Summary

Topology refresh currently removes absent hosts directly from metadata, leaving pools, policies, listeners, and reconnection state active. This also affects node replacement through SNI and ClientRoutes endpoints, whose identity changes with the host UUID.

Route every topology-discovered removal through exact-object retirement and complete lifecycle cleanup. An internal coordinator publishes topology changes in short transactions and delivers lifecycle notifications through an ordered queue outside topology and host callback locks. Removal notifications precede replacement addition, and stale pool creation and queued work cannot affect a replacement lifecycle.

The coordinator owns UP/DOWN admission, addition readiness, retirement, queued location changes, and shutdown. DOWN enters the queue before executor handoff; pool-creation failures retain an ownership reservation while invoking policies without session or host locks. Overlapping refreshes discard older snapshots while retaining forced token-rebuild intent and the identity of a still-valid candidate control connection.

Fixes: #1007.
Refs: #921.

Behavior and compatibility

  • refresh_nodes() synchronously publishes node-list and token metadata. Notifications, pool readiness, and DC/rack policy transitions can finish later when another callback is active.
  • A listener may refresh synchronously. Nested refresh appends notifications instead of delivering them recursively. An active callback can finish after retirement; subsequent stale work is discarded.
  • One FIFO orders notifications across hosts. A slow callback delays later notifications, but does not hold the topology publication lock. Listeners must not wait for a later notification from the same cluster.
  • Shutdown closes admission, drops queued work, clears reservations, and cancels current or retired reconnectors. External shutdown still waits for executor teardown; shutdown from an executor listener avoids joining itself.
  • Lifecycle classes live in private cassandra._lifecycle, with ordinary class names, no wildcard exports, and no class re-exports from cassandra.cluster. No CQL or wire-format change is intended.

Testing

Regression coverage includes ordinary/SNI/ClientRoutes removal, endpoint replacement, callback-triggered refresh and shutdown, stale pool completions, DOWN/UP ordering, failed-add recovery, location changes, and overlapping forced refreshes. Unit suites passed on both commits: 1,570 tests on the coordinator introduction and 1,618 tests plus 931 subtests on the integrated implementation (134 skipped). Cython translation and diff checks passed. Live-cluster scenarios required from CI include node removal/rebirth, endpoint movement, and listener-triggered refresh during lifecycle changes.

Decisions

  • Choice: Separate topology publication from ordered lifecycle notification delivery. Run callbacks outside topology and host callback locks so listeners can call synchronous refresh without lock inversion. Source: the selected design in dkropachev/python-driver#6.
  • Choice: refresh_nodes() guarantees node-list and token publication, while queued notifications and DC/rack policy transitions may finish later. An active callback may finish after its Host is retired; subsequent stale work is discarded. This permits callback re-entry while keeping removal notifications ahead of replacement addition. Source: the selected design in dkropachev/python-driver#6.
  • Choice: Run query preparation for UP and ADD handling outside the lifecycle notification queue so it does not delay other hosts’ lifecycle notifications. Source: cluster: coordinate topology publication and host lifecycle #1036 (comment)
  • Choice: Queued removal callbacks always log errors and continue cleanup. Source: cluster: coordinate topology publication and host lifecycle #1036 (comment)
  • Choice: Cluster.on_remove keeps accepting suppress_callback_errors as a documented compatibility no-op. Source: cluster: coordinate topology publication and host lifecycle #1036 (comment)
  • Choice: Keep UP able to supersede unfinished ADD work. When UP succeeds, deliver any pending listener on_add exactly once before on_up, including recovery after a failed ADD. Do not replay policy or control-connection ADD callbacks, and keep stale ADD work fenced.
  • Choice: For ordinary ADD, log policy and control-connection callback failures and release the recovery reservation instead of retrying those callbacks automatically. Keep transport and preparation retries, and retain discovery intent for later explicit recovery. Preserve existing replacement-ADD callback retry behavior.

Pre-review checklist

  • I have split my patch into logically separate commits.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds lifecycle coordination for host transitions, topology refreshes, endpoint replacement, location updates, and ordered notifications. Cluster operations use generations and reservations to reject stale host and pool work. Metadata updates host and endpoint indexes under its host lock. Topology refreshes reject stale snapshots and route removals through the cluster lifecycle. Tests cover callback ordering, refresh races, shutdown, pool failures, and endpoint replacement.

This change reworks how the driver handles nodes being added, removed, coming up, or going down. Some earlier concerns have not been confirmed as fixed. Slow query re-preparation on one host may delay node notifications for every other host. A refresh that is discarded as out of date still reports success. Some new tests may be timing-dependent. Confirm these before merging.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR addresses the linked issue's cleanup and exact-object requirements, but the stated design allows an active removal callback to finish after replacement state is published. The linked issue requires old-object lifecycle callbacks to complete before equal replacement state can be published.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#1007] requires absent-ID cleanup to finish the predecessor lifecycle before an overlapping refresh publishes an equal-ID replacement. The current contract explicitly allows refresh_nodes() to return while a lifecycle callback is running, and test_reentrant_removal_publishes_before_delivering_replacement publishes replacement metadata during the active removal callback. FIFO notification order does not provide the required completion barrier.

Resolution

Serialize absent-ID removal completion with publication of an equal-ID replacement. Add deterministic overlapping-refresh coverage that blocks the predecessor removal callback and verifies that replacement metadata, policies, sessions, and lifecycle notifications are not published before that callback completes.

Docstring coverage is 15.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 261 functions across 8 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

6123-6127: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A discarded stale snapshot reports success.

accept_refresh returns False when a newer revision has already been published. In that case this method returns None without raising, so refresh_node_list_and_token_map returns True. Cluster.refresh_nodes() then reports success although this call published nothing. The newer refresh it lost to may still be running its own notifications. The behavior is documented, but callers cannot tell "published" from "superseded". If the docs promise that publication is synchronous, return or raise a distinct status for the superseded case.

6514-6523: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Some assertions in these tests depend on which thread delivers the queued notifications.

cluster.on_down(...) queues on_down_potentially_blocking through submit_async and calls executor.submit(self.drain). When the test exits its transaction(), either the executor thread or the test thread can claim _draining. If the executor thread claims it, the test thread's drain() returns at once and the assertions run while delivery is still in progress:

  • Line 6522-6523: the second cluster.on_up(host) can be queued behind the executor drainer, so host.is_up is True can fail.
  • Line 6590: listener.on_down.assert_called_once_with(host) can run before on_down_potentially_blocking is delivered.
  • Lines 6546-6550: the negative assertions pass even if the stale _on_up_future_completed event has not run yet.

Use the FIFO sentinel already used in test_queued_add_is_superseded_by_down_but_later_recovery_succeeds. Submit delivered.set after the triggering calls, wait on delivered before each assertion block, and do the same again after the later on_up.

Proposed fix (pattern)
+        delivered = Event()
         with cluster._lifecycle.transaction():
             cluster.on_up(host)
             cluster.on_down(host, False)
+ cluster._lifecycle.submit(delivered.set)
+ assert delivered.wait(5)
         assert host.is_up is False
 ...
+        delivered.clear()
         cluster.on_up(host)
+ cluster._lifecycle.submit(delivered.set)
+ assert delivered.wait(5)
         assert host.is_up is True

Based on learnings: a race test must not rely on incidental timing as its synchronization signal; it needs an explicit synchronization point after the checkpoint it exercises.

Introduce an internal coordinator for host admission, readiness,
retirement and ordered lifecycle notification delivery. Publish state
under short transactions and run callbacks without coordination locks so
listeners can refresh topology or shut down safely.

Keep preparation tokens, readiness generations and addition ownership
alongside pool-failure reservations and refresh intent. Ordinary class
names remain internal through the private module boundary and are not
exported through the public cluster API.

Route topology-discovered removals through exact-host retirement and full
pool, policy, listener and control-connection cleanup. Queue removal before
replacement addition, including SNI and ClientRoutes endpoints, and reject
stale async work without holding callback locks across user code.

Wire UP and DOWN admission, addition ownership, pool-failure handling and
location changes through the coordinator. Prepare queries on executor
workers and resume readiness through guarded FIFO continuations. Preserve
forced refresh intent across overlapping snapshots and bind candidate
sockets without republishing stale topology.

Close admission and discard queued work during shutdown. Document the
separation between synchronous node-list publication and deferred
lifecycle notifications. Keep suppress_callback_errors as a documented
compatibility no-op: queued removal failures always log and cleanup
continues. Cover ordering, recovery and ownership races with regressions
that wait for notification delivery before asserting.

Fixes: #1007
Refs: #921
Keep listener discovery intent separate from ADD recovery ownership so a
successful UP can deliver the pending on_add before on_up, even when it
supersedes failed ADD work. Reject duplicate completions and preserve
stale pool cleanup fences. Cancel obsolete scheduled ADD retries when UP
claims recovery; fence delayed preparation failures with the original
addition token and readiness generation.

Release ordinary ADD recovery ownership after policy or control callback
errors instead of automatically replaying those callbacks. Retain the
listener notification for later recovery, keep preparation and transport
retries, and preserve existing replacement callback retry behavior.

Cover listener reentry, terminal cleanup, reservation release and retry
origin across preparation and reconnection paths with regression tests.
