script, so an expiry is noticed on a day nothing was committed. scripts/check-yanked.test.sh (20 cases, in CI and in just audit) drives the checker against saved audit output and proves each direction goes red.

Holding --deny yanked exactly as it was would leave this security fix, and every other pull request, unmergeable until calamine ships. So the exception is for one named crate with an expiry, not a global relaxation of the flag.

Checked

  • just check passes end to end, audit included, for the first time since the advisories were published
  • just lint-integration: green
  • scripts/check-yanked.sh against the live audit passes with the register, fails with an empty register ("zip 8.6.0 is yanked and is not in …") and fails with the date set past the expiry
  • cargo nextest run -p dpp-plugin-host --features wasm-fixture-tests: 64 of 64 pass, including sdk_generated_abi_round_trips_through_host, which compiles the ABI fixture to wasm32-wasip1 and runs it through the upgraded host
  • cargo nextest run -p dpp-plugin-host --features integration-tests: 71 of 71 pass
  • unit tests: 1492 of 1492 pass, 3 skipped

After this merges

The other open pull requests need their branches updated from main. #479 and the pull request stacked on it both change Cargo.lock as well, so they conflict with this one and will be rebased with main's lock file.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Updated Wasmtime and Wasmtime-WASI from 49.0.2 to 49.0.3, resolving advisories RUSTSEC-2026-0352 through RUSTSEC-2026-0364.
    • Audits now allow only specifically registered yanked crate versions with valid, time-limited exceptions; expired or mismatched exceptions cause the audit to fail.
  • Maintenance
    • Added automated checks to validate the yanked-crate exception rules in continuous integration and local audits.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a yanked-crate audit checker that permits registered crate versions under date and matching rules. Local and CI audit workflows run the checker and its self-test. The changelog records the audit policy and a Wasmtime patch update.

Changes: Yanked crate audit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect and classify audit findings
scripts/check-yanked.sh
The checker runs cargo audit or reads saved output. It parses findings and counts, and fails on vulnerabilities, unmaintained crates, unreadable findings, or inconsistent counts.
Validate yanked crate exceptions
scripts/check-yanked.sh, .cargo/yanked-register.txt, scripts/check-yanked.test.sh
The checker validates required fields, unique crate versions, dates, expiration limits, and matches between findings and register entries. The register documents the policy and lists zip 8.6.0. Tests cover allowed and rejected audit and register cases.
Run the checker in local and CI audits
justfile, .github/workflows/advisories.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml, CHANGELOG.md
The audit recipe and workflows run the checker and its self-test. The changelog describes the audit policy and records the Wasmtime patch update.

A future-dated register entry can keep a yanked dependency approved beyond the intended exception period. Reject future recording dates before merging, or accept this bounded audit-policy risk.

Reject future recorded dates.

If an entry sets recorded to 2099-01-01 and expires to 2099-02-01, both dates pass these checks today. The checker then accepts the yanked crate for decades, despite the intended 60-day limit. Reject recorded dates after TODAY, and add a future-date fixture to the self-test.
