feat(reviews): reviewer metadata contract + real reviewer signals; fix /merchants row truncation - #113
Conversation
…ewer signals (#112) - ScrapedReviewer on ShopeeReview.reviewer (+ likeCount): pseudonymous key, anonymity, profile URL, join date, review count, helpful votes, verified purchase, purchase time, repeat purchase. All optional; platforms expose different subsets and undefined means "not exposed". - Ingestion writes is_verified_buyer from the platform (NULL when unknown instead of the column default true) and hands the scrape's reviewer data to the analyzer. - account_age_bucket / reviewer_history_score are derived from reviewer data (they were constants 'medium' / 0.7). Reviewer facts are sent to the LLM pass with an explicit "null is not evidence" instruction. PostgREST caps responses at max-rows (1000) and drops the rest silently. getMerchantsList read products with no limit and only the latest 1000 reviews of the whole table, so merchants with older reviews would be scored on nothing once the table grows; getRatePlatformStats read master_products and products unbounded. Read them in pages instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01SJ8kEoAgmss5ZwS8ziunTj

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Fail the read when a page fails.
If a later page fails, fetchAllRows returns the earlier pages as a complete result. getMerchantsList can then publish incorrect merchant counts and review-risk scores. getRatePlatformStats can publish incorrect platform counts. Throw the page error so the callers do not return a successful response with incomplete data. (supabase.com)

Not changing this in this PR. Path traced: getMerchantsList is called by the homepage, /contact-us, /merchants, the sitemap, /api/v1/rate/merchants and every extension lookup (server/rate/extension.ts:748). getRatePlatformStats backs the homepage. None of them catch errors, so throwing would turn a transient error on page N into a failed homepage or failed extension lookup.
Before this PR, the same reads ignored errors and continued with an empty array, which is no more correct than a partial result. The real fix is to compute merchant aggregates in SQL (one RPC that fails atomically), which needs a DOS.Me migration and is being raised with the owner. The console.error stays, so failures are visible.

JOY (@JOY) Thanks for the context. I agree that throwing without caller error handling would introduce an availability regression. I won’t press for that change in this PR.
The partial-data risk remains, but the atomic SQL RPC is a separate follow-up that requires a DOS.Me migration. Keeping console.error preserves failure visibility.
Would you like a GitHub follow-up issue, or is the owner discussion already tracked?

Learning: In DOS/Rate, getMerchantsList and getRatePlatformStats in apps/web/src/lib/rate-api.ts serve availability-sensitive callers that do not catch their errors, including the homepage and extension lookup paths. Changing these reads from best-effort results to thrown errors requires caller error handling. Moving merchant aggregates to an atomic SQL RPC requires a DOS.Me migration coordinated with its owner.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Restrict the product and review reads to the selected merchants.
The merchant query has a limit, but these two reads fetch every product and every full review before calculating summaries for the selected merchants. As the tables grow, each /merchants request transfers and retains unrelated rows and makes more sequential page requests. Fetch the merchant rows first, then restrict or aggregate products and reviews for those merchant IDs. Paging limits each response, not the total work of this request. (supabase.com)
Based on learnings, collection endpoints should avoid unbounded reads as their tables grow.

Partly addressed: 7c0a038 narrows the review read to id, product_id, review_flags(verdict, flag_category, include_in_rating), the only fields the risk score uses.
Restricting by merchant id would not reduce the work. Almost every caller passes no limit, so the merchant set is all merchants. Scoping reviews needs a join through products, and an .in() list that size does not fit in a URL. The proportionate fix is a SQL aggregate per merchant (an RPC or view), which needs a DOS.Me migration. That is being proposed to the owner together with the reviewer-persistence migration.

JOY (@JOY) Thanks for clarifying. The supplied code confirms that the review read now selects only the IDs and flag fields needed for risk scoring.
When the selected merchant set includes all merchants, merchant filtering does not reduce the scan. My proposed restriction was not sufficient for that common path. A per-merchant SQL aggregate is the appropriate follow-up.
The payload concern is addressed; the total-work concern remains deferred. Would you like a follow-up issue for the aggregate, linked to the DOS.Me migration proposal?

Learning: In DOS/Rate, most callers of getMerchantsList in apps/web/src/lib/rate-api.ts omit limit and need summaries for all merchants. Filtering products and reviews by that merchant set does not reduce the common-path scan. Per-merchant SQL aggregation through an RPC or view requires a DOS.Me migration and owner coordination.

getMerchantsList pages through every review to compute the review risk, which only uses verdict / flag_category / include_in_rating. Select just those instead of every column.
