fix(stats): redirect comparison links before rendering - #1435
Comparison links currently return a loading page with comparison metadata, then redirect after hydration. Move that existing redirect to beforeLoad so the server sends users straight to the chart with their packages and display controls preserved. Strip default comparison parameters to avoid an extra normalization hop, and return 404 for empty, malformed, or oversized combinations instead of silently dropping packages.
This continues #1152 after #1434. Comparison paths remain shareable entry points to the main chart, whose canonical is /stats/npm; they no longer pretend to be separate rendered comparison pages. This does not close the broader issue.
Validation: full pnpm test; route-guard regression tests for single, multiple, scoped and legacy-scoped names, display controls, and invalid combinations. Local application HTTP checks confirmed one redirect to 200 for valid paths and direct 404s for malformed paths and a 33-package comparison.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Navigation
Valid npm comparison links now redirect to the npm statistics page, preserving selected packages and comparison settings.
Comparisons with invalid package names, malformed selections, or more than 32 packages show a not-found page.
Tests
Added coverage for redirects and preserved settings across ordinary, scoped, and multi-package comparisons, as well as invalid and over-limit selections.
Merging this PR will not cause a version bump for any packages. If these changes should not result in a new version, you're good to go. If these changes should result in a version bump, you need to add a changeset.
The NPM comparison route validates search parameters and package paths before redirecting valid comparisons to /stats/npm. The redirect preserves validated search values and adds parsed package groups. Tests cover valid paths and invalid comparisons.

Summary
Validate and redirect comparison paths src/routes/stats/npm/$packages.tsx, tests/npm-comparison-redirect.test.ts
The route exports comparisonSearchSchema and redirects valid comparison paths from beforeLoad to /stats/npm with search values and package groups. Invalid paths return not found. Tests cover valid and invalid cases.
TanStack/tanstack.com#1434: Defines search parameters for /stats/npm, which the comparison redirect preserves.

Comparison redirects appear mergeable. A route-level test would make regressions in the redirect wiring easier to catch.

Exercise the route entrypoint in a regression test.
tests/npm-comparison-redirect.test.ts calls redirectNpmComparison directly. These tests can pass if /stats/npm/$packages stops wiring that function as beforeLoad, so they do not detect loss of the server-side redirect. The route-level validation test only checks search parsing. Add a router-level test that enters /stats/npm/<comparison> and asserts the redirect occurs before the route renders.

comparisons. Reuse the existing validation symbol from the schemas module and
preserve the current count checks and redirect behavior for valid names.

Thanks, the package-name length mismatch is fixed using the chart's existing validator.
AI review notes:
The new regression failed before the fix because a 215-character name redirected instead of returning not found. It now passes, with coverage for valid 214-character and invalid 215-character names, both plain and scoped.
The actual local application's HTTP route was also exercised: valid boundary names returned 307, overlong names returned 404, and a two-package comparison preserved its height setting. These HTTP checks verify the route wiring; the committed unit tests exercise the guard directly.
Full pnpm test and normal commit hooks passed. Production verification is still pending.
Cover the route registration, not only the redirect helper.
runBeforeLoad calls redirectNpmComparison directly, so these tests still pass if /stats/npm/$packages removes or miswires Route.options.beforeLoad. Add a route-level assertion that invokes Route.options.beforeLoad and checks the redirect. This improves regression coverage; it does not indicate that the current route wiring fails.
