Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328 (phase 5).

Assesses browser/helper process startup and egress. Result: no enforceable sandbox/proxy contract exists in the module (Chrome is spawned by agent-browser with no proxy forwarded; helpers need host desktop access), so none is added. Adds docs/technical/specs/process-containment.md listing every unsupported process explicitly, and a test that fails when a crate gains a process spawn not named in the doc. No release needed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation

    • Added technical documentation describing process containment limitations, host-level execution, approval controls, and supported network behavior.
    • Added the process-containment document to the technical specifications index.
  • Tests

    • Added automated coverage to verify that process launches within the project are documented and traceable to the relevant technical specification.

📒 Files selected for processing: 1
  • crates/tinycomputer-core/tests/process_inventory.rs
📝 Walkthrough

The change documents process-containment limits, lists spawned processes and their network status, and adds an integration test that checks source files containing Command::new( against the documentation.

Changes: Process Containment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Containment and egress boundaries
docs/technical/specs/process-containment.md
The document states that the module has no enforceable sandbox, proxy, or egress contract. It distinguishes host-side policy for model calls from browser traffic to user-directed sites.
Process inventory and documentation check
docs/technical/specs/process-containment.md, docs/technical/specs/README.md, crates/tinycomputer-core/tests/process_inventory.rs
The document inventories process launch paths, and the specifications index links to it. The integration test scans crate source files and reports spawn-containing files not listed in the document.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c1e7b

The containment decision is documented, but the inventory check can miss a newly added spawn path. Tighten its path match before relying on it; this is a bounded documentation-check risk.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c1e7b

The PR makes existing containment limits explicit without changing runtime privileges, network access, or authorization. No introduced or worsened security risk was identified. The inventory test is a documentation aid, not a containment guarantee.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The specification identifies the user's desktop and browser network access as outside module-provided containment. The PR documents that exposure without adding production callers, privileges, or deployment changes. This is not evidence that every listed process or host configuration has been independently assessed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The accepted policy places module admission and member-level approval, payment-stop, and POLICY_DENIED responsibilities on the host. Those gates are distinct from process isolation and browser network enforcement. The PR states this responsibility split; the host implementation and effective deployment controls were not supplied or verified.
  • observed — The selected accessibility and cursor implementations already launch helper executables with standard-input pipes. Their launch blocks are unchanged in the full PR comparison. The cursor path may come from an explicit argument, an environment variable, a neighboring executable, or PATH; this pre-existing executable-selection authority is not expanded by the PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inventory test detects the literal Command::new( in readable Rust files under crates, excluding specified test and example paths. Read failures are skipped, and documentation membership is matched by crate name and file stem rather than exact path. Consequently, the check cannot attest to exhaustive process coverage or distinguish every same-stem file within a crate. This is a limitation of the new documentation aid, not an observed runtime containment bypass.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If the inventory check becomes an input to host containment assurance, use explicit normalized source paths and fail on incomplete scans, while documenting the detection syntax and excluded sources. Treat this as stronger inventory assurance, not as sandbox or egress enforcement.

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The new guard test's logic is sound: its walk covers `crates/` including `build.rs`, its substring match for `Command::new(` also catches `std::process::Command::new(`, and it correctly skips test files and itself. The only defect is that the file's name breaks the repository's own rule for where integration tests live and what they cover. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `c1e7b46118de`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The documentation match is loose and can hide an undocumented spawn.

The check passes if any single line contains the crate name and the file stem. Common stems such as mod, process, or focus can match unrelated text. For example, any line that mentions tinycomputer-accessibility and the word process passes. A new spawn in crates/tinycomputer-accessibility/src/other/process.rs would then count as documented. Match on the full relative path, or on the stem together with its parent directory.

P1 Badge Match documented spawn sites by exact path

A new spawn in a reused filename can bypass this guard: for example, crates/tinycomputer-accessibility/src/other/process.rs is accepted because the existing inventory line contains both tinycomputer-accessibility and process, even though that path and process were never documented. Compare the normalized relative path against structured inventory entries rather than matching only the crate and file stem.

The module's own outbound traffic is the decision model, planner, rescue and
output model calls (the `jev`, `planner` config routes), made from the host
process, plus whatever sites the browser is told to open. Host-side egress

P1 Badge Include remote browser endpoints in the egress inventory

When SessionOptions::endpoint is set to an http://, ws://, or wss:// DevTools endpoint, crates/tinycomputer-browser/src/convert/session.rs forwards it as cdpUrl, causing the module to connect directly to that endpoint. This traffic is neither a model call nor traffic from a browser to a site, so the stated exhaustive egress list omits a supported outbound connection that a host needs to account for.

[`../plans/`](../plans/README.md). Keep code snippets small enough to clarify
the contract; production code still belongs under `src/`.

See [`process-containment.md`](process-containment.md) for which spawned processes the host cannot contain.

P1 Badge Link the new specification from both required indexes

Adding the link only to the specifications index leaves the new document absent from both docs/README.md and the root "Read The Right Document First" table, so contributors looking for the repository's containment rules through the prescribed entry points will not find it. Add the required links in both places.

P1 Badge Move the inventory check out of the core integration suite

This file is placed under tinycomputer-core/tests, but it neither exercises that crate's public API nor follows the required *_tests.rs integration-test naming; instead it crawls unrelated workspace source and documentation. Move this repository-wide policy check into CI/tooling, rather than coupling cargo test -p tinycomputer-core to the checkout layout.

The document is marked Accepted while omitting the specification template's goals/non-goals, proposed behavior, invariants, acceptance criteria, and open questions, and this commit implements the inventory test without creating the required linked implementation plan. Complete those sections and add the plan so the decision and its verification remain auditable.
