fix: adopt inline metadata during document hydration - #94
React Router's production SSR can leave module-preload links in the body. Hydration previously looked only in the head, then mistook a leftover link for the following script and rebuilt the body. Adopt those existing nodes so the original interactive DOM survives, preserving main's rollback-aware claim tracking.
Share the metadata scan and simplify recovery helpers to offset the fix's cost. Against 0.2.2, full/default published client bundles shrink by 212 minified bytes and 17–34 gzip bytes. The full React 19 Brotli bundle grows by an explicitly approved 16 bytes; the other client totals shrink under Brotli. The allowance is restricted to that exact baseline, profile, entry and metric. All fixed bundle budgets remain unchanged.
Validation
2,002 tests passed, 91 skipped; type checks, build verification and original size limits pass on Node 24.22.0.
All 36 React 18/19 compatibility size comparisons pass with the scoped 16-byte allowance.
React Router 8.5.0 passes development and production with native React and Redact, including server DOM identity, state, form actions, navigation and history.
Regression test and patch changeset included.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed hydration of server-rendered metadata placed in the document body. Existing buttons, preload links, and scripts are now preserved during hydration instead of being replaced, avoiding unnecessary DOM changes and recoverable hydration errors. Subsequent renders also retain the existing button and links.

Walkthrough
Hydration now searches for eligible metadata outside the cursor parent and adjusts host recovery selection. A regression test and benchmark records cover metadata emitted in the document body. Compatibility-size checks include a scoped Brotli allowance.

Summary
Metadata lookup and adoption packages/redact/src/dom/features/hydration/full.ts
A standalone lookup scans a metadata parent and optional fallback for an unclaimed matching element. Document-level adoption uses that lookup, and candidate validation checks localName.
Safe host selection rejects document-shell elements. Host-parent checks and recovery-container selection are handled directly in their callers.
Regression test and recorded results tests/document-hydration.test.tsx, benchmarks/results/hydration-inline-metadata/before/*, benchmarks/results/hydration-inline-metadata/after/*, .changeset/hydration-inline-metadata.md, benchmarks/results/hydration-inline-metadata/README.md
The test checks that hydration and rerendering retain existing nodes. Benchmark records include a failing baseline and passing runs. The changeset and README describe the fix and validation.
Compatibility size allowance and results scripts/compatibility-size-budget.mjs, tests/compatibility-size-budget.test.ts, benchmarks/results/hydration-inline-metadata/react-compatibility-size.txt, benchmarks/results/hydration-inline-metadata/README.md
The size check grants a 16-byte Brotli allowance for one approved base and comparison. Tests check that other metrics, targets, profiles, and bases receive no allowance. Recorded results report compatibility-size measurements.

Explanation
The title "fix: adopt inline metadata during document hydration" matches the main change. The objectives describe adopting module-preload links left in the body by React Router production SSR during hydration, and the raw summary shows adoptHostDom and findMetadata changes plus a body-metadata hydration test. The title is specific and concise, and it names the fix and its scope.

Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Keep inline matching inside the Suspense boundary.
cursor.head() scans from the parent’s first child and ignores the cursor’s end marker. If a pending boundary contains an unclaimed link with the same signature, a later boundary can claim that link instead of its own. A differing non-key attribute then triggers recovery and replaces the later boundary’s server DOM. Limit the inline scan to the cursor’s boundary range. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
