fix: expand %{RULE.*} in SecAction and SecRuleScript rules - #3734
RunTimeString::evaluate() (src/run_time_string.cc) casts the rule to RuleWithActions instead of RuleWithOperator before it resolves the variables in a macro. The FIXME about the cast is gone with it.
SetVar::evaluate() (src/actions/set_var.cc) passes its RuleWithActions *rule to Variable::evaluate() directly, instead of casting it to RuleWithOperator, in the =+/=- branch.
Msg::evaluate() and LogData::evaluate() (src/actions/msg.cc, log_data.cc) expand their string with the rule they get.
The dynamic collection elements (src/variables/tx.h, ip.h, global.h, resource.h, session.h, user.h) pass the rule to m_string->evaluate() when they expand their key, so that reading a key such as tx.score_%{RULE.id} uses the same name as writing it.
Add 8 cases to test/test-cases/regression/variable-RULE.json, which is already in test/test-suite.in:
setvar:tx.rule_id=%{RULE.id} in a SecAction;
setvar:tx.rule_msg=%{RULE.msg} in a SecAction with a msg;
setvar:tx.score=+%{RULE.id} in a SecAction, after another SecAction has set it to 5;
setvar:tx.score_%{RULE.id}=5,setvar:tx.score_%{RULE.id}=+1 in a SecAction and in a SecRule, expecting 6;
msg:'id %{RULE.id}' in a SecRule, and logdata:'id %{RULE.id}' in a SecAction.
The titles of the existing 7 cases change from (n/7) to (n/15).
why
SecAction is a RuleUnconditional and SecRuleScript is a RuleScript. Both derive from RuleWithActions, not from RuleWithOperator, so dynamic_cast<RuleWithOperator *> returned NULL, and the RULE variable had no rule to read from. %{RULE.id} and the other RULE fields expanded to an empty string in these rules, for example in setvar.
Variable::evaluate() takes a RuleWithActions * (src/variables/variable.h), so RuleWithActions is the right cast. The RULE variable only uses RuleWithActions members (m_ruleId, m_rev, severity(), logData(), msg(), and the chain parent).
The dynamic collection elements expanded their key without the rule, while SetVar::evaluate() expands the key it writes with the rule. An =+ or =- setvar on a key with a %{RULE.*} macro therefore read a different, usually missing, key, got 0, and overwrote the value with the increment alone. In SecRule rules this was already the case before this PR. In SecAction and SecRuleScript rules, both sides used to get an empty macro, so they matched by accident; the first commit alone would have broken them (found by Copilot).
Msg::evaluate() and LogData::evaluate() got the rule, but expanded their string with data(), which doesn't pass it on, so %{RULE.*} in msg and logdata was empty in every kind of rule, SecRule included (found by CodeRabbit). data() stays as it is: RuleWithActions::msg() and logData() use it to resolve %{RULE.msg} and %{RULE.logdata}, and passing the rule there would make a msg that contains %{RULE.msg} recurse.
The cast came in with a refactoring in v3.0.5 (59d4268, "Refactoring: renames Rule to RuleWithOperator").
The cast change alone doesn't affect SecRule rules, because a RuleWithOperator is also a RuleWithActions.
Behavior change:%{RULE.*} now expands to the rule's fields instead of an empty string in SecAction and SecRuleScript rules, in msg and logdata of every kind of rule, and when a dynamic collection key such as tx.score_%{RULE.id} is read. A configuration that relied on the empty string would see different values, but I don't think anyone relies on that. CRS isn't affected: CRS 4.8 uses no %{rule.*} macro in a SecAction, in msg or logdata, or in a setvar key.
Fixed access to RULE values in actions and scripts, including when saving rule IDs or messages to transaction variables.
Corrected rule-variable evaluation when updating transaction scores, resolving dynamic variable names, and interpolating values into messages and log data.
Tests
Added regression coverage for rule IDs and messages in actions and scripts, score updates, message and log interpolation, and dynamic variable names under different request conditions.
RunTimeString::evaluate() cast the rule to RuleWithOperator before
resolving the variables in a macro. SecAction (RuleUnconditional) and
SecRuleScript (RuleScript) derive from RuleWithActions, not from
RuleWithOperator, so the cast returned NULL, and %{RULE.id} and the
other RULE fields expanded to an empty string in their actions.
Cast to RuleWithActions, which is what Variable::evaluate() takes. In
SetVar::evaluate(), the rule already is a RuleWithActions, so pass it
on without a cast.
Add regression cases for %{RULE.id} and %{RULE.msg} in a SecAction,
%{RULE.id} in a SecRuleScript rule, and an =+ setvar with %{RULE.id}
in a SecAction.
Fixesowasp-modsecurity#3733
Evaluation paths now pass RuleWithActions context to variable and runtime-string evaluation. Dynamic variable keys, messages, log data, and expiry expressions receive the current rule. Regression cases cover RULE values in assignments, Lua access, score updates, dynamic names, messages, log data, and IP collection expiry.
Changes: RULE variable evaluation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pass rule context through evaluation src/actions/set_var.cc, src/run_time_string.cc
Both evaluation paths pass RuleWithActions context instead of casting the rule to RuleWithOperator.
Pass rule context to action string expansion src/actions/msg.cc, src/actions/log_data.cc, src/actions/expire_var.cc
Message, log-data, and expiry-expression evaluation pass the current rule to runtime-string evaluation.
Nine cases cover RULE.id and RULE.msg assignments, Lua access, score updates, dynamic names, message and log-data interpolation, and IP collection expiry. The seven existing test titles are renumbered to sixteen.
The change improves rule-macro expansion, though several existing action paths still omit the rule context. No new merge-blocking risk is established.

Explanation
Issue [#3733] requires %{RULE.*} to resolve from RuleWithActions in SecAction and SecRuleScript. RunTimeString, SetVar, Msg, LogData, ExpireVar, and the dynamic collection elements now pass the rule context. The regression file adds cases for SecAction, SecRuleScript, increments, dynamic keys, msg, and logdata. The cases expect rule-specific values such as 108, 110, 6, and id 115.

Explanation
The source changes remain connected to [#3733]. ExpireVar uses the same runtime-string rule context and the added test covers a dynamic key with expirevar. The remaining changes add regression coverage and update case numbering. No unrelated change is shown.

The dynamic collection elements (TX, IP, GLOBAL, RESOURCE, SESSION,
USER) expanded their key with m_string->evaluate(t), without the rule,
so a %{RULE.*} macro in the key expanded to an empty string when the
variable was read. SetVar::evaluate() expands the key with the rule
when it writes, so an =+ or =- setvar on a key such as
tx.score_%{RULE.id} read tx.score_, got 0, and overwrote
tx.score_<id> with the increment alone. This happened in SecRule rules
before the previous commit, and in SecAction and SecRuleScript rules
after it.
Pass the rule to m_string->evaluate() in all six.
Add regression cases for an =+ setvar on a tx.score_%{RULE.id} key in
a SecAction and in a SecRule.

Msg::evaluate() and LogData::evaluate() get the rule, but expanded
their string with data(), which doesn't pass it on, so %{RULE.id} and
the other RULE fields expanded to an empty string in msg and logdata,
in every kind of rule. Expand the string with the rule instead.
data() stays as it is. RuleWithActions::msg() and logData() use it to
resolve %{RULE.msg} and %{RULE.logdata}, and passing the rule there
too would make a msg that contains %{RULE.msg} recurse.
Add regression cases for %{RULE.id} in the msg of a SecRule and in the
logdata of a SecAction.

Thanks @airween. The cast change is right: Variable::evaluate() takes a RuleWithActions *, and RuleUnconditional and RuleScript both derive from it. Making the dynamic collection elements expand their key with the rule closes the read/write mismatch Copilot found. I built the PR head (macOS, PCRE2, Lua 5.5.1), and all 15 cases in variable-RULE.json pass.
One more place has the same mismatch, and this PR makes it reachable in SecAction rules:
expirevar still expands its key without the rule.ExpireVar::evaluate() (src/actions/expire_var.cc:37) calls m_string->evaluate(t). setvar now writes %{RULE.id} keys with the rule in a SecAction, so the two actions no longer use the same name:
[8] Saving variable: IP:score_200 with value: 5
[9] Setting variable `score_' to expire in 60 seconds.
So score_200 never expires, and an empty score_ entry with an expiry is created. Before this PR, both sides got an empty macro in a SecAction, so they matched. In a SecRule the mismatch already existed. The fix is the same one-liner as in the dynamic elements, m_string->evaluate(t, rule), and a case like the one above could check Setting variable \score_200' to expire`.
Not blocking, for a follow-up if you prefer: Tag::getName() (src/actions/tag.cc:55) also expands without the rule, so tag:'rule-%{RULE.id}' is still empty in every kind of rule, like msg and logdata were. The same goes for initcol, setsid/setuid/setrsc, setenv, redirect and operator parameters, but those are unlikely to use %{RULE.*}.
Everything else looks good to me, including keeping data() unchanged for RuleWithActions::msg() and logData().
ExpireVar::evaluate() expanded its expression with m_string->evaluate(t),
without the rule, while setvar expands with the rule. So in
SecAction "id:200,...,setvar:ip.score_%{RULE.id}=5,expirevar:ip.score_%{RULE.id}=60"
setvar wrote IP:score_200, but expirevar set the expiry on an empty
'score_' entry, and score_200 never expired. In a SecRule the mismatch
already existed; expanding %{RULE.*} in SecAction rules made it reachable
there too.
Add case 16 to variable-RULE.json for the example above.
expirevar now expands its expression with the rule too, see 6d30599. I added your example as case 16 to variable-RULE.json: it checks Setting variable `score_200' to expire in 60 seconds, and it fails without the fix.
I'd keep tag and the other actions for a follow-up, so this PR stays about the rules that couldn't expand %{RULE.*} at all. I'll open an issue for them.

Outside diff range comments (SetEnv, InitCol, SetSID, SetRsc, SetUID, Tag, Redirect): all seven are valid, but they're out of the scope of this PR, which covers setvar, expirevar, msg, logdata and the dynamic collection keys. They're tracked in #NNNN, together with the operator parameters, which need the rule passed through Operator::evaluate().
Nitpick (a SecRule dynamic-key read): this can't be written as a test, because a SecRule target can't contain a macro. After TX: the scanner switches to EXPECTING_VAR_PARAMETER (BEGINX_() in src/parser/seclang-scanner.ll), where the key is a DICT_ELEMENT, which doesn't allow }. SecRule TX:score_%{RULE.id} ... fails to load with "Expecting a variable". Only setvar switches to EXPECTING_VAR_PARAMETER_OR_MACRO_*, so the dynamic elements are read only by an =+/=-setvar, and cases 12 and 13 cover that read in a SecAction and in a SecRule.

@airween Thanks for the clarification.
The seven action findings remain valid follow-up work. They do not need changes in this PR. Your earlier comment identifies the follow-up as #3742.
I withdraw the SecRule dynamic-key target test suggestion. The scanner confirms that this context uses EXPECTING_VAR_PARAMETER, not a macro-enabled state. More precisely, it uses DICT_ELEMENT_WITH_EQUALS, which also excludes }.
Cases 12 and 13 already cover dynamic-key reads through setvar ...=+1 in SecAction and SecRule. Both expect the stored value to increase from 5 to 6.
No additional test is needed for that suggestion. I inspected the source and test definitions; I did not execute the tests.

RunTimeString::evaluate()(src/run_time_string.cc) casts the rule toRuleWithActionsinstead ofRuleWithOperatorbefore it resolves the variables in a macro. TheFIXMEabout the cast is gone with it.SetVar::evaluate()(src/actions/set_var.cc) passes itsRuleWithActions *ruletoVariable::evaluate()directly, instead of casting it toRuleWithOperator, in the=+/=-branch.Msg::evaluate()andLogData::evaluate()(src/actions/msg.cc,log_data.cc) expand their string with the rule they get.The dynamic collection elements (
src/variables/tx.h,ip.h,global.h,resource.h,session.h,user.h) pass the rule tom_string->evaluate()when they expand their key, so that reading a key such astx.score_%{RULE.id}uses the same name as writing it.Add 8 cases to
test/test-cases/regression/variable-RULE.json, which is already intest/test-suite.in:setvar:tx.rule_id=%{RULE.id}in a SecAction;setvar:tx.rule_msg=%{RULE.msg}in a SecAction with amsg;setvar:tx.rule_id=%{RULE.id}in a SecRuleScript rule; the script (lua-getvar-tx-rule-id.lua, added in fix: don't abort on an unknown variable name in Lua m.getvar()/m.getv() #3730) logs the value it reads, which also shows that thesetvarruns before the script;setvar:tx.score=+%{RULE.id}in a SecAction, after another SecAction has set it to 5;setvar:tx.score_%{RULE.id}=5,setvar:tx.score_%{RULE.id}=+1in a SecAction and in a SecRule, expecting6;msg:'id %{RULE.id}'in a SecRule, andlogdata:'id %{RULE.id}'in a SecAction.The titles of the existing 7 cases change from
(n/7)to(n/15).why
RuleUnconditionaland SecRuleScript is aRuleScript. Both derive fromRuleWithActions, not fromRuleWithOperator, sodynamic_cast<RuleWithOperator *>returnedNULL, and theRULEvariable had no rule to read from.%{RULE.id}and the otherRULEfields expanded to an empty string in these rules, for example insetvar.Variable::evaluate()takes aRuleWithActions *(src/variables/variable.h), soRuleWithActionsis the right cast. TheRULEvariable only usesRuleWithActionsmembers (m_ruleId,m_rev,severity(),logData(),msg(), and the chain parent).SetVar::evaluate()expands the key it writes with the rule. An=+or=-setvar on a key with a%{RULE.*}macro therefore read a different, usually missing, key, got0, and overwrote the value with the increment alone. In SecRule rules this was already the case before this PR. In SecAction and SecRuleScript rules, both sides used to get an empty macro, so they matched by accident; the first commit alone would have broken them (found by Copilot).Msg::evaluate()andLogData::evaluate()got the rule, but expanded their string withdata(), which doesn't pass it on, so%{RULE.*}inmsgandlogdatawas empty in every kind of rule, SecRule included (found by CodeRabbit).data()stays as it is:RuleWithActions::msg()andlogData()use it to resolve%{RULE.msg}and%{RULE.logdata}, and passing the rule there would make a msg that contains%{RULE.msg}recurse.RuleWithOperatoris also aRuleWithActions.%{RULE.*}now expands to the rule's fields instead of an empty string in SecAction and SecRuleScript rules, inmsgandlogdataof every kind of rule, and when a dynamic collection key such astx.score_%{RULE.id}is read. A configuration that relied on the empty string would see different values, but I don't think anyone relies on that. CRS isn't affected: CRS 4.8 uses no%{rule.*}macro in a SecAction, inmsgorlogdata, or in asetvarkey.references
