A Hazel connector for @maple/chat-platform, beside Slack and Discord: mention @Maple in a Hazel channel and it answers in a thread, with approvals as buttons.

Depends on MapleTechLabs/hazel#370 (bot-install grants, embed buttons, gateway botUserId/author, thread + users endpoints). Deploy Hazel first.

What's in connectors/hazel/

  • install: sends the admin to https://app.hazel.sh/oauth/bot-install; redeems the one-time code with the bot's token at POST /api/v1/bot-installs/token. The workspace comes from Hazel's answer, never the callback query.
  • ingress: Hazel's bot gateway as a pure socket protocol. IDENTIFY from now on a first connection (never replays the week Hazel retains), RESUME from the last acknowledged offset afterwards, ACK each DISPATCH as it arrives, heartbeat, stop only on a refused token. Maps message.create (own/other bots'/empty messages dropped) and interaction.create.
  • outbound: post/edit over /api/v1, a thread per mention (conversation key = thread id without dashes), history with authors' names and mentions resolved, approvals as embed buttons, @[…] mention markup defused in everything the model writes, 429s waited out (bounded).
  • vendor-isolation.test.ts now guards hazel, with the catalog's pre-existing Hazel alert-webhook entry allowed.

Known limits

  • No identity half: anyone in a linked workspace may ask and approve, as the org-level connector identity (the documented policy for connectors without one). Hazel has no way yet for a person to prove their Hazel account to Maple.
  • No private replies (a whisper mentions the person), no typing indicator, no alert destinations through this connector (alerts stay on the Hazel webhook integration), no uninstall event.
  • Hazel delivers every workspace message, private channels included, to an installed bot; the connector drops what isn't addressed to it.

Setup

Create a public, mentionable Hazel bot with messages:read, messages:write, channels:write; register https://api.maple.dev/oauth/chat/hazel/callback as its install redirect URI; set MAPLE_HAZEL_BOT_TOKEN (chat-bot, api) and MAPLE_HAZEL_BOT_ID (api). One bot per instance (EU needs its own). Details in connectors/hazel/README.md.

Testing

  • chat-platform 312 (27 new: gateway state machine, render, install, outbound against a stubbed client), chat-bot 110, backend integrations 813, web integrations 164. Typecheck clean for chat-platform, chat-bot, api, web, backend.
  • Not run against a live Hazel.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Hazel as a chat integration, with workspace installation and bot configuration.
    • Send and edit messages, open conversation threads, and view conversation history in Hazel.
    • Handle mentions, approval actions, charts, and alerts in Hazel messages.
    • Maintain gateway connections and retry eligible message operations after rate limits.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup and deployment guidance covering installation, message interactions, approval behavior, and current limitations.

A Hazel connector for @maple/chat-platform, beside Slack and Discord:

- install: Hazel's bot-install consent page, redeeming the one-time code with
  the bot's token for the workspace it was issued against;
- ingress: Hazel's bot gateway as a pure socket protocol (HELLO, IDENTIFY or
  RESUME from the last acknowledged offset, DISPATCH batches ACKed as they
  arrive, heartbeats), mapping message.create and interaction.create;
- outbound: post and edit over /api/v1, a thread per mention, history with
  authors' names, approvals as embed buttons, mentions defused.

No identity half yet: anyone in a linked workspace may ask and approve, as
the org-level connector identity. Config: MAPLE_HAZEL_BOT_TOKEN,
MAPLE_HAZEL_BOT_ID. Needs Hazel's bot-install, buttons and gateway changes.

Persist the Hazel offset only after successful event delivery and ACK transmission.

DISPATCH advances state.offset and emits the ACK in the same step as the events. The host currently sends the ACK, persists the offset, and then handles the events. If the socket closes first, sink.send does nothing but the new offset is still persisted. A reconnect can therefore use an offset Hazel never acknowledged and skip that batch.

Handle mapped events before the ACK and state write. Make a closed-socket send fail so the state write does not run when the ACK was not transmitted.

@maple-review-bot F5 is fixed in 35bba6e. Stripping the mention now removes only the spaces beside it, so line breaks and indentation in a pasted log or code block stay. There's a test for it in gateway.test.ts.

@maple-review-bot

F5 can be dismissed — I ran the stripMention at gateway-events.ts:23-31 (ref 35bba6e) against the message shapes from the finding:

"@[userId:bot] what does this mean?\n\n Error: pool exhausted\n"
  -> "what does this mean?\n\n Error: pool exhausted"
"hi @[userId:bot] there" -> "hi there"

Only spaces/tabs beside the mention are trimmed (:27-28) and .trim() at :31 only touches the ends, so interior line breaks and indentation survive. The test at gateway.test.ts:136-146 asserts exactly that, with a double blank line and a four-space-indented error line.

One residual nit, not blocking: parts are rejoined with join(" ") at :30, so a mention on its own line leaves a stray space on the blank line — "line1\n\n@[userId:bot]\n\nline2" becomes "line1\n\n \n\nline2". Newlines and indentation are intact, so the finding as filed is fixed; joining with "" would remove even that artifact.

@maple-review-bot F6 is fixed in a541f93. Pieces are joined with a space only where the mention sat between words. A mention alone on its line now leaves only a blank line, which is dropped, and the next line keeps its indentation: "@[userId:b]\n Error: pool exhausted" becomes " Error: pool exhausted". A test in gateway.test.ts covers that case, mid-sentence mentions, and a leading mention.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge. Held at 8 because earlier reviews of this pull request found 5 defects.
no findings · tests covered · risk medium · 5 defects fixed in earlier rounds

The last commit reworks stripMention so a Hazel mention is removed without collapsing the message's line breaks or the indentation of the line beneath it, with a test for both shapes. The change is safe to merge; the rest of the connector was reviewed at 35bba6e.

  • stripMention joins split parts with a space only between words, never at a line edge
  • Leading blank lines are dropped with trimEnd(), keeping the first content line's indentation

Before merge

Fixed since the last review

  • ✅ F6 · stripMention's .trim() drops the indentation of an indented first line

a541f93 · What was checked, coverage and telemetry details are on the Maple / review check. Reply "won't fix" to dismiss a finding, or mention @maple-review-bot to ask about one.

Reject redirects for the install redemption request.

The Fetch-backed client follows redirects by default. This request carries the bearer token and one-time install code. A 307 or 308 redirect can resend these sensitive values to an unintended target.

Suggested fix
-import { HttpClient, HttpClientRequest } from "effect/http"
+import { FetchHttpClient, HttpClient, HttpClientRequest } from "effect/http"
...
		const response = yield* client
			.execute(
				HttpClientRequest.post(`${API_BASE}/bot-installs/token`, {
					headers: { accept: "application/json", authorization: `Bearer ${token}` },
				}).pipe(HttpClientRequest.bodyJsonUnsafe({ code, redirectUri })),
			)
+			.pipe(Effect.provideService(FetchHttpClient.RequestInit, { redirect: "manual" }))

Add a redirect test that asserts this request does not follow a 307 or 308 response.

Configure the HttpClientRequest.post call to the /bot-installs/token endpoint in
the install flow to reject or avoid following redirects, so the bearer token and
install code are not resent to another target. Add a test confirming that 307
and 308 responses are not followed.

the mention separator whitespace while preserving indentation that follows it.
Add a regression test where an indented code block follows a leading mention and
verify both lines retain their intended indentation.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Preserve indentation after a leading mention.

If a user pastes an indented block after the mention, this removes its first line’s indentation. For example, @[userId:<bot>] first()\n second() becomes first()\n second(), changing the code structure. Preserve indentation beyond the mention separator and add a test for this case.
