Summary

Drops @jridgewell/trace-mapping from dependencies (it stays a devDependency, so tests still check maps with an independent decoder) and uses webpack's own webpack-sources instead, adding no dependency:

Which webpack-sources is used. Only webpack's: compiler.webpack.sources in the plugin, and require("webpack").sources in workers, where there is no compiler (src/sources.js). SourceMapSource with an inner map exists in every webpack-sources webpack 5 ships. util.sourceMap is new in 3.7.0, so with an older copy buildError reports minifier errors at their minified position, as it does without a source map. A TODO marks dropping that check in the next major release.

Composed maps now point each token at its exact original column. On a real build (three entries, devtool: "source-map"), I checked for every named mapping whether the name sits at the mapped original position:

named mappings name at its original position
before, 1 minimizer 588 38 (6%)
after, 1 minimizer 581 581 (100%)
before, 2 chained 596 42 (7%)
after, 2 chained 580 580 (100%)

trace-mapping is still installed for users through terser → @jridgewell/source-map, so the install shrinks only once terser is no longer a dependency.

What kind of change does this PR introduce?

refactor

Did you add tests for your changes?

Yes.

  • test/source-map-chain.test.js checks every named mapping against the original source, through 1, 2 and 3 terser steps, terser then uglify-js, and in workers. The existing chain tests only snapshot the map and are skipped on Node < 18 and Windows; this file runs everywhere and fails on the old composer (all 5 cases).
  • test/sources.test.js covers getSources (the default require("webpack")) and getSourceMapUtil with 3.7.0 and with older copies (with or without util).
  • test/minify-option.test.js covers a map without mappings passed to the next minimizer.
  • test/MinimizerPlugin.test.js (buildError method) covers an error mapped back to its original file, and one kept at its minified position when webpack's webpack-sources has no util.sourceMap.

28 source-map snapshots changed, and I decoded each one: only mappings differs. All 791 tests pass against the published webpack-sources 3.7.0.

I also built the packed plugin with two chained terserMinify steps and devtool: "source-map", both serially and with parallel: true. Each build had 0 errors, and every named mapping from src/index.js (14) sits at its original position:

webpack install webpack-sources used
5.1.0 npm webpack's 2.3.1
5.1.0 Yarn 4 PnP, pnpMode: strict webpack's 2.3.1
5.112.2 Yarn 4 PnP, pnpMode: strict webpack's 3.7.0

Under PnP, require("webpack") resolves in workers because webpack is a peer dependency, and the plugin never requires webpack-sources itself.

Does this PR introduce a breaking change?

No. The supported range stays webpack@^5.1.0 (verified on 5.1.0 above). With a webpack whose webpack-sources predates 3.7.0, minifier errors show their minified position instead of the original one; source maps themselves are composed either way. On main, trace-mapping mapped errors back on any webpack. Current webpack depends on webpack-sources@^3.5.1, which a fresh install resolves to 3.7.0, so this affects only older webpack releases (5.1.0 depends on ^2.0.1) and lockfiles pinned to an older copy. In the types, RawSourceMap is now the map type webpack's Source#map() returns, so the types need nothing beyond webpack, and the private buildError takes a raw map instead of a TraceMap.

If relevant, what needs to be documented once your changes are merged or what have you already documented?

The minify signature in README.md now uses that RawSourceMap type.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved source-map composition across chained minimizers, including worker mode, to preserve mapped names and original-source references.
    • Minifier errors can now point to their original source locations, including exact columns when supported.
    • With older webpack versions, errors may still point to their minified positions.
  • Documentation

    • Updated minifyFn source-map type documentation to align with webpack’s types.

If a custom minimizer returns decoded `currentMap.mappings` and the previous map
has no mappings, `SourceMapSource.map()` can return `null`. The fallback then
returns the original decoded `currentMap`, not the encoded copy passed here.
`src/index.js` passes that map to another `SourceMapSource`, whose mapping
reader requires a string. Preserve the encoded `currentMap` for the fallback as
well.

Walkthrough

The plugin now uses SourceMapSource to compose maps across minimizer steps and webpack source-map utilities to map minifier error positions. It updates the minifyFn documentation and public type declarations to use webpack raw maps. The changes also update dependency placement and add tests for error positions, empty mappings, named mappings, minimizer chains, and worker output.

Priority: Normal

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review bad4e

A custom minimizer can cause compilation to fail when its decoded map follows an empty map. Fix that path before merging. On older supported webpack versions, minifier errors also retain minified coordinates.

Preserve decoded custom maps in composeSourceMaps.

When webpack provides an input source map, the first custom minimizer returns its decoded mappings array and composeSourceMaps passes it directly to SourceMapSource. webpack-sources@3.7.0 calls mappings.charCodeAt(i), so the first composition throws before the built-in Terser minimizer runs. The asset handler records a compilation error and does not update the asset.

Restore the previous TraceMap-based composition in composeSourceMaps, or encode decoded mappings before calling SourceMapSource. The correction belongs at this composition boundary, not in the asset error handler.

Re CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on composeSourceMaps (decoded mappings from a custom minimizer): confirmed, SourceMapSource threw mappings.charCodeAt is not a function. Fixed in bad4efc. Maps are now normalized to encoded mappings at the composition boundary by a small VLQ encoder, with no dependency. It round-trips terser's maps byte for byte. test/source-map-chain.test.js now covers a decoded map as the first and as the last step of a chain; both tests failed before the fix.
