This PR introduces a new way to account for delayed neutron precursors (DNPs) drift in liquid-fueled systems. With this implementation, DNPs are transported using streamline integration (Runge Kutta 4). The velocity field is currently provided in the OpenMC model, but the end goal is to obtain it from Cardinal. This new feature is only available with regular meshes for the moment and will be extended to cover unstructured meshes in following PRs.
Because this PR uses the concept of field introduced in PR #3734, it is based on the corresponding branch.
This is the first step toward integrating the functionalities developed for the dnp_drift library presented in [1] directly into OpenMC source code.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added spatial temperature fields on structured meshes, with temperatures applied as particles move through the mesh.
Added delayed-neutron precursor drift using mesh-based velocity fields, including configurable boundaries, RK4 integration, and optional outlet recycling.
Added Python and C APIs for configuring and accessing temperature and velocity fields.
Documentation
Expanded the user and API guides with field and precursor-drift setup details.
Tests
Added unit and regression coverage for temperature fields, precursor drift, and mesh behavior.
The pull request adds mesh-based temperature and velocity fields, extends structured-mesh traversal, and integrates temperature-field crossings into particle transport. It also adds delayed-neutron-precursor drift using RK4 streamline integration, with configurable boundary handling, optional recycling, and geometry reconciliation.
Changes: Mesh Fields, Temperature Fields, and DNP Drift
Mesh interfaces and regular-mesh implementations add traversal, connectivity, coordinate normalization, and physical-group face sampling. C++ and Python field types validate, evaluate, and serialize mesh-associated values.
Settings load temperature fields and expose their values through the C API. Particle transport tracks field crossings and applies field temperatures. Regression tests cover mesh, lattice, DAGMC, and boundary configurations.
DNP drift settings define the velocity field, boundary and physical-group maps, RK4 time step, and recycling parameters. The settings reader configures the field and integrator. RK4 advances positions along the velocity field.
Precursor transport and geometry reconciliation include/openmc/dnp_drift.h, src/dnp_drift.cpp, include/openmc/boundary_condition.h, src/boundary_condition.cpp, src/physics.cpp, tests/cpp_unit_tests/test_dnp_drift.cpp, tests/unit_tests/test_dnp_drift.py, tests/regression_tests/dnp_drift/*, docs/source/usersguide/dnp_drift.rst
Delayed fission sites are transported until decay or a mesh-boundary action, then reconciled with geometry. Boundary handling and tests cover inlet, outlet, wall, recycling, and geometry-boundary cases.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 644b8
The new DNP drift and field features have reachable failures: recycled precursors can abort a run on long decay times, inlet re-entry can fail or misplace sites, and re-initializing OpenMC in one process fails when fields are defined. These should be fixed before merge.

The "outside model" case is now testable, and the comment is stale.

Reducing integrator_dt can abort the run because of a hard-coded iteration cap.
This tip recommends a smaller time step. transport_dnp in src/dnp_drift.cpp calls fatal_error after DNP_DRIFT_TRANSPORT_MAX_ITER (1000) steps, so a smaller step makes that failure more likely. See the comment on src/dnp_drift.cpp. Update this tip after that fix.

Python accepts a boundary_map without "wall", but the C++ reader rejects it.
The DNPDrift docstring marks "wall" as optional, and the setter only requires inlet and outlet. The C++ settings reader (src/settings.cpp, dnp_drift block) calls fatal_error("Wall boundary conditions must be declared.") when the wall node is absent. A model without a wall group therefore passes Python validation and aborts in the C++ reader at startup. The user guide also says users "must specify" inlet, outlet and wall groups.
Align the two sides. Either make wall optional in the C++ reader, or require it here and update the docstring and the unit tests that build a boundary_map without wall.
Possible fix if `wall` stays required

RectilinearMesh.n_vertices reads a nonexistent attribute.
RectilinearMesh never defines _dimension. It derives dimension from x_grid, y_grid, and z_grid. As a result, n_vertices always raises AttributeError.
FieldBase.values and FieldBase.from_xml_element both read mesh.n_vertices for mapping="nodal". RectilinearMesh is in FieldBase._supported_meshes. A nodal TemperatureField or VelocityField on a RectilinearMesh therefore cannot be constructed or read from XML.
Use the public dimension property.

The C++ RectilinearMesh still inherits the failing StructuredMesh::n_vertices(), connectivity(), and normalize_coordinates(). A nodal rectilinear field will fail at TypedField construction in C++ even after this fix. Consider rejecting nodal mapping for RectilinearMesh in Python until the C++ side supports it.

A fixed cap of 1000 steps aborts the run for ordinary integrator_dt values.
transport_dnp calls fatal_error when n_iteration exceeds DNP_DRIFT_TRANSPORT_MAX_ITER (1000). The cap does not scale with decay_time or integrator_dt.
With integrator_dt=0.1 (the default and the documented example), 1000 steps cover only 100 s of precursor lifetime. Long-lived delayed groups have decay constants near 0.01 s⁻¹. Their sampled decay times exceed 100 s in a sizeable fraction of cases. With recycling=True, precursors circulate until they decay, so they hit the cap often. A smaller integrator_dt, as the user guide's tip suggests, lowers the covered time further. One such precursor aborts the whole simulation.
Scale the cap with the work required. For example, allow decay_time / dt steps plus a margin. Keep a bound for the external_travel_time == 0 case, which Python allows.

An inlet crossing can push t_n past decay_time and trigger fatal_error or a wrong site position.
For BCType::INLET, action is always Actions::REENTER. The REENTER case then runs t_n += settings::dnp_drift_external_travel_time without the decay_time > t_n + external_travel_time check that the OUTLET path uses.
If a precursor crosses an inlet face (reversed or recirculating flow) and t_n + external_travel_time > decay_time, the loop ends with t_n > decay_time. At that point y_n_minus_1 has been reset to Position(). The final _adjust_position(y_n, y_n_minus_1, ...) call then does one of two things:
It calls fatal_error("The excess time cannot be greater than the time step dt.").
It interpolates between the origin and y_n, which gives a wrong site position.
The user guide also says an inlet crossing only repositions the precursor and "continues its trajectory". It does not describe a time penalty.
Add the external travel time only for outlet crossings. If the penalty on inlet crossings is intended, apply the same survival check as for the outlet.

Update the Actions::REENTER handling so dnp_drift_external_travel_time is added
only when the crossed boundary is BCType::OUTLET; inlet crossings should
reposition the precursor and continue without a time penalty.

Guard the field C API functions against a missing field.
All six openmc_temperature_field_* and openmc_velocity_field_* functions dereference simulation::temperature_field or simulation::velocity_field without a null check. These pointers are nullptr when the model has no <temperature_field> or <dnp_drift>, and after openmc_finalize resets them. In those states, a call through openmc.lib dereferences a null pointer and crashes the host process instead of returning an error code.
Return an error when the field is absent. The *_size() functions return size_t, so they should return 0 in that case.

Add null checks to all six temperature and velocity field C API functions before
dereferencing their field pointers. Return OPENMC_E_UNASSIGNED with an

each *_size() function when its field is absent; preserve existing bounds checks

Reset field storage and DNP drift settings in openmc_finalize.
openmc_finalize clears the temperature and velocity field pointers, but it leaves model::fields and model::field_map populated. A second openmc_init in the same process then fails when the model defines a <field>. The DNP drift settings also persist. A later model without <dnp_drift> leaves dnp_drift_on set, while the velocity field and streamline integrator are null. The drift path then dereferences those null pointers.

Use set-backed membership for each destination list.
The proposed outer std::set removes duplicate field values, but it does not improve the mostly-distinct case. Each destination list still grows to the field length, and each linear contains() call still scans that list. The work remains quadratic.
At 10⁵ distinct values and 100 lists, this is roughly 5 × 10¹¹ comparisons before thermal-scattering lists are included. Track membership with a set for each destination list, seed it with existing temperatures, and append only newly inserted values.

Update the temperature-field loops in the code containing the `nuc_temps` and
`thermal_temps` lists to track membership with a set per destination list,
seeded from that list’s existing values. Append each field temperature only when
newly inserted into its set, replacing the repeated linear `contains()` checks.

Initialize selected_face_id and reject an empty face set.
selected_face_id is uninitialized when the selection loop does not run. This occurs when physical_groups is empty or resolves to no faces, for example when the XML contains <inlet></inlet>. In that case, total_area is 0 and sample_on_face(selected_face_id, seed) reads an indeterminate value. The result is undefined behavior or an arbitrary "Face ID out of bounds!" failure. Cppcheck reports the same uninitvar defect.
Fail with a clear message when face_ids is empty. Initialize the selection to the last face so that floating-point rounding cannot leave the loop without a selection.

Before the face-selection loop, reject an empty face_ids collection with a clear
error. Initialize selected_face_id to the last face ID before the weighted
selection loop so rounding cannot leave it unassigned; preserve the existing
sampling flow for nonempty face sets.

Release the previous VelocityField and clear the global pointer.
The cross wall fixture calls set_velocity_field twice. The first allocation is overwritten and leaked. The destructor also leaves a dangling pointer, so deleting only in set_velocity_field can cause a later fixture to double-delete it.
No inspected build or CI configuration establishes that LeakSanitizer or another leak checker runs these tests, but the allocation leak remains valid independently of that configuration.
