perf(landing): subset Geist and Geist Mono to what the site renders - #1995
The landing site served Geist and Geist Mono from 13 @fontsource-variable faces (full wght 100-900 axis, every Google subset). It now serves subsets cut to what the site renders, produced by a script run by hand (apps/landing/scripts/fonts/subset-fonts.py) whose output is committed. The build does no font work.
extended (behind unicode-range): Latin-1, Latin Extended-A, and the other characters in use
box (Geist Mono only): the four box-drawing characters used in docs tree diagrams
The wght axis starts at 400 (drops the 100 master exactly). Kept features: ccmp kern liga mark mkmk tnum. Characters Geist never drew before (→ ⌘ ✓, CJK) stay on system fonts.
Baseline built from the same commit; same-build noise is 0 px. Chromium full-page pixel diffs are 0 px on all 27 pages checked (code, italics, pricing calculator, components with their own font settings, CJK), at 1x, 2x and 390px wide.
Keeping that required a few things the subsetter does not do by default, all asserted by the script:
keep glyph names (post v2) and the source font's head bounding box: without them Chromium on macOS antialiases small text differently
unencoded X glyph in the extended file, box drawing in a file without X/o: Chromium looks these glyphs up by name and they change antialiasing of every glyph in the file
U+0020 in the non-core files (encoded, not in their unicode-range): WebKit draws a no-break space with the covering face's space glyph
core maps tab, newline and U+200B to the space glyph and U+2011 to the hyphen, matching what browsers drew under the old ranges
bidi_closure off, ?no-inline on font URLs so Vite never inlines the 980 B box file into the global CSS
The script also checks every kept glyph's outline and advance against the source at each weight in use, and shapes every text run in dist/ with HarfBuzz across the file split against the whole font. It exits non-zero on any difference.
Known, not fixed: in WebKit, two system-fallback glyphs (the 🍁 emoji on /, /ja/, /ko/; the 新着 badge on /ja/) differ by up to 45/255 over about 160 px each. The cause is the @font-face declarations (swapping the old font bytes back in still differs; weight descriptor and preload ruled out). Firefox and Windows not tested.
Open decisions
Moving nbsp × ↑ ↓ into the cores costs +336 B per page and stops / and /pricing/ (all locales) from loading an extended file, about 1 MB less across the site, no rendering change.
Trimming the axis top to 750/700 saves about 0.8 KB per page but rounds outlines by up to half a font unit, so it is not applied.
Rerunning
cd apps/landing && bun run build
./scripts/fonts/subset-fonts.py --check # exit 1 = committed fonts are stale
./scripts/fonts/subset-fonts.py # rewrite, then build again
Needs uv; source fonts are pinned by URL and sha256. Rerun when content adds characters outside the core, a weight below 400 or a new OpenType feature appears, or the fonts are bumped. knip.json now ignores the fontsource packages, which src/lib/docs-og.ts still reads by path.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
Landing and documentation pages now preload the primary Geist fonts, helping text appear sooner during page loading.
Font files are tailored to the characters used across the site, reducing unnecessary font data while preserving the existing typography.
Extended character sets continue to load as needed, while commonly used characters are available in the core font files.
Replaces the 13 @fontsource-variable faces with subsets cut by a script run by
hand (apps/landing/scripts/fonts/subset-fonts.py). Per family: a preloaded core
with ASCII and common punctuation, an extended file behind unicode-range with
Latin-1, Latin Extended-A and the other characters in use, and for Geist Mono a
small box-drawing file. The wght axis starts at 400; unused OpenType features
are dropped.
A typical page now downloads 22.6 KB of fonts instead of 52.5 KB, and 510 of
603 pages need nothing beyond the two preloaded cores. Pixel diffs against a
baseline built from the same commit are identical in Chromium on all 27 pages
checked, at 1x, 2x and 390px wide.
The landing site now generates Geist and Geist Mono font subsets and CSS from built-site content. Its layouts preload the core subsets, and global styles import the generated font rules.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Include inline <script>, <style>, and <template> text in the codepoint set.
TextCollector.handle_data drops all text inside SKIP tags. content() then reads only the standalone *.js and *.css files. The docstring says scripts count, but inline scripts and inline styles in the built HTML never reach cps.
Astro can inline small scripts and stylesheets into the page HTML. A character such as • in an inline content: "…" rule is then missing from the ext subset. The browser draws it from a fallback font. Neither the shaping check nor --check reports this.
Collect the skipped text separately. Then feed it through the same scan as the .js and .css files.

Unbraced escapes took up to six hex digits, so \u00e9abc read as U+E9AB and a
value past U+10FFFF crashed chr(). Braced escapes take one to six digits and
out-of-range values are dropped. The committed fonts are unchanged.
🟢 Confidence 10/10 · safe to merge. Delta is a two-line escape-regex fix in a hand-run generator; the rest of the script is unchanged and the committed subsets still match it. no findings · tests not needed · risk low
Since the last review only ESCAPE changed: \uXXXX now takes exactly four hex digits and \u{...} one to six, with codepoints past U+10FFFF dropped, which is what JS itself allows. The collected character set, so the committed subsets, are unchanged.
ESCAPE reads unbraced \u escapes as exactly four digits, braced ones as one to six
content() drops escaped codepoints above U+10FFFF instead of raising in chr()

Check committed font outputs after the landing build.
The landing build consumes committed font subsets and fonts.generated.css, but it does not run subset-fonts.py --check. A content or style change that adds a supported glyph to dist/ can therefore leave the committed subset and unicode-range stale. The browser may fall back to another font for that glyph.

@coderabbitai Won't fix (the outside-diff suggestion to run subset-fonts.py --check in the landing build script). Keeping font work out of the build is deliberate: the script is run by hand and its output committed, and putting it in build would make every deploy depend on uv, Python and fetching the source fonts over the network. A missing glyph falls back to the same system font the site used before this change. --check is documented in the script header for anyone touching content or font settings.
@Makisuo Understood. I withdraw the suggestion to add subset-fonts.py --check to the landing build script.
The script header explicitly documents manual runs and committed output. The script also requires uv and Python, and downloads source fonts when the cache is empty. Keeping that work out of deploy builds is intentional. No change is needed for this suggestion.
