Adding multigroup photon transport capability in MC mode - #4141
This PR enables multigroup photon transport in the Monte Carlo solver. It builds on #4073, which generates photon MGXS libraries on the Python side (PhotonTransferMatrixXS, Library(particle_type='photon')) and writes a particle_type attribute to the library file. Until now the C++ side never read that attribute, and multigroup mode rejected photon transport outright.
This is the first of two PRs toward a multigroup photon random ray workflow; a follow-up will add random ray support on top of this one.
Changes
Photon support in multigroup mode
settings.cpp: lift the check that rejected photon transport in multigroup mode.
material.cpp: guard the continuous-energy photon data setup with settings::run_CE, so multigroup runs no longer look up photon element data in cross_sections.xml.
mgxs_interface.{h,cpp}: read the library's particle_type in read_header(), store it, and use it when setting up the multigroup globals in put_mgxs_header_data_to_globals(). For photon libraries the default inverse velocity is now 1/c in every group. It used to be computed from the neutron mass, so photons moved at neutron speeds, corrupting particle time, time filters and cutoffs, and the inverse-velocity score.
source.cpp: in multigroup mode, before converting source energies to groups, check that the source particle type matches the library and that the energy lies within the library's group bounds, and error out otherwise. Without the type check, a neutron source with a photon library runs silently on photon cross sections.
tally.cpp: reject pulse-height tallies in multigroup mode, since they rely on continuous-energy photon physics.
Group-wise multiplicity for photon libraries
Photon libraries from #4073 fold secondary photons (fluorescence, bremsstrahlung, annihilation) into the nu-scatter matrix and store no multiplicity matrix. Multigroup Monte Carlo decides survival with absorption/total and then multiplies the weight by the multiplicity, which defaults to 1, so photon production per collision came out low by the group's production-to-scattering ratio (Item 2 of the review of #4073). When a photon library has no multiplicity_matrix, OpenMC now derives the row-constant multiplicity when reading the library:
It errors out if a group produces photons but has no scattering to carry them. An explicit multiplicity matrix still takes precedence. This is the same ν(g) the review of #4073 proposed exporting from Python; deriving it at load time leaves the library format unchanged. If reviewers prefer the Python export, this becomes a fallback for libraries without one.
Analog nu-scatter applies the multiplicity (tally_scoring.cpp)
In multigroup mode, analog nu-scatter tallies (those with an EnergyoutFilter or LegendreFilter) scored the pre-collision weight but not the multiplicity of the sampled transfer, so they came out low by that multiplicity. They now include it, matching the weight change the collision applies.
Behavior changes for existing multigroup (neutron) runs
Analog nu-scatter tallies change for libraries whose multiplicity is not 1. No existing test covered this: mg_tallies uses a library without a multiplicity, and mgxs_library_ce_to_mg removes its tallies before the multigroup run.
A source energy below the lowest group edge is now an error. Before, it was mapped to the out-of-range group index G.
Existing libraries have no particle_type attribute and are read as neutron libraries, so neutron sources are unaffected by the type check.
Testing
tests/regression_tests/mg_photon: a 3-group photon library (P1 scattering, a top group that produces more photons than it scatters) in a reflective 10 cm cube, i.e. an infinite medium with an exact solution. Two tallies are checked against it within 5σ: a tracklength tally of group-wise reaction rates and inverse velocity (photons must travel at c), and an analog group-to-group tally of scatter and nu-scatter with P0 and P1 moments. The P1 check is needed because the scalar flux in an infinite medium does not depend on the scattering anisotropy.
The problem runs with an explicit multiplicity matrix and without one (derived ν(g)); both must reproduce the same reference results.
A survival-biasing run must reproduce the same exact solution.
Five input checks: source energy above and below the library bounds, particle-type mismatch, a pulse-height tally, and a group that produces photons without scattering.
tests/unit_tests/test_mg_analog_nu_scatter.py: neutron analog nu-scatter with a non-unity multiplicity, with and without survival biasing. It fails on develop, where nu-scatter comes out low by the top group's 1.4 multiplicity, and passes here.
Mutation checks: reverting the nu-scatter fix fails the analog transfer checks, removing the derived multiplicity fails the derived case, and flipping the sign of the sampled scattering cosine passes every tracklength check and is caught only by the P1 check. The previous version of mg_photon missed the first two.
Comparison with continuous-energy transport
This is a simple copper 6.13 MeV photon source in an infinite medium. The library comes from a continuous-energy run of the same problem with openmc.mgxs.Library(particle_type='photon') on a [N]-group structure, and the multigroup runs use it with the derived ν(g) and with an explicit multiplicity matrix. Since the cross sections are weighted with the continuous-energy flux of the same infinite medium, multigroup transport should reproduce its group fluxes exactly, which makes this a closure test of the library and the multigroup transport together.
Known limitations
Coupled neutron-photon multigroup transport is out of scope: a library describes a single particle type, and the source has to match it.
Angular treatment: Add photon multigroup cross section generation #4073 builds photon libraries without a transport correction, and Library.legendre_order is not passed on to PhotonTransferMatrixXS, which is not a ScatterMatrixXS, so photon libraries are P0 unless the order is set on each matrix. Compton scattering is strongly forward-peaked at MeV energies, so finite, deep-penetration problems can be expected to deviate from continuous energy until this is addressed.
A group whose library data has scattering (total > absorption) but an empty transfer row, typically a group barely sampled in the library run, has no outgoing distribution. Multigroup transport then keeps those photons in their group, overestimating its flux by up to Σt/Σa.

Move the simulation-based test to the regression suite.
model.run() executes a transport simulation in each parametrized case. The test then reads tally results from that run, so it requires simulation output. Each case uses 20 batches of 1,000 particles, which totals 40,000 histories across both cases. The repository guideline for tests/unit_tests/** says that tests requiring simulation output should use regression tests instead. Move this test to tests/regression_tests/ and keep the group-balance assertions.

Reject unrecognized particle_type values instead of falling back to neutron.
The Python API accepts only "neutron" and "photon", but the C++ reader accepts any present value without validation. An edited library with "Photon" or "gamma" is therefore treated as neutron data. A neutron source can pass source validation, and neutron inverse-velocity data can be used for the library.
Accept only "neutron" and "photon". Raise a fatal error for any other present value.

Description
This PR enables multigroup photon transport in the Monte Carlo solver. It builds on #4073, which generates photon MGXS libraries on the Python side (
PhotonTransferMatrixXS,Library(particle_type='photon')) and writes aparticle_typeattribute to the library file. Until now the C++ side never read that attribute, and multigroup mode rejected photon transport outright. This is the first of two PRs toward a multigroup photon random ray workflow; a follow-up will add random ray support on top of this one.
Changes
Photon support in multigroup mode
settings.cpp: lift the check that rejected photon transport in multigroup mode.material.cpp: guard the continuous-energy photon data setup withsettings::run_CE, so multigroup runs no longer look up photon element data incross_sections.xml.mgxs_interface.{h,cpp}: read the library'sparticle_typeinread_header(), store it, and use it when setting up the multigroup globals input_mgxs_header_data_to_globals(). For photon libraries the default inverse velocity is now 1/c in every group. It used to be computed from the neutron mass, so photons moved at neutron speeds, corrupting particle time, time filters and cutoffs, and theinverse-velocityscore.source.cpp: in multigroup mode, before converting source energies to groups, check that the source particle type matches the library and that the energy lies within the library's group bounds, and error out otherwise. Without the type check, a neutron source with a photon library runs silently on photon cross sections.tally.cpp: reject pulse-height tallies in multigroup mode, since they rely on continuous-energy photon physics.Group-wise multiplicity for photon libraries
When a photon library has no
multiplicity_matrix, OpenMC now derives the row-constant multiplicity when reading the library:It errors out if a group produces photons but has no scattering to carry them. An explicit multiplicity matrix still takes precedence. This is the same ν(g) the review of #4073 proposed exporting from Python; deriving it at load time leaves the library format unchanged. If reviewers prefer the Python export, this becomes a fallback for libraries without one.
Analog nu-scatter applies the multiplicity (
tally_scoring.cpp)In multigroup mode, analog nu-scatter tallies (those with an
EnergyoutFilterorLegendreFilter) scored the pre-collision weight but not the multiplicity of the sampled transfer, so they came out low by that multiplicity. They now include it, matching the weight change the collision applies.Behavior changes for existing multigroup (neutron) runs
mg_talliesuses a library without a multiplicity, andmgxs_library_ce_to_mgremoves its tallies before the multigroup run.particle_typeattribute and are read as neutron libraries, so neutron sources are unaffected by the type check.Testing
tests/regression_tests/mg_photon: a 3-group photon library (P1 scattering, a top group that produces more photons than it scatters) in a reflective 10 cm cube, i.e. an infinite medium with an exact solution. Two tallies are checked against it within 5σ: a tracklength tally of group-wise reaction rates and inverse velocity (photons must travel at c), and an analog group-to-group tally of scatter and nu-scatter with P0 and P1 moments. The P1 check is needed because the scalar flux in an infinite medium does not depend on the scattering anisotropy.tests/unit_tests/test_mg_analog_nu_scatter.py: neutron analog nu-scatter with a non-unity multiplicity, with and without survival biasing. It fails ondevelop, where nu-scatter comes out low by the top group's 1.4 multiplicity, and passes here.mg_photonmissed the first two.Comparison with continuous-energy transport
This is a simple copper 6.13 MeV photon source in an infinite medium. The library comes from a continuous-energy run of the same problem with
openmc.mgxs.Library(particle_type='photon')on a [N]-group structure, and the multigroup runs use it with the derived ν(g) and with an explicit multiplicity matrix. Since the cross sections are weighted with the continuous-energy flux of the same infinite medium, multigroup transport should reproduce its group fluxes exactly, which makes this a closure test of the library and the multigroup transport together.Known limitations
Library.legendre_orderis not passed on toPhotonTransferMatrixXS, which is not aScatterMatrixXS, so photon libraries are P0 unless the order is set on each matrix. Compton scattering is strongly forward-peaked at MeV energies, so finite, deep-penetration problems can be expected to deviate from continuous energy until this is addressed.Checklist
