What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #6338

Add franz-go as an opt-in Kafka sink client on release-8.5, together with the authentication, monitoring, timeout and dependency changes required by this backport. Sarama remains the default; select franz-go with kafka-client=franz.

What is changed and how it works?

Bump the TiDB dependency to the latest 83cf9e865a81de6654b758a12efbd981fe0ec87d, which has the commit pingcap/tidb#72048, so that it can be compiled by the go 1.26

This combined backport includes the following master changes, adapted to the release branch:

Source PR Content
#5952 Move SASL configuration and SCRAM ownership into the Kafka package while preserving URI and TOML settings.
#6012 Add Sarama broker throttle-time metrics, cleanup and Grafana panels.
#4167 Add franz-go producers, admin operations, shared-client lifecycle, TLS/SASL, record-batch byte accounting and Kafka integration tools.
#6358 Normalize franz-go read/write timeouts to 10 seconds–15 minutes and update producer metrics, dashboards and topic diagnostics.
#6514 Upgrade Sarama to v1.61.1 for retry-ordering fixes.
#6541 Apply the Go 1.26.9, franz-go 1.22.2, x/net and related dependency/build updates.

Release-specific adaptations preserve write lease checks, sink close/cancellation behavior and OAuth credential redaction. Admin and sync producer calls pass contexts through the existing release interfaces. Redo cancellation handling uses the release branch's memory writer layout. The kafka_dump tool was introduced on master by #6143, gained Avro decoding in #6263 and migrated from Sarama to franz-go in #6311. #4167 adds broker/topic readiness checks. The release baseline has no kafka_dump directory, so this backport includes the existing source files needed by that tool.

The #6541 backport includes its dependency and build updates. Its unrelated routing-test changes are outside this combined backport. The timeout changes also overlap the open release PR #6412, and the Sarama upgrade overlaps the open release PR #6517.

Check List

Tests

  • Static review: checked source/target commit ancestry, effective release behavior, API callers, authentication, message/batch limits, write fencing, lifecycle and module changes.
  • Formatting: make fmt scoped to changed Go files in an isolated tracked checkout; git diff --check.
  • Earlier static checks: go mod tidy -diff for all four modules, dashboard structure and generated admin/factory mock consistency.
  • CI on 034536215: Check, Build Classic CDC and Check Next Gen Grafana passed.
  • Final CI validation after restoring the Avro decoder and OAuth redaction. Unit and integration tests were not run locally, as requested.

Classic Unit Tests on 034536215 failed during package initialization because the pinned TiDB dependency only supports the Go 1.25 map ABI. Integration checks and error log review also report failures; their causes remain to be confirmed. The successful E2E Test Group job only selected the integration groups.

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?

Sarama remains the default. Existing Kafka configuration keys and the release branch's case-sensitivity, write fencing and split size limits are preserved. Franz read/write timeouts use the range described above. No performance benchmarks were run.

This dependency set requires Go 1.26.9. Runtime validation and merge remain blocked on the release TiDB dependency gaining the Go 1.26 ABI implementation from pingcap/tidb#66254; the pinned dependency and ABI guard are retained.

Known inherited limitation: the batches/request recording method from #6358 has no dispatch point in franz-go 1.22.2, so that metric remains unsampled as in the source implementation.

Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

Build documentation and Grafana dashboards are updated.

Release note

Support franz-go as an opt-in Kafka sink client through the kafka-client sink URI parameter, and add Kafka broker throttle-time monitoring.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds franz-go as a selectable Kafka client alongside Sarama, updates Kafka sink interfaces and lifecycle handling, and adds Kafka producer metrics. It also changes codec size accounting for Franz, updates Kafka utilities, and moves repository toolchain declarations and build images to Go 1.26.9.

Changes: Kafka Sink

Layer / File(s) Summary
Kafka contracts and configuration
pkg/sink/kafka/*, pkg/security/sasl.go, pkg/security/sasl_test.go
Adds Kafka client selection, context-aware admin and producer APIs, and package-local SASL configuration. The Sarama implementation and its tests use the updated interfaces and configuration.
Franz admin, producers, and authentication
pkg/sink/kafka/franz_*.go, pkg/sink/kafka/oauth2.go, pkg/sink/kafka/*_test.go
Adds franz-go admin operations, synchronous and asynchronous producers, client configuration, SASL mechanisms, OAuth support, logging, and factory lifecycle handling.
Sink wiring and context propagation
downstreamadapter/sink/kafka/*, downstreamadapter/sink/topicmanager/*, tests/integration_tests/changefeed_update_config/credentials.sh
The sink selects and closes its Kafka factory, passes contexts to Kafka operations, and updates topic-manager and integration tests for the new interfaces.
Kafka record-batch sizing
pkg/sink/codec/*
Adds optional Kafka record-batch byte accounting and uses it in codec size checks. The Kafka sink enables this mode for Franz.
Producer metrics and dashboards
pkg/sink/kafka/*metrics*.go, metrics/*grafana/*.json
Adds producer and broker throttle metrics, exports throttle averages and p99 values, and adds Kafka Sink V2 dashboard panels.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 9faea

The event package’s tests cannot compile while the duplicate benchmark file remains, so this PR is not ready to merge. The keyspace-aware Kafka panels also need their queries aligned with the emitted metrics.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9faea

The new backend is opt-in, and the inspected paths preserve authentication settings, write-lease checks, per-changefeed client ownership, and delivery-error propagation. No introduced security-boundary bypass was established. Production permissions, rollout behavior, and complete dependency logging behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Franz activation affects selected changefeeds, and client objects are not shared across changefeeds. Effective broker, topic, and administration reach still follows configured credentials and external Kafka permissions; per-changefeed client ownership does not itself constrain those permissions. Production ACL and network scope were not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — URI and TOML configuration pass through shared Kafka option validation before backend construction. Franz maps broker, TLS, SASL, and OAuth settings into its client options rather than creating an unauthenticated alternate path. OAuth error handling redacts credential-bearing responses.
  • observed — Failure diagnostics can serialize row metadata and DDL text into application logs. The base Sarama path already logged this event context, and Franz reuses the formatter. The inspected comparison therefore does not establish an introduced or worsened data-disclosure condition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected transition preserves write fencing, terminal delivery-error propagation, and successful-delivery-only callbacks. Franz retains configured acknowledgement modes and permits retry duplicates, matching the existing at-least-once expectation rather than introducing an exactly-once guarantee.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — As defense in depth for both backends, consider bounded and redacted event diagnostics so primary-key metadata or DDL literals need not inherit application-log access and retention policies. This addresses inherited behavior, not an established PR regression.

Remove the backport work-tracking file from the release branch.

This file is a private task list for PR #6411. It records agent instructions ("按用户要求,不在本地运行测试"), open CI work, and the TiDB ABI blocker. It is not product documentation. After merge, it stays in the release-8.5 root and goes stale as soon as these tasks close. Move this content to the PR description or to tracking issues. Then delete the file.

Item 3 says that the pinned TiDB dependency still limits Go to 1.25. This PR moves the toolchain to Go 1.26.9. Resolve that blocker, or track it in an issue, before merge. Do you want me to draft the tracking issues?

Resolve the TiDB ABI incompatibility before requiring Go 1.26.9.

The supplied validation notes report that Classic Unit Tests abort during package initialization at the pinned TiDB Go 1.25 map-ABI guard. The unit-test job therefore fails before running tests. Update the pinned TiDB dependency to a Go 1.26-compatible revision, or otherwise resolve its guard, before requiring this toolchain.

The PR validation notes report this failure.

Remove urlstrictcolons=0 from the global godebug block.

Go keeps the legacy colon handling for non-HTTP schemes, including kafka, and consults urlstrictcolons only for http and https. This setting does not provide Kafka compatibility. It weakens HTTP(S) host validation for every net/url parse in the process.

Remove the redundant global override
// Keep the Go 1.25 default behaviors that Go 1.26 changed:
-// - urlstrictcolons=0: the sink URI may carry several Kafka broker endpoints

// - tlssecpmlkem=0: skip the new hybrid post-quantum TLS key exchanges that
// old Kafka/PD/S3 endpoints may not support.

🟡 Minor · Count simple Avro DML records in tableOf. · main.go:163-184

tests/utils/kafka_dump/main.go:163-184
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Count simple Avro DML records in tableOf.

When -schema-registry-uri decodes a simple Avro DML record, its table is nested inside the namespaced com.pingcap.simple.avro.Message envelope. tableOf checks only a root table or Debezium’s payload.op and payload.source.table, so it prints the record but does not count it. The utility can then time out while waiting for -until-count. Handle the simple Avro DML envelope and retain the Debezium row-operation check. Add a test for the decoded simple Avro shape.

Update tableOf to recognize DML records nested in the
com.pingcap.simple.avro.Message envelope and return the table from its
namespaced DML payload. Preserve the existing root-table and Debezium
row-operation checks, and add a test using the decoded simple Avro DML shape.
