Part of tinyhumansai/openhuman#7328 (phase 7, item 3: wire tinycomputer consequence/payment gates into the host approval/policy path).

The module classified irreversible and paying controls and paused tasks before them, but the only gate on the pause was ContinueTask { approve: true }, with no seam for the host's security policy to rule on it.

  • New optional host-callback interface ai.tinyhumans.tinycomputer.ConsequenceHost (tinycomputer_bus::consequence_host), member Review (task, action, target, module classification irreversible|payment). Contract 2.19.
  • ContinueTask with approve: true on a needs_approval pause calls Review first; a denial converts the approval into a decline.
  • Fails closed: a host that serves the interface but errors/times out denies. A host that serves nothing keeps the existing pause as the gate.
  • Payment checkpoints are non-continuable and need no review.

Tests: wire-form and identity tests in the bus crate; link tests (allow, deny, decline passthrough, nothing pending, failing host, unserved host) and real-bus port tests in the module. clippy 1.98 -D warnings clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional host review before approving paused actions classified as irreversible or payment-related. Host denials or review failures decline the action; if no review host is available, approval continues without this additional check.
    • Added a host interface for reviewing actions and updated the contract version to 2.19.
  • Documentation
    • Updated contract versioning and desktop module documentation to describe the review flow.

The coverage is genuinely behavioural — the fakes record what was sent and the assertions pin the verdicts — but one documented invariant, that the host's review happens "before the approval reaches the task", is not pinned by any test: the tests exercise `ConsequenceLink::screen` directly and never go through `review_approval`, which is the code that reads `TaskStatus::NeedsApproval` off `Tasks::list` and the only thing that runs ahead of `continue_task`. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `99073218df0f`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

The TinyBus contract adds an optional ConsequenceHost review interface in version 2.19. The TinyBus module classifies actions and screens approval requests through that interface before continuing tasks.

Changes: Consequence review

Layer / File(s) Summary
Host contract and version 2.19
crates/tinycomputer-bus/src/consequence_host/*, crates/tinycomputer-bus/src/lib.rs, crates/tinycomputer-bus/src/version/*, crates/tinycomputer/tests/public_api_tests.rs, docs/crates/tinycomputer-bus/versioning.md
The public bus crate adds ConsequenceHost, its Review method, and request and response types. Tests cover interface identity and JSON values. Contract version declarations, compatibility checks, and versioning documentation change to 2.19.
Consequence classification and screening
crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/consequence_gate/*
ConsequenceLink classifies payment and irreversible actions, calls the host through the bus, and converts review results into verdicts. Tests cover classification, host responses, and bus transport.
Task continuation review
crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/dispatch/*, crates/tinycomputer/src/tinybus_module/mod.rs, docs/technical/specs/desktop-module-contract.md
DesktopService attaches the review link and screens approval requests before task continuation. The module declares ConsequenceHost as optional. The desktop contract documents the review behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2b704

An approval could authorize a later irreversible or payment action without host review. Bind continuation to the reviewed pause before merging; also correct the misleading compatibility example.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2b704

Host review adds a useful security gate, but its decision is not tied to the exact paused action. Overlapping approvals may let a later irreversible action proceed without its own review. The practical exposure depends on who can continue tasks and how host identity is enforced.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The host verdict is not bound to the pause it reviewed. Two overlapping approvals can snapshot pause A; after the first approval resumes the task and it reaches pause B, the delayed approval for A can consume B's resume without reviewing B. This can bypass the newly promised action-specific host policy. The controller rejects non-waiting states and consumes each resume once, but neither protection checks pause identity.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The stale-verdict concern applies to tasks a caller can continue in this desktop service, with effects through each task's existing application or browser authority. Repetition could affect successive approval pauses. The evidence does not establish anonymous reachability, cross-tenant access or additional infrastructure privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A caller able to issue overlapping ContinueTask approvals could obtain two host allowances for action A, let one request advance the task to action B, and have the delayed request approve B without B reaching host policy. This is a source-supported interleaving, not a runtime-verified exploit; it requires overlapping calls and a subsequent approval pause.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — ContinueTask remains marked confidential. The new outbound Review sends task and action descriptions to the fixed host endpoint. Explicit denial and non-absence errors veto approval; absent-interface errors preserve it. These call-site controls do not establish transport-level host ownership or caller authorization.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The engine's current-status check rejects normal continuation after a task leaves its waiting state, and resume.take() prevents consuming the same resume twice. These are meaningful countercontrols, but they do not prevent a delayed verdict from consuming a different, later resume for the same task.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind review to an engine-owned pause generation or reservation and atomically compare-and-consume that identity before execution. Invalidate it on cancellation or state change, reject stale decisions, and exercise delayed duplicate approvals across successive pauses.
  • proposed — For deployments that require host policy, explicitly configure that requirement and bind the expected host identity. Treat endpoint loss as denial in that mode while retaining documented absent-host compatibility for deployments that intentionally use only the approval pause.

P1 Badge Do not treat a lost reviewer as unconfigured

When a configured ConsequenceHost disconnects or restarts before Review, TinyBus reports NameHasNoOwner; similarly, a process owning the name but exposing a broken endpoint reports UnknownObject or UnknownInterface. Classifying all three as NotServed makes screen preserve approve: true, so an irreversible or paying action proceeds precisely while its policy reviewer is unavailable. Only a reviewer established as never configured should fail open; loss or misconfiguration of an expected reviewer must produce Failed and decline the action.

P1 Badge Bind each verdict to the reviewed checkpoint

The paused action is snapshotted before awaiting the host, but the eventual continue_task consumes whichever approval pause currently belongs to that task ID. With two concurrent ContinueTask { approve: true } calls, both can review checkpoint A; if one returns first and the task reaches checkpoint B before the other returns, the delayed approval is applied to B even though the host never reviewed B. Revalidate or atomically consume the exact reviewed checkpoint before resuming, and cover concurrent calls through the module's in-memory bus.

Bind approval decisions to the reviewed pause.

review_approval snapshots the current action and target before awaiting the host, but tasks.continue_task receives only the approval boolean. If one request resumes the task and it reaches a later NeedsApproval pause before a second request is dispatched, decide takes the later state.resume without checking the reviewed action or target. The second request can therefore approve an action that the host did not review.

Carry a pause identity or generation into decide, and atomically reject the continuation when it does not match the current pause before taking state.resume.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a newer minor in the "newer, still-compatible module" example.

Line 56 labels (2, 19) as "a newer, still-compatible module". That value is now the shipped version from Line 55, so the example no longer shows a newer module. Lines 50-52 have the same problem: they say a module reporting (2, 19) has "something newer". Use (2, 20) in both places.
