The ordinary and embedded-space cases passed with .strip() too, and so would a leading space: backend paths are absolute, so the joined string never starts with whitespace. Keep the one case that fails without the fix, exclude it from Windows coverage where it is skipped, and add the news fragment the changelog check requires. Mark the new locals Final.

A build backend that lives in a directory whose name ends with a space, such as
backend, could not be imported:SubprocessFrontendstripped surrounding whitespace from thePYTHONPATHit built for the backend process, so the last directory on it pointed somewhere that does not exist. 🐛 Projects with such abackend-pathentry now build. The frontend joins the configured backend paths unchanged. Backend paths are absolute, so the joined value never starts with whitespace, and only a trailing space on the last entry was affected. Windows removes trailing spaces from file names, so the problem does not occur there.
