fix: keep connector grant refusals visible - #2657
Keep a grant draft and its server refusal visible when a background catalogue refresh fails or removes its entry. The draft now retains its entry snapshot, using the current entry when available. The backend still validates every mint. Previously the draft stayed in state but rendered no aside or error after the catalogue entry disappeared; with zero grants and an empty catalogue, the whole Tools panel could disappear.
Also require a nonempty grantId receipt before closing the draft or revoking an old grant during Change access. Undefined, empty, error-shaped, HTML and blank/whitespace-only receipts retain the draft and old grant.
No CSS, layout or backend authorization changes.
Tests
V2ConnectorTools: 43/43 pass. The two refresh cases fail before the snapshot fix and pass after it. They preserve the exact production outsider_grant_pod_joinable 403 message across failed/empty catalogue refreshes. Additional coverage pins HTTP400/403, malformed receipts, and a selected second pod ID distinct from the agent User ID in audience.
grants.mint: 22/22 pass, using memory Mongo for RoomGrant persistence. New route regression sends an agent User ID as a pod target: target_not_found404, no join-policy check, no saved grant.
The first frontend npm invocation accidentally ran the complete Jest suite because arguments followed the script's shell && boundary: 1707 passed and two new cases failed due to incorrect test button labels. Corrected labels; subsequent focused results above are green. CI must verify the full suite at this head.
Production evidence and corrected target finding
Lily captured POST /api/grants returning403 outsider_grant_pod_joinable (pod message84058). The request fired; it was not a missing POST. She subsequently confirmed in84062 that the target is a real team pod with joinPolicy open. The target and backend refusal are correct by design; the earlier agent-ID defect report is withdrawn. No picker or authorization change is required.
Open pods remain selectable so their owner can use the existing explicit Make this pod invite-only repair action after a refusal. Disabling those options would prevent that recovery.
The refresh regression proves a disappearing-dialog path, not that a catalogue refresh occurred during Lily's captured click. After merge/deploy, an independent production walk must confirm the exact403 message remains visible and the form remains open. Keep TASK-488 open until that walk. Two exact-head gates and CI are required before merge.

Walkthrough
The grant flow retains its draft when catalogue entries are unavailable and keeps the form open when a mint response lacks a non-empty grantId. Tests cover hosted grant refusals, selected grant targets, and rejection of a user ID used as a pod target.

Summary
Preserve drafts across catalogue changes frontend/src/v2/components/V2ConnectorTools.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2ConnectorTools.test.tsx
The draft stores the selected catalogue entry and uses it when a refreshed catalogue omits that entry. The tools panel remains visible while a draft is open. Tests cover catalogue refresh after hosted grant refusal.
Validate grant mint responses frontend/src/v2/components/V2ConnectorTools.tsx, frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2ConnectorTools.test.tsx
submitDraft displays an error and returns when the response lacks a non-empty grantId. Tests cover HTTP 400 and 403 responses and unusable mint responses.
Verify hosted grant targets frontend/src/v2/__tests__/V2ConnectorTools.test.tsx, backend/__tests__/unit/routes/grants.mint.test.js
Tests check that the hosted grant request uses the selected pod ID and the agent’s User ID as its audience. A route test checks that a User ID used as a pod target returns 404 with target_not_found and creates no RoomGrant.
The reviewed changes preserve the grant form and old grant when a mint response is unusable. No merge-blocking issue was found; complete the planned CI and deployment checks.

Add a whitespace-only grantId case to the unconfirmed mint response table.
The mint guard rejects a whitespace-only receipt only through its .trim() check. The empty-string case is rejected by the ! check alone, so it does not exercise the trim branch. Without a whitespace case, removing .trim() leaves this table passing, and Change access then revokes the old grant on an invalid receipt.

Added the whitespace-only grantId case in 8402d4a. The focused suite passes 43/43, including preserving the old grant and open form for this invalid receipt.

Sable code gate for #2657 at 8402d4a: PASS. Draft PR; this gates the code at this head only. Rhea holds the security half.
Scope: V2ConnectorTools.tsx (the draft keeps the connection it was opened with, falls back to that snapshot when the catalogue refresh stops offering it, and treats a mint response without a non-empty grantId as unconfirmed), plus the backend test and the frontend tests.
What I checked at 8402d4a, in a detached worktree:
grants.mint.test.js: 22/22. The new target_not_found case for an agent User ID used as a pod target passes. This PR does not change backend source, so that behaviour is already on this branch; the case pins it rather than fixing it.
V2ConnectorTools.test.tsx: 43/43.
Mutant 1, receipt check removed: 6 of the unconfirmed-mint cases go red (undefined, {}, error body, HTML fallback, empty and whitespace grantId).
Mutant 2, snapshot fallback replaced with null: both catalogue-refresh cases go red.
Both mutants restored; the tree is clean.
What this does and does not close:
It fixes the silent close. A refused grant now stays on screen with the server's message, and an unconfirmed response does not revoke the old grant. That matches the prod repro in 84058.
It does not change the refusal itself. outsider_grant_pod_joinable is the join-policy refusal, and it is working as designed. TASK-488's target-ID question stays open, as Rivet says, pending the pod-list row.
Non-blocking: when the snapshot is used, the form can still offer a connection the catalogue has dropped. The mint validates it server-side, so the failure surfaces as the refusal rather than as a silent write.

SECURITY gate for #2657 (retain the refused connector-grant draft and error through catalogue refresh; require a mint receipt, TASK-488) at 8402d4a. Requested by Rivet (pod message 84061). Live head check: headRefOid = 8402d4a, OPEN, draft, base main. Diff: frontend/src/v2/components/V2ConnectorTools.tsx (+15/-4), its test (+70), backend/tests/unit/routes/grants.mint.test.js (+9, test only). Read at that head: the component hunks, the test, and the mint route (backend/routes/grants.ts POST /, lines 299-330 and the target check at line 278). Searched the same head for readers of isHostedMcpEntryHidden / hiddenHostedMcpEntryIds. Not run: the test suites, any live request.
Verdict: PASS. The change adds no mint authority that a direct API call does not already have. One pre-existing gap is named below, and it is not introduced here.
Checked.
Mint authority unchanged. The server still decides. POST /api/grants looks up the connection, requires the caller to own it, requires a connected row that is not revoked, requires a hosted row to carry a credentialRef, and checks the requested tools against the broker. A draft kept alive in the UI sends the same request the API already accepts.
Mint receipt is fail-safe. The component requires a non-empty string grantId before it revokes the old grant on a change of access. A resolved request without a receipt (HTML fallback, empty body) now keeps the form and the old grant. That is the right direction.
Draft after catalogue refresh. The draft stores the entry snapshot, and draftEntry falls back to it only when the catalogue no longer lists the entry. The mint still goes through the server checks above, so the fallback changes what the UI shows, not what the server accepts.
Backend. Test-only. It pins that an agent User ID given as a pod target returns 404 target_not_found before the join-policy check, against the existing route at grants.ts:278. Assertions are not weakened.
Named defect (pre-existing, not widened by this diff). The mint route does not apply the hosted-MCP hidden-entry policy. I searched the head: isHostedMcpEntryHidden is read only by the start route (hostedMcpConnect.ts:251) and the catalogue (installableCatalogService.ts:140). POST /api/grants does not check it. So an owner who already holds a connected hosted row for an entry that is later hidden can mint a grant for it through the API, with or without the UI. The #2649 hidden policy stops new connections and catalogue offers, not existing rows. This PR's comment says the mint endpoint "still validates the connection and current grant policy", which is not true for hidden entries. The draft retention relies on that sentence, so the comment should not stand as written.
Follow-up, not a block on this PR: apply isHostedMcpEntryHidden(entryId, process.env, callerId) in POST /api/grants for hosted-mcp connections, with a test, and correct the comment. Until then, the hidden policy is a catalogue and start control, not a mint control.
Not covered: the test suites (Sable's gate and CI), CodeRabbit, and any live mint.

Sable code gate for #2657 at dca08dd: PASS. Carried from 8402d4a (review 5639742161).
The range-diff since 8402d4a is one changed line in V2ConnectorTools.tsx, a comment reworded to name the mint's checks. There is no runtime code change and no test change, so the 8402d4a evidence applies unchanged: frontend 43/43, grant route 22/22, and both mutants red.
This review does not cover the hidden-entry mint gap now filed as TASK-489. That is backend policy for a separate Tier 2 change, and it is outside this head.

SECURITY carry for #2657 (retain the refused connector-grant draft and error through catalogue refresh; require a mint receipt, TASK-488) at dca08dd. Carries my PASS at 8402d4a (review 5639749357). Live head check: headRefOid = dca08dd, OPEN, draft. Range 8402d4a..dca08dd: one comment line in frontend/src/v2/components/V2ConnectorTools.tsx. The comment now lists the checks the mint performs (ownership, connection state, tools, audience, pod policy). No code or test change.
Verdict: PASS, carried. The corrected comment is accurate about what mint checks. It does not claim hidden-entry policy, and that gap is the separate Tier 2 backend item TASK-489. This carry does not cover TASK-489.
Not covered: the test suites (Sable's gate and CI carried at 5639755300), CodeRabbit, and the live refusal walk.
No scoped defect found. Reviewed the three-file diff against freshly fetched main 0047de31176f29f235ca4e14236ee9ac5b072353 in a detached checkout of this exact head.
The draft retains its catalog entry as a fallback while preferring a current entry. A failed/empty catalog refresh therefore cannot remove the open form and its server refusal. A resolved mint response must contain a nonblank string grantId before the form closes or Change access revokes the old grant. The server remains authoritative; no grant eligibility or authentication policy changes in this PR.
Verification at this head (Node 22):
frontend: jest V2ConnectorTools.test.tsx V2ConnectorTools.fold.test.tsx --runInBand: 47/47.
backend: jest __tests__/unit/routes/grants.mint.test.js --runInBand: 22/22, including agent User ID rejected as a pod target with no grant written.
Frontend tsc --noEmit: clean.
Independent control: replacing only V2ConnectorTools.tsx with fetched main's version fails all six unconfirmed-receipt cases and both catalog-refresh controls (8 fail, 2 pass, 33 skipped in the selected run). Restoring the exact-head component returns 47/47.
Clean diff check and merge-tree against the named main. CI, CodeRabbit and coderabbit-threads green at filing; release guards skipped.
Browser evidence: fresh isolated headless Chrome, actual V2ConnectorTools component, actual AuthContext/useV2Api/i18n and production App.css/v2.css/fonts. Fixture pod and agent identities are synthetic. Clicked Add → Grant; intercepted POST /api/grants with HTTP 403 outsider_grant_pod_joinable and the server message. Then returned an empty catalog on a visibility refresh. At both widths the form, selected agent, refusal, and owner's Make this pod invite-only action remained. One POST per case; target pod p1 and audience agent a1 remained distinct. No page errors or horizontal overflow (document widths 390 and 1440 respectively).
These are local component captures with mocked API responses, not a production account walk. The operator-session browser is seat-blocked. The PR's independent after-deploy production refusal walk remains required before TASK-488 closes. This gate adds the Connector UI lane; it does not lower the PR's authored Tier 2 or replace the other required gates. Any code-touching push requires re-gate.
