feat(outbound): one product-wide SSRF setting for caller-supplied URLs - #1327
Merged
Merged
Conversation
Add a new top-level `outbound.ssrf_protection` block (`enabled`, default true; `allowed_hosts`, default []) that governs every URL an API caller supplies and the gateway fetches - today only the media download. `upstream.media_fetch.allowed_hosts` is removed (unreleased). `enabled: false` drops the address check entirely. Either way the download now behaves like the other upstream calls: it honours HTTP(S)_PROXY / ALL_PROXY / NO_PROXY, and certificate verification follows upstream.tls (ca_file and verify), without the client identity. With protection on, a direct connection keeps DNS pinning; a URL a proxy takes is resolved and every address checked before it is handed to the proxy. The 400 for a blocked host now names outbound.ssrf_protection.allowed_hosts and outbound.ssrf_protection.enabled.

…ed_hosts The gateway moved the media download's allow-list to a product-wide outbound.ssrf_protection block (enabled, allowed_hosts) in api7/aisix#1327.
…lver A proxy whose own host failed to resolve was reported to the caller as their media URL not resolving; only the pinned route needs its own resolver.

Split the unchecked route into Direct (own uncached resolver, no proxy) and Proxied (shared resolver, which then only resolves the proxy host), and let unit tests ignore environment proxies.
An SIIT address such as ::ffff:0:7f00:1 fell through to the public default, so a caller-supplied URL could reach loopback or link-local through it. Judge it by the IPv4 it embeds, matching NAT64 and 6to4 and the control plane's shared guard.

This replaces the media-download-only allow-list from #1314 with one product-wide SSRF setting that can also be turned off, and makes the download behave like any other upstream request.
New top-level startup config block:
Env vars:
AISIX_OUTBOUND__SSRF_PROTECTION__ENABLED,AISIX_OUTBOUND__SSRF_PROTECTION__ALLOWED_HOSTS(comma-separated). It governs every URL supplied by an API caller that the gateway fetches. Today that is only the media download (upstream.media_fetch). URLs that operators configure (providerapi_base, guardrail endpoints, MCP, A2A, JWKS, exporters) are not affected.upstream.media_fetch.allowed_hostsis removed outright. It was never released, so there's no alias or tombstone.upstream.media_fetch.enabledandmax_bytesare unchanged. What changes in the download:
enabled: falseturns the address check off completely: no blocklist and no DNS pinning, andallowed_hostsis ignored. The redirect cap (10), size cap, request-body budget, retries and timeout budget still apply in both modes.HTTPS_PROXY/HTTP_PROXY/ALL_PROXY/NO_PROXYthe same way the provider clients do. The forcedno_proxy()is gone. Whether a proxy takes a URL is decided by the same matcher reqwest uses internally (hyper_util'sMatcher::from_system), so the check and the client can't disagree.upstream.tls(ca_fileand now alsoverify: false). The download still never presents the upstream mTLS client identity. The address classification, the allow-list parsing and the resolver now live in a new
aisix_gateway::ssrfmodule, so the next caller-URL fetcher reuses them instead of copying media_fetch.config.example.yaml/config.managed.yamldocument the new block, the proxy/TLS behaviour, and the fake-ip / transparent-proxy case: public names that resolve into 198.18.0.0/15 are blocked, so list them inallowed_hostsor turn the check off.config.reference.jsonis regenerated. The paired chart change is api7/api7-helm-chart#409.Upgrade impact: none for released versions, because
media_fetchitself is unreleased. A config that setupstream.media_fetch.allowed_hostson a main build or a v1.7.0 release candidate must move it tooutbound.ssrf_protection.allowed_hosts, because the old key now fails the boot as an unknown field.Tests: the existing media e2e suites move to the new key and assert the new hint. New e2e cases cover a loopback URL (direct and via redirect) fetched with
enabled: false, an allow-listedhttp://host fetched throughHTTP_PROXY, anhttps://host tunnelled throughHTTPS_PROXYwithupstream.tls.verify: falseagainst a self-signed cert, a non-allow-listed name refused before the proxy sees anything, and the same host passing through the proxy with protection off. Unit tests moved with the classification intossrf.rs, plus a disabled-mode/redirect-cap case inmedia_fetch.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
