Lets a bot that lives outside Hazel (first user: Maple's agent bot) be installed by an org admin and put buttons on its messages, and fixes the bot SDK issues found along the way. Two commits: the feature, then the SDK fixes.
Feature
Bot-install grants. A bot's owner registers install redirect URIs (new field in Edit Application). An org owner/admin approves on the new /oauth/bot-install?bot_id&redirect_uri&state page; Hazel installs the bot and redirects with a one-time code (org store bot_install_grants, 10 min, single use, bound to bot + redirect URI). The bot redeems it with its own token: POST /api/v1/bot-installs/token → org id and name.
Embed buttons.MessageEmbed.actions (≤5). Clicking calls message.interact; only the bot that posted the message gets an interaction.create gateway event (with the clicker's id and name). Rendered in the message list and threads.
Bot API:POST /api/v1/channels/:id/threads (returns the message's existing thread if any), GET /api/v1/organizations/:id/users?ids=.
Gateway: READY carries botId/botUserId; message.* events carry author (displayName, isBot), read from the directory once per message, only in channels with bots.
Migrations:bots.installRedirectUris (directory + org), bot_install_grants (org). The node all-stores test DB now skips an ADD COLUMN a sibling store already applied (first ALTER on a shared table).
SDK fixes
channel.createThread never routed for bots: it required organizationId, which bots don't have and the SDK never sent. It now routes by the message's channel. Fixes hazel-bot and t3code-bot thread creation without an SDK upgrade.
A thread created without an id gets one derived from the message, so retries/racing bots don't open duplicates.
The SDK decoded a DISPATCH frame all-or-nothing: one unknown event closed the socket and the same batch was redelivered forever. It now skips (logs, acks) events it can't read.
createThread(messageId, channelId, organizationId?); docs no longer call channelId unused.
Docs/examples: @hazel-chat/bot-sdk, gateway port 3004.
/api/v1 now enforces a bot's declared scopes like RPC does (bots with no scopes recorded keep member scopes). Behavior change: a bot using the HTTP API with narrower declared scopes than a member's will now be refused those calls.
Testing
backend 318, bot-gateway 37, bot-sdk 29, web 1595, db + domain 59 — all passing; repo typecheck 20/20.
New: install grant end to end (registered redirect, admin-only, single use, expiry, wrong bot/redirect), button press reaches only the posting bot, thread endpoint idempotent, users lookup, declared scopes on HTTP, createThread routed by channel and idempotent without an id, SDK skips unreadable events and still acks, consent page and chat button scene tests.
A bot that lives in another service (Maple's agent) can now be installed the
way a chat platform installs an app, and can put buttons on its messages:
- Bot-install grants: a bot's owner registers install redirect URIs; an org
admin approves on /oauth/bot-install, Hazel installs the bot and hands the
redirect a one-time code (org store, 10 min, single use) that the bot
redeems with its own token at POST /api/v1/bot-installs/token.
- Embed actions (up to 5 buttons). message.interact sends the bot that
posted the message an interaction.create gateway event.
- Bot API: POST /api/v1/channels/:id/threads and
GET /api/v1/organizations/:id/users. The HTTP API now holds a bot to its
declared scopes, as RPC does (bots with none recorded keep member scopes).
- Gateway: READY names the bot and its user; message events name their
author (one directory read per message, only where a channel has bots).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- channel.createThread routes by the message's channel when no
organizationId is given: bots have no active org and the SDK never sent
one, so every bot's createThread failed to route.
- A thread created without an id gets one derived from its message, so a
retried or racing create answers with the same thread instead of a second.
- The SDK reads each gateway event on its own and skips (and still
acknowledges) one it cannot decode. Before, one unknown event failed the
whole frame and the batch was redelivered forever.
- createThread takes the organization when the bot knows it; its docs no
longer call the required channelId unused.
- Docs and examples: @hazel-chat/bot-sdk, gateway port 3004.

- The author name on message events, the users lookup and an interaction's

F3 (authorOf returns deleted users): fixed in 310d54a. The lookup filters deletedAt IS NULL, so a deleted author is absent, as BotGatewayMessageAuthor documents.
F4 (READY botId/botUserId as plain strings): won't fix. They are wire values written by the gateway Worker, which takes them from its handshake headers and does not depend on @hazel/schema. Branding them there would mean an unchecked cast. Clients decode them as strings, which is what they compare against @[userId:…] markup.
Migration: safe. 0002_bot_install_oauth adds one nullable column to bots (no default needed, no rewrite); the org store's migration adds that column and a new table. Code still on the old version never reads either.

F3 — dismissed. At head, apps/backend/src/worker/objects/effects/bot-gateway-effects.ts:47-62 reads the author with .where(($) => [$.id.eq(userId), $.deletedAt.isNull()]), and deletedAt is a real column on users (packages/db/src/tables/users.ts:23), so a soft-deleted author yields None → Option.getOrUndefined at line 71 → the envelope's author is absent, which is exactly what BotGatewayMessageAuthor documents (packages/domain/src/bot-gateway.ts:35-44, author: Schema.optionalKey(BotGatewayMessageAuthor) on all three message envelopes). Matches the schema.
F4 — withdrawn. I accept the reasoning; the construction site backs it up. apps/bot-gateway/src/gateway/object-live.ts:213-220 builds READY under satisfies typeof BotGatewayReadyFrame.Type straight from handshake.botId / handshake.botUserId, and decodeHandshake (handshake.ts:55-60) takes those from headers, i.e. string. apps/bot-gateway/package.json has no @hazel/schema dependency, and nothing consumes the field as a branded id — BotAuthContext.botId in libs/bot-sdk/src/auth.ts:14 is string too. Branding the frame would just move an as BotId into line 218, so plain strings are the honest type here. If it ever matters, the cheap fix is a Schema.decodeUnknownSync(BotId) once at the socket boundary rather than a cast — not needed now.
Migration — agreed.migrations.generated.ts has directory 0002_bot_install_oauth and org 0004_bot_install_oauth; the D1 file is one nullable ADD COLUMN with no default (packages/db/src/tables/bots.ts:24 declares SQLite.nullable(jsonb<string[]>()), no default), so the org/directory store gets a metadata-only column add and a new table, and schema-ddl.test.ts:59-64 keeps the migrations/directory folder byte-identical to the generated statements. The withoutAppliedColumns helper in node.ts:18-32 is consistent with that story: it only exists because local node SQLite hosts every store in one database, where both stores apply the same bots column add.
🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge. The deleted-author filter is correct but unpinned by a test, and F4 (unbranded READY ids) is still unfixed at this head. 1 warning −1 · 1 note · tests partial −1 · risk medium · 3 defects fixed in earlier rounds
The only change since f0ec237 is authorOf filtering deletedAt IS NULL, which makes a deleted author absent as BotGatewayMessageAuthor documents — that closes F3. F4 is unchanged at this head. Safe to merge once the new branch has a test.
authorOf skips soft-deleted users, so a deleted author yields no author on the message event
The added deletedAt.isNull() clause is the whole fix, but no test deletes a user before publishing a message.create; the existing message-event test only asserts the author of a live bot user (apps/backend/src/routes/object-routes.test.ts:356). Dropping the clause again would give bots a deleted member's name and nothing would fail.
In the message-event test, set the author's `deletedAt` in the directory row before publishing and assert the envelope carries no `author` key.

Deleted-author branch in `authorOf` is not tested
The added `deletedAt.isNull()` clause is the whole fix, but no test deletes a user before publishing a `message.create`; the existing message-event test only asserts the author of a live bot user (`apps/backend/src/routes/object-routes.test.ts:356`). Dropping the clause again would give bots a deleted member's name and nothing would fail.
Suggested fix: In the message-event test, set the author's `deletedAt` in the directory row before publishing and assert the envelope carries no `author` key.

… offer sign-in; SDK logs through the bot
- GET /api/v1/organizations/:id/users checks each id on its own.
- The install page shows "Sign in to continue" when the lookup failed for want of a session.
- The SDK logs skipped gateway events inside the dispatch Effect, so the bot's logger sees them.

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge. Held at 8 because earlier reviews of this pull request found 3 defects. 1 note · tests covered · 3 defects fixed in earlier rounds
Follow-up fixes on the bot-install PR: a malformed user id no longer voids the whole lookup, message events carry no author once that user is deleted, and a signed-out visitor gets a sign-in button instead of a dead retry. The changes read clean. The McpQueryError issues whose frames point at page/registry.ts are not addressed — that diff only registers the new route.

@maple-review-bot F4: won't fix. As agreed above, the READY ids are plain strings the gateway Worker reads from its handshake headers, and branding them would only add a cast there.
Checked, and you're right — F4 can be dismissed. Both values are produced at one site from unvalidated header strings (object-live.ts:218-219, handshake.ts:51-60), so a branded field would need a cast (or a decode that can fail) there, and the only decoder in the repo, LenientServerFrame (libs/bot-sdk/src/hazel-bot-sdk.ts:121-129), never reads either field: the READY case at :821 only takes sessionId and resumed, and the SDK's own identity comes from authContext (:499-504). So branding today would buy no typed consumer, just a cast over the same header string.
The one thing I'd note for later, not as a finding: if these ids ever get consumed, the cast belongs once in decodeHandshake (branding Handshake.botId/botUserId) rather than repeated at each frame construction.

Expose message author metadata to handlers.

Expose message author metadata to handlers.
The new message envelope carries author, but the SDK passes only envelope.payload to message handlers. Bots using onMessage cannot access the author’s display name or bot status from the event and must perform another lookup. Pass the metadata through a backward-compatible handler context, including for update and delete events. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Dispatch button interactions to SDK handlers.
The gateway sends interaction.create when a user presses a bot’s button. The envelope decodes successfully, but this switch has no interaction case, so the SDK acknowledges the event without delivering it to the bot. Add an interaction handler registration and dispatch path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @libs/bot-sdk/src/hazel-bot-sdk.ts at line 542:
Add interaction handler registration and an interaction.create dispatch case in
the switch on envelope.eventType, following the existing event-handler patterns
so decoded button interactions are delivered to the bot instead of only
acknowledged.
Return the thread’s actual parent channel from the forwarded response.
116-116: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Return the thread’s actual parent channel from the forwarded response.
When channel.createThread receives a thread ID, it returns that thread row. The route then sets parentChannelId to the requested thread ID instead of the thread’s actual parent channel. Use response.data.parentChannelId here, with a non-null narrowing because ThreadResponse requires a ChannelId.
The in-thread request does not take the earlier existing-thread shortcut. MessageThreadCall returns the message’s threadChannelId, and in-thread messages have this field set to null.

Review comment at @apps/backend/src/routes/api-v1/bots.http.ts at line 116:
Update the forwarded thread response mapping to set parentChannelId from
response.data.parentChannelId rather than params.channelId, and narrow the
response value as needed to satisfy the required ChannelId type.
