You're not doing this for Annotations (which is a direct close), in case it's missing?

annotations is just cloned and placed directly in the COS annotations. There's nothing to mutate. With the labels, we need to add the template hash label.

[P2] Bound this diagnostic before writing status. ValidateLabels includes the rejected value in its error. A 40,000-character ASCII label value is accepted by the nested template schema, but produces a 40,109-byte condition message here. I reproduced this against envtest: Status().Update is rejected with status.conditions[1].message: Too long: may not be more than 32768 bytes, so the promised Progressing=False/InvalidSpecification condition is never persisted.
Please summarize oversized rejected values and cap the complete diagnostic, with a regression test that writes status through the API server.

Fixed in 5e5883a. Two changes:
setConditionnow caps every condition message at 1024 bytes (UTF-8-safe,...[truncated]marker) — well under the API server's 32768-bytemetav1.Condition.messagelimit — so a status write can never be rejected for an oversized message, for this condition or any future one.validateTemplateMetadatanow omits any rejected label/annotation value longer than 64 bytes, replacing it with<N bytes omitted>instead of echoing it, so the diagnostic stays readable (field path + reason + size).
Covered by unit tests: Test_validateTemplateMetadata asserts an oversized value is omitted rather than echoed, and Test_setCondition_capsMessage asserts the message cap.

Add a generic spec.template.metadata (labels + annotations) to the ClusterObjectDeployment template, mirroring orb-operator's ClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateMetadata, and propagate it verbatim onto every ClusterObjectSet revision the controller creates. This is the Kubernetes Deployment.spec.template.metadata -> Pod pattern. It lets a ClusterObjectDeployment carry arbitrary per-revision metadata (e.g. bundle annotations) down to its revisions without the controller knowing what the keys mean. buildClusterObjectSet clones the template metadata onto each revision and stamps the controller-managed template-hash label last so it always wins over a caller-supplied value. Because metadata is part of the hashed template (and omitzero), a metadata change cuts a new revision while a metadata-less deployment keeps the same hash (no re-rollout churn). Labels and annotations are each capped at 32 properties (MaxProperties) at the CRD, matching orb. Because the metadata is propagated verbatim onto each revision's ClusterObjectSet, the reconciler validates spec.template.metadata against the API server's own label/annotation rules (label key/value format, annotation key format, and the total annotation size limit); invalid metadata sets Progressing=False with reason InvalidSpecification and a user-facing message and skips revision creation, so the error is actionable on the ClusterObjectDeployment instead of silently stalling at ClusterObjectSet creation. Includes unit coverage (propagation, template-hash override, hash participation, no-churn, empty metadata, invalid-metadata InvalidSpecification including combined annotation size over the total limit), CRD validation tests, and experimental e2e scenarios for propagation and invalid metadata. Description
Adds a generic
spec.template.metadata(labels + annotations) to theClusterObjectDeploymenttemplate, mirroring orb-operator'sClusterObjectDeploymentTemplateMetadata, and propagates it verbatim onto everyClusterObjectSetrevision the controller creates. This is the Kubernetes
Deployment.spec.template.metadata→ Pod pattern. It lets aClusterObjectDeploymentcarry arbitrary per-revision metadata (e.g. bundle annotations) down to its revisions without the COD controller knowing what the keys mean — keeping that controller OLM-agnostic.Behavior
buildClusterObjectSetclonestemplate.metadatalabels/annotations onto each revision, stamping the controller-managedtemplate-hashlabel last so it always wins over a caller-supplied value.omitzero): a metadata change cuts a new revision, while a metadata-less deployment serializes identically and keeps the same hash (no re-rollout churn).Validation
Because the metadata is propagated verbatim onto each revision's
ClusterObjectSet, invalid labels/annotations would otherwise be rejected by the API server at revision creation and silently stall the rollout. The reconciler validatesspec.template.metadataagainst the API server's own rules (label key/value format, annotation key format and total size). On invalid metadata it setsProgressing=Falsewith reasonInvalidSpecificationand a user-facing message, and skips revision creation — so the error is actionable on theClusterObjectDeploymentitself.Testing
template-hashoverride, hash participation, no-churn (omitzero), empty-metadata, invalid-metadata →InvalidSpecification.template.metadataand assert the revision carries it; apply invalid metadata and assertProgressing=False/InvalidSpecification.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
