New guide at /guides/windows-server-monitoring, rewritten for readers deciding what to monitor on Windows servers and which tool to use.

What the page covers

  1. Overview: what Windows server monitoring catches (a stopped service, a disk filling up, CPU or memory pressure, Event Log errors and failed logins) and the goal of the guide in one sentence.
  2. Signals to watch: one card per signal with why it matters and a starting alert. Each signal has its own color, reused in the config keys and the alerts.
  3. Tools compared: one table covering the built-in tools (Performance Monitor, Event Viewer, Windows Admin Center), open source (Zabbix, Prometheus + windows_exporter, OpenTelemetry Collector) and commercial (PRTG, Datadog), with what each is good for, how it alerts and what it costs. A "Picking one" table matches setups to tools. The table stacks into cards on mobile.
  4. Set it up: MSI install, one config.yaml (host metrics, service states, Event Log errors and failed logins), the ingest key on the service, and restart. Every code block has a copy button.
  5. Alerts to set up first: a stopped service, a disk filling up, and Event Log errors (with a failed-login variant), as Maple alert rule steps. A callout covers a server that is switched off.
  6. FAQ.

Search intent: people comparing Windows server monitoring tools who want to know what to watch and how to get alerts.

Shared changes

  • guide-highlight.ts: main's version plus a powershell tokenizer.

Verification

  • Collector config: otelcol-contrib 0.164.0 (Docker image). validate checks that every component's keys decode. A typo in windows_service, windows_event_log or the filesystem exclude_fs_types block is rejected. With the Windows receivers outside the pipelines, the config validates and runs: host metrics start and reach the exporter. On Linux, pipeline build fails for the Windows receivers ("only supported on Windows"). The config has not been run on a Windows host.
  • PowerShell snippets: parsed with pwsh (mcr.microsoft.com/powershell), 0 errors. The MSI URL for 0.164.0 returns 200. The snippets were not run on Windows.
  • Maple alert steps: checked against the alert rule docs and the query engine (severity and service.name log filters, the metrics group-by on attr.*, and the ERROR severity text the Collector's stanza adapter sets).
  • bun run --cwd apps/landing build passes. The page was reviewed in Playwright screenshots on desktop and mobile with no console errors.
  • Screenshots: 02-service-status is kept and 03-event-logs is cropped to the record. 01-hosts is removed because its disk column reads 0%.

Maple docs linked

Sources (verified October 31, 2026)

OpenTelemetry Collector Contrib receiver READMEs (host metrics, windows_service, windows_event_log), the collector-releases MSI template and the v0.164.0 assets. Zabbix license page, the windows_exporter README, PRTG freeware and pricing pages, and Datadog pricing.

Takeaways pass

  • Key takeaways box after the intro.
  • One sentence in the intro on what goes wrong without monitoring: the first sign is a user who can't reach the app.

Explanation

The title "feat(landing): Windows server monitoring tools guide" matches the main change. The PR adds a new /guides/windows-server-monitoring page covering Windows monitoring tools, counters, thresholds, and OpenTelemetry Collector setup. It also registers the guide in the guides index and llms.txt, and adds PowerShell and SQL highlighting. The title is concise, specific, and follows a conventional commit style.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Turn on host.arch in the config, or remove host.arch from the note.

The note on Line 544 says resourcedetection adds host.name, os.type and host.arch. The system detector turns on only host.name and os.type by default. The config on Lines 235-236 does not override that default. As a result, readers who copy this config do not get host.arch, and the Hosts detail page cannot show the host architecture. Upstream-derived docs list host.arch with the note Sets enabled to false by default. Other sources also say Only host.name and os.type are on by default.

📝 Proposed fix: turn on host.arch

Per-resource counter overview with thresholds, built-in tools as tabs,
tool types and a choosing checklist, a Collector data-flow diagram and
highlighted PowerShell, YAML and SQL. Adds powershell and sql to the guide
highlighter and a group prop to LanguageTabs so non-language tabs keep
their own remembered pick.

Leads with the signals worth an alert, compares built-in, open-source and
commercial tools, then sets up the OpenTelemetry Collector (0.164 component
names) with alerts for stopped services, full disks and Event Log errors.
Snippets live next to the page so the published config is the validated one.

Warning

Install script downloads a windows_x64 MSI the releases do not publish

F3 · Warning · correctness

The collector releases name their MSI after Go's arch, otelcol-contrib_<version>_windows_amd64.msi; there is no windows_x64 asset. Invoke-WebRequest on a reader's server ends the first setup step with a 404, so nothing is installed and the rest of the guide cannot be followed.

Maple review

🟡 Confidence 6/10 · needs attention. Held at 6 because a correctness warning is open.
1 warning −1 · 1 note · tests partial −1 · risk low

Adds a Windows Server monitoring guide page with a Collector config, two PowerShell scripts, a powershell highlighter, and index/llms.txt entries. The copy and config check out against the repo's docs; the install script still points at a non-existent MSI.

Findings

🔵 Note · F4 · Takeaways say the built-in tools send no alerts, contradicting the table

correctness · apps/landing/src/pages/guides/windows-server-monitoring.astro:322

The box says the built-in tools "send no alerts", but the Alerts column of the tools table (windows-server-monitoring.astro:108, :115) says a counter alert can start a task and Event Viewer can run one when an event appears; the Microsoft page linked for Performance Monitor is about sending email. Skimmers rule out the built-in tools for the wrong reason.

Match the intro at line 352: say they keep no history across servers and send no alert that reaches you without a scheduled task or script.
