What problem does this PR solve?

Issue Number: close #6566

What is changed and how it works?

  • Add the temporary [debug] enable-kafka-franz-go server option, disabled by default. Explicit kafka-client URI settings take precedence.
  • Add a shared integration-test cdc_server.toml that enables franz-go. The launcher uses this file by default, and an explicit --config selects the case-specific file.
  • Enable franz-go explicitly in the existing Kafka authentication case configs.
  • Cover configuration decoding and cloning and client selection precedence with unit tests.
  • Remove the mistakenly committed root server.toml.

Check List

Tests

  • Unit test:
    • make unit_test_pkg PKG='./pkg/config ./pkg/sink/kafka' P=2 — 407 tests passed with race detection.
  • Manual test:
    • make cdc — passed.
    • Eight startup configuration smoke checks with a stub CDC binary and TOML decoding — passed, covering the shared default file, explicit configs, redaction, legacy safepoint settings, and both authentication case configs.
    • bash -n tests/integration_tests/_utils/run_cdc_server tests/integration_tests/cli_with_auth/run.sh tests/integration_tests/cli_tls_with_auth/run.sh — passed.
    • tools/bin/shfmt -d tests/integration_tests/_utils/run_cdc_server tests/integration_tests/cli_with_auth/run.sh tests/integration_tests/cli_tls_with_auth/run.sh — passed.
    • git diff --check — passed.

Kafka integration tests were not run locally because required cluster binaries were unavailable.

Questions

Will it cause performance regression or break compatibility?

Client selection happens when sink options are constructed. The server default remains Sarama, and explicit URI selections retain their behavior. Kafka integration tests opt in to franz-go through their server configuration.

Do you need to update user documentation, design documentation or monitoring documentation?

No. This is a temporary debug option for the franz-go migration.

Release note

None

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a server setting to select franz-go as the default Kafka client.
    • Explicit Kafka client choices continue to take precedence over the server setting.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Integration tests now use their bundled server configuration by default.
    • Kafka/Glue schema registry tests now report Kafka unavailability with the appropriate error response.

Add a temporary server default while preserving explicit URI selections.
Enable franz-go in integration test startup configuration and cover config
merging with regression tests. Remove the mistakenly committed root
server.toml.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a server-level setting for the default Kafka sink client. Franz-Go becomes the default when enabled, while URI parameters retain precedence. Integration configurations enable the setting, and HTTP API assertions now check exact status and error codes.

Changes: Kafka client default

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and select the Kafka client
pkg/config/debug.go, pkg/config/server_config_test.go, pkg/sink/kafka/options.go, pkg/sink/kafka/options_test.go
DebugConfig adds EnableKafkaFranzGo. NewOptions selects Franz-Go when the setting is enabled and otherwise selects Sarama. URI client selections retain precedence. Tests cover decoding and client selection.
Enable Franz-Go in integration tests
tests/integration_tests/_utils/cdc_server.toml, tests/integration_tests/_utils/run_cdc_server, tests/integration_tests/cli_*_with_auth/run.sh, tests/integration_tests/http_api/util/test_case.py, server.toml
Integration configurations enable Franz-Go, and the server script uses the bundled configuration by default. The HTTP API test checks exact architecture-dependent status and error codes. The legacy server.toml file is deleted.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 28469

The reviewed changes leave explicit integration configurations usable without introducing the previously reported startup failure.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 28469

The switch is opt-in, preserves explicit client selections, and uses existing authentication and TLS configuration. No introduced security weakness was established. Risk remains low because one setting can affect multiple changefeeds, and live Kafka rollout behavior was not validated in this review.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — On an enabled server using this Kafka sink path, the switch can affect every newly constructed Kafka changefeed lacking an explicit client selection, rather than a single tenant or topic. The selected clients still use each sink's configured broker endpoints and credentials.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The routed create_changefeed declaration is an integration-test helper, not a server request handler. Its changed executable lines tighten expected HTTP status and JSON error-code assertions; they do not add an attacker-reachable production entrypoint. The two related TLS helpers were supplied only as unresolved name matches.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Franz consumes the resolved per-sink TLS and SASL settings. Certificate verification bypass remains false by default and requires an explicit option. Both client implementations use the configured credential conversion path, and Franz constructs separate SASL state for its temporary admin and producer clients.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The newly default-selectable Franz path closes its temporary admin before proceeding, releases metrics if client construction fails, and makes factory closure idempotent. Sink component initialization also defers cleanup on errors, limiting partially initialized client and authentication-resource lifetimes.

Explanation

The description follows the required template. It includes the issue reference, change summary, test results, compatibility assessment, documentation assessment, and release note. It also clearly states that Kafka integration tests were not run locally and why.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #6566 requires a temporary server-level franz-go default for integration CI and preservation of explicit kafka-client selections. DebugConfig.EnableKafkaFranzGo adds the TOML setting. NewOptions selects Sarama by default and Franz when the server setting is enabled. Existing URI selection remains authoritative, and tests cover URI overrides, decoding, cloning, and client selection. The shared integration configuration enables franz-go by default, and both authentication configurations enable it explicitly.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The root server.toml deletion is not required by issue #6566. The file only contained newarch=true, and the diff provides no connection between its removal and the franz-go server default or integration CI. The integration test expectation update supports the changed Kafka client behavior.

Resolution

Remove the root server.toml deletion from this pull request, or link an issue that requires this cleanup.

Select a shared default config in the integration-test launcher and let
explicit test configs override it. Enable franz-go in Kafka authentication
case configs and remove the generic config injection and its script test.
