Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved session and conversation loading so updates and errors are handled consistently, including when data is provided initially.
  • Documentation
    • Updated installation guidance to require Node.js 24 LTS or later for build tools.
    • Clarified that the packages run in the browser.
  • Development
    • Updated repository setup guidance to specify Node.js 24.15 or later and pnpm 9.
    • Updated automated checks to run on Node.js 24 and 26.

The session provider wrote a ref during render and, like the
conversation list, set state from a load started in an effect; the
React hooks lint rules flag both. Loads started in an effect now set
state only when they settle, and only while the component is mounted.
Also drop an assignment speech never reads.

TypeScript 7 does not provide the compiler API tsup's declaration build
uses, so pin 6.0, which typescript-eslint also supports; declare the
one process.env read in host and telemetry, since TypeScript 6 no longer
loads every installed @types package. ESLint 10 reads only flat
configuration: replace .eslintrc.cjs with eslint.config.mjs, and the
unmaintained eslint-plugin-react with @eslint-react/eslint-plugin.

Node 20 has reached end of life, and vitest 5, jsdom 30, changesets 3
and postcss-cli 12 need Node 22 or later. CI tests on 24 and 26, the
current LTS lines, and lints and releases on 26.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The pull request replaces the ESLint configuration and updates runtime and package requirements. It changes session and conversation loading state handling and removes a flag reset from speech pause planning.

Changes: Tooling and runtime baseline

Layer / File(s) Summary
ESLint flat configuration
.eslintrc.cjs, eslint.config.mjs, package.json
The repository removes the legacy ESLint configuration, adds a flat configuration for JavaScript, TypeScript, React, and Hooks, and updates root lint dependencies.
Runtime and package version alignment
.github/workflows/*, .github/dependabot.yml, README.md, docs/getting-started/installation.md, package.json, packages/*/package.json, packages/host/src/env.d.ts, packages/telemetry/src/env.d.ts
The Node.js engine requirement and workflow versions change. Package TypeScript requirements change to ^6.0.3. Environment declarations specify process.env.NODE_ENV. Documentation updates the prerequisites, and Dependabot groups minor and patch updates.

Session loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session state and initial loading
packages/auth/src/session/SessionProvider.tsx
Session and error updates use shared callbacks. Initial session loading ignores results after its effect has been cleaned up.

Conversation loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Conversation fetch and initialization
packages/chat/src/hooks/useConversations.ts, packages/chat/src/__tests__/useConversations.test.tsx
The hook tracks load outcomes by API base, prevents stale loads from updating state, and manages loading and errors for refreshes and base changes. Tests cover stale responses and base changes.

Speech pause planning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pause-step flag handling
packages/speech/src/synthesis.ts
The planner no longer resets first after adding a positive-duration pause step.

A refresh still in flight when the API base changed could overwrite the
new base's list, and a load for a new base kept the previous error and
did not show loading. Each load now takes a number and only the latest
writes its result, and loading and error follow the base the stored
result belongs to.

Ignore refresh results from a previous client.

If client changes while a focus or interval refresh() awaits bff.getSession(), the old request still calls apply() or fail(). The live guard covers only the initial load. A late result from the old client can overwrite the new client's session or error state. It can also call onUnauthorized for a session that no longer applies.

Track a generation for the current client, and drop results from earlier generations:

Suggested fix

   const onUnauthorizedRef = useRef(onUnauthorized);
+  const bffGeneration = useRef(0);
   // A layout effect, so a session read that settles right after a render
   // calls the callback that render committed.

   });

isLoading stays true for a superseded refresh.

refreshing counts calls to refresh(). It does not track which request is the latest. Take this sequence:

  1. refresh() starts for base A.
  2. apiBaseUrl changes to B.
  3. The load for B settles.

The load for B is now the latest, but refreshing > 0 keeps isLoading true until the superseded request for A settles. If that request is slow or hangs, the list shows a loading state next to valid data for B. The new test hides this because it awaits refreshing before it asserts isLoading.

Track the id of the latest request instead of a counter. Clear it only when that request settles. This also removes the try/finally in refresh.

Proposed fix

-  const [refreshing, setRefreshing] = React.useState(0);
+  const [pendingId, setPendingId] = React.useState<number | null>(null);
   const isCurrent = outcome.base === config.apiBaseUrl;
-  const isLoading = refreshing > 0 || !isCurrent;
+  const isLoading = pendingId !== null || !isCurrent;

Apply these changes outside the selected range:

   const load = React.useCallback(
     (base: string) => {
       const id = ++latest.current;
+      setPendingId(id);
       return fetchConversations().then(
         (list) => {
           if (id !== latest.current) return;
           setConversations(list);
           setOutcome({ base, error: null });
+          setPendingId(null);
         },
         (err: unknown) => {
           if (id !== latest.current) return;
           setOutcome({ base, error: err instanceof Error ? err : new Error('Unknown error') });
+          setPendingId(null);
         }
       );
     },
     [fetchConversations]
   );

   const refresh = React.useCallback(async () => {
-    setRefreshing((n) => n + 1);
     setOutcome((o) => ({ ...o, error: null }));
-    try {
-      await load(config.apiBaseUrl);
-    } finally {
-      setRefreshing((n) => n - 1);
-    }
+    await load(config.apiBaseUrl);
   }, [load, config.apiBaseUrl]);

Add a test that asserts isLoading is false after the new base settles while the old refresh is still pending.

The first-run skip fails under React StrictMode.

skipFirst is a ref. In development, StrictMode runs effects as mount, cleanup, mount. It keeps refs between those runs. The first run clears skipFirst.current. The simulated second run then calls load(). When initialConversations is non-empty, development replaces the provided list with a fetch result, but production does not. This makes development and production behave differently.

Compare against the seeded base instead of using a one-shot flag.
