Summary

  • Add a read-only, paginated utility to report running container ages across clusters visible to StackRox Central, with command-line, CSV, and HTML output.
  • Document setup, age semantics, and output options.

The age is calculated from each running container instance's Kubernetes start timestamp, rounded to the nearest day, and grouped into 30–59, 60–90, and over 90 days. The HTML report has collapsed age sections and a combined, deduplicated labels column.

A sample HTML report generated from the staging demo on October 14, 2026 is attached in the PR conversation.

Validation

  • bash -n util-scripts/container-age-report/stackrox-container-age-report.sh
  • stackrox-container-age-report.sh --help

P1 Badge Avoid silently empty reports on Python 3.6

When this runs with Python 3.6, which satisfies the documented “Python 3” requirement, datetime.fromisoformat does not exist. The resulting AttributeError is caught below for every record, so text and CSV output silently claim there are no qualifying containers instead of failing; use a Python 3.6-compatible parser or explicitly require and validate Python 3.7 or newer.

P2 Badge Honor an explicit token file over the environment token

When ROX_API_TOKEN is already present in the caller's environment, passing --token-file never reads the requested file because this condition only does so when TOKEN is empty. A user selecting credentials for another Central can therefore authenticate with a stale or wrong token; the explicit command-line option should take precedence over the inherited environment value.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a read-only report of active containers aged 30 days or more, grouped into 30–59, 60–90, and over-90-day ranges.
    • Reports include cluster, namespace, image, and selected labels. Choose text, CSV, or HTML output and display it on screen or save it to a file.
    • Configure the Central URL, authentication token, page size, and output format through options or environment variables.
    • HTML reports show age groups collapsed initially.
  • Documentation
    • Added requirements, setup and usage instructions, age-calculation details, output-format guidance, and a sample report.

Adds a Bash utility that retrieves pod and deployment data from RHACS Central, selects active containers at least 30 days old, groups them by age, and emits text, CSV, or HTML reports to stdout or a file. The README documents setup, options, and report behavior.

StackRox RHACS /v1/pods pagination.sortOption support

💡 Result:

**Yes—`/v1/pods` supports `pagination.sortOption`** in the RHACS 4.8 API reference. It defines `V2Pagination.sortOption`; `sortOptions` is a separate field marked as **not supported by the REST API**. ([docs.redhat.com](https://docs.redhat.com/ja/documentation/red_hat_advanced_cluster_security_for_kubernetes/4.8/html/api_reference/common-object-reference?utm_source=openai))

That establishes the field’s presence, but the reference excerpt doesn’t show the allowed values or confirm which pod fields can be sorted. Those details remain unresolved here; the cited reference is for RHACS **4.8**, so behavior in other releases may differ.

RHACS /v1/pods pagination offset sortOption stable ordering snapshot consistency API reference

💡 Result:

## RHACS `GET /v1/pods`

- **API reference:** RHACS 4.8 documents `GET /v1/pods` with query parameters `pagination.limit`, `pagination.offset`, and `pagination.sortOption.field` / `.reversed` (plus aggregation options). The response type is `V1PodsResponse`. ([docs.redhat.com](https://docs.redhat.com/en/documentation/red_hat_advanced_cluster_security_for_kubernetes/4.8/html-single/api_reference/api_reference?utm_source=openai))
- **What that establishes:** the endpoint accepts offset pagination and a sort option. The reference does **not** establish a default ordering, a unique tie-breaker for equal sort values, or that repeated offset requests read from one fixed snapshot.
- **Caveat:** Red Hat separately documented pagination problems with `limit` and `offset` for **policy listing** in RHACS 4, but that report does not establish that `/v1/pods` has the same issue. ([access.redhat.com](https://access.redhat.com/solutions/7058313?utm_source=openai))
- **Practical implication (inference):** don’t assume offset pages are stable under concurrent pod changes, or that sorting by a non-unique field prevents duplicates/skips. The RHACS reference alone does not promise either.
- **Snapshot comparison:** Kubernetes’ native Pod list API supports `limit` + `continue` tokens that preserve a consistent collection snapshot across chunks. That is a different endpoint/API contract; the RHACS `/v1/pods` reference does not document equivalent snapshot semantics. ([v1-32.docs.kubernetes.io](https://v1-32.docs.kubernetes.io/docs/reference/using-api/api-concepts/?utm_source=openai))

**Bottom line:** use `pagination.limit` / `pagination.offset` and `sortOption` as documented, but treat stable ordering and snapshot consistency as **unspecified** for RHACS `/v1/pods`. The cited API reference is version 4.8; behavior in other RHACS versions remains unverified.

Make pagination consistency explicit.

When pods are added or removed during the scan, offset pages can shift. The report can omit or repeat live instances. The current loop does not request a stable sort, and it appends records without identity-based deduplication.

Use a documented stable, unique pagination.sortOption field when the target Central versions support one. Otherwise, document that the report is best-effort and is not snapshot-consistent. Deduplication can remove repeats, but it cannot recover skipped pods.

Warn when deployment metadata cannot be parsed.

The deployment export reader silently skips malformed or unexpected records. When no deployment record is parsed, the report falls back to (unavailable) images and empty labels without warning. Track parsed records and warn when a non-empty response contains none.
