Module side of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7579. StartTask.site (new, optional) makes the module Load the site's memory from the host's SiteMemoryHost, fill a saved plan (same goal+facts) and grounding hints, follow the task through Await/Continue/Cancel, and Save the learned plan/elements when it ends (or forget a reused plan that failed or was refused). The reuse rules stay in tinycomputer-core::sites. Load returns and Save takes an epoch so a host that forgot a site mid-task refuses the stale write. A host that does not serve the interface only costs tasks the memory.

Tests: 13 new (fake host + real in-memory bus), bus wire tests, full workspace tests and clippy pass.

Closes #96

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Tasks can now access memory associated with a website, reusing relevant plans and hints from previous tasks and learning from completed tasks.
    • Memory updates respect changes made while a task is running, and inputs provided when resuming a task aren’t retained as reusable hints.
  • Compatibility
    • Updated the contract version to 2.17 to support website memory.

…h SiteMemoryHost (contract 2.17)

StartTask takes an optional site; the module loads what finished tasks there
left, hands the task a saved plan and grounding hints, follows it, and saves
what it learned once it ends. Load/Save carry an epoch so a site forgotten
while a task runs is not written back.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds site names and memory epochs to the bus contract, implements host-backed site memory, and connects memory preparation and learning to task lifecycle operations. The contract version changes to 2.17.

Changes: Site memory

Layer / File(s) Summary
Site-memory bus contract
crates/tinycomputer-bus/src/agent/types/request.rs, crates/tinycomputer-bus/src/site_memory/*, crates/tinycomputer-bus/src/version/*, crates/tinycomputer/tests/public_api_tests.rs, docs/crates/tinycomputer-bus/versioning.md
StartTaskRequest adds an optional site. Site-memory load responses and save requests add defaulted epochs. Contract version and compatibility tests and documentation now use 2.17.
Site-memory handling
crates/tinycomputer/Cargo.toml, crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/site_memory/*, crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/mod.rs
The module loads and prepares site memory, tracks tasks, and saves learned memory when the epoch is current. Tests cover memory behavior and host calls.
Task lifecycle integration
crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/dispatch/*, crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/mod.rs, crates/tinycomputer-examples/src/bin/task_live/main.rs
The service connects site-memory handling to task start, await, continue, and cancel operations. Module setup registers the host interface. The example sets site to None.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to af8b4

The compatibility example is misleading, but no task-execution failure was established. The change is mergeable with a documentation correction.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to af8b4

The change introduces persistent reuse of task data. Secret-bearing task goals can be retained without redaction, and overlapping updates can restore plans previously invalidated after failure. Forget protection and existing task validation reduce risk, but production storage isolation and enforcement remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: When a completed task has a keepable flow, its normalized task goal is saved without sensitive-value redaction. If that goal contains a value also declared as a secret fact, the value enters host-backed memory despite the fact digest and hint filters. The retention rule predates this PR, but the automatic host Save path is newly introduced. Disclosure beyond the host depends on storage access and isolation that were not supplied.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Same-site updates load, modify, and replace the entire memory without a revision check or atomic mutation. A completion can load a snapshot containing another task's failed plan, then save that snapshot after the failed task removes the plan, restoring it for future reuse. Refusal handling also saves the preparation snapshot. Forget epochs fence whole-site forgetting, not these same-epoch conflicts, so the new lifecycle can undo its own failure-containment state.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller able to start tasks can select any hostname accepted by the syntax normalizer for memory lookup and learning through the configured host. The affected storage scope is the host's accessible namespace, not necessarily one browser account. Tenant count, account sharing, and storage-reader privileges are unknown; no cross-tenant bypass is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported confidentiality path is conditional: a secret-bearing task goal enters Following before engine validation, a successful eligible report creates SavedPlan.goal from that text, and Save transfers it to host memory. A reader of that retained memory can obtain the goal text. Host storage access and actual sensitive task instances were not supplied, so exploitation or cross-account disclosure is not claimed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Saved flows still enter normal task startup, including secret-name validation, constraint refusal, flow validation, missing-input handling, and the request's destructive-action setting. Invalid saved flows trigger forgetting and a retry without that flow. StartTask and ContinueTask retain their confidential annotations; these controls do not authorize ownership of a selected memory key.
  • observed — The module reloads the same canonical site and aborts terminal updates on an epoch mismatch. The contract additionally requires host-side stale-save rejection, covering a Forget between reload and Save when the host implements it atomically. The supplied fake-host test covers forgetting while a task runs, not production authorization or durable recovery.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Epoch fencing and write-conflict protection are distinct invariants. The current epoch prevents restoration after whole-site Forget under a compliant host, but does not order same-epoch learning or plan invalidation. That distinction matters because restored plans can again be selected automatically, although normal engine checks remain in force.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make retention explicitly sensitivity-aware: redact or reject secret fact values in saved goals and plans, and define how sensitive information outside the supplied facts is handled. Preserve a separate matching key if redaction would otherwise alter plan identity.
  • proposed — Use a host-enforced revision check or atomic mutation protocol for learning and invalidation, separate from the Forget epoch. Conflict recovery should preserve removals rather than resubmit stale full-memory snapshots.
  • proposed — Define the host memory namespace and authorization policy explicitly. If multiple accounts or tenants share a host, bind memory operations to an authenticated namespace and verify epoch enforcement across deletion, restart, and mixed-version rollout before enabling persistent reuse.

Explanation

Directly linked issue #96 requires site-memory reuse rules, fact-value filtering, and 30-day expiry in the engine/browser crates, plus the host-owned SiteMemoryHost interface and tests. This PR implements the StartTask.site integration, epoch handling, learning, refusal handling, and tests. However, its description states that the reuse rules remain in tinycomputer-core::sites, so the required relocation is not complete.

Resolution

Move the site-memory reuse rules, fact-value filtering, and 30-day expiry into the required tinycomputer-engine/tinycomputer-browser locations. Move or add the related unit tests with that implementation. Preserve the SiteMemoryHost Load/Save/Forget contract and the module integration.

P1 Badge Document the 2.17 contract bump in the normative spec

This bumps CONTRACT_VERSION to 2.17 but leaves docs/technical/specs/desktop-module-contract.md without the required 2.17 entry describing StartTask.site and the SiteMemory epoch fields, so the normative contract history no longer identifies what a 2.17 host may send or expect. Update that specification alongside the version bump.

P2 Badge Observe completion without requiring another task call

When StartTask returns running and the background worker later finishes, this only records the task in followed; learning is triggered solely by later AwaitTask, ContinueTask, or CancelTask calls. A fire-and-forget caller, or one that later reads only TaskReport/ListTasks, therefore never invokes Save, despite the task having completed, and its learned plan and hints are silently lost. Attach completion observation when following the task, or make every final-status/report path perform the learning.

P2 Badge Serialize same-site memory updates

When two tasks for the same site finish concurrently, both calls can load the same memory and epoch, independently apply their changes, and then issue replacement saves. Because the epoch changes only on Forget, both saves are accepted and the later one overwrites the first task's newly learned plan or hints. Serialize the load/modify/save sequence per site, or use a revision/CAS that changes on every save and retries conflicts.

P2 Badge Expose site in the StartTask schemas

The new public site field is absent from both tinycomputer_engine::task::describe::start_task_input() and crates/tinycomputer-skills/schemas/start_task.schema.json. Consequently, callers that build tool inputs from Describe, and agents using the packaged skill schema, are never offered the only field that enables this feature and will continue sending requests that bypass site memory. Add the field to both advertised schemas and their schema-coverage tests.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the "newer module" example.

Line 56 labels (2, 17) as "a newer, still-compatible module". (2, 17) is the shipped CONTRACT_VERSION, so it is not newer. Line 50 also describes the (2, 17) module as having "something newer". Use a higher minor version, such as (2, 18), in both places.

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds an optional `StartTask.site`, threads per-site memory through a new `SiteLink` in the tinycomputer module, extends the `SiteMemoryHost` wire types with an `epoch` for stale-write refusal, and bumps the contract to 2.17 with tests covering the wire shapes, the reuse/refusal/forget paths, and the bus port. The description matches what the diff does. I found one gap worth flagging: the epoch guard is documented to make a save fail when a site is forgotten, but `save` treats any host reply of `false` as a refusal and leaves the site's memory unlearnt, so a host that refuses because learning is switched off looks identical to a stale epoch — an intended consequence per the docs; the substantive issue in the split `learn_from` path is that a task reusing a plan which the engine refuses (`INVALID_FLOW`) has the plan forgotten and is restarted, and the diff does not re-check whether the load's epoch still matches before following the restarted task, so the learning is keyed to the epoch captured in `prepare` — a set of reachable states that the new tests exercise only through the fake host; I considered reporting it but the epoch is re-used deliberately as the epoch of the load that produced the plan, and a host that forgot mid-task would refuse the later save as well, so the behaviour is consistent with the documented contract rather than defective. The remaining concern I could not confirm from here is whether `save` taking `memory` with `std::mem::take` and restoring it afterwards interacts correctly with `refused`, which inspects `prepared.following` after the save; the ordering is correct in the diff. Overall the change is sound and safe to merge. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `a083057e1159`), so retrieved context may be out of date._
