"The Playa dreams it. We build it. And nobody in those seats ever needs to know it's held up with string."
-- Rook RagRavel

The circus of all worlds, and the beating, boisterous heart of the SunSpun Sands. Theatrical troupes, circus acts, and storytellers from across every time and place Threadbare remembers converge here, pitching tents that never quite match the size or shape they were the night before.

There is no single show; the Playa reinvents itself nightly, drawing its acts from whichever stories most need telling to stay alive. Threadlings say a StoryWeaver who is lost - truly lost, in Memory or Imagination or Spirit - need only find their way to the Performance Playa, where somewhere, in some tent, someone is telling the very story they need to hear.

A City of Stages

The Playa is not one show but a whole city of them. Every art of performance that Threadbare remembers has a home here: drama and comedy, opera and song, dance, puppetry, shadow play, storytelling, magic and acrobatics, from every time and every tradition.

From the seats, it is the most opulent spectacle in Threadbare. Theatres rise out of the dunes like palaces. Chandeliers blaze over velvet seating for a thousand. Silk banners the length of streets snap in the desert wind, and fountains dance in time to the band. At night, the whole Playa glows so brightly that travellers crossing the SunSpun Sands can steer by it from three days away.

Held Up With String

Up close, the Playa is almost entirely made of things the rest of the world threw away.

The velvet is old theatre curtains, turned inside out. The gold is button thread, painstakingly re-wound. The chandeliers are lost buttons, spoons and broken spectacles, strung on fishing line and lit from behind. The grand arches are scaffolding wrapped in the outgrown coats of half of Frays End.

None of it should work. All of it does, because of Rook RagRavel, His Tattered Majesty, the Rag King of the Performance Playa, and his ragtag company of castoffs, the Tattered Troupe, who wear that name as a badge of honour. Nobody decides what the Playa will be each night. The Playa decides for itself, in If's honour. What Rook decides is that it will be ready. Whatever the Playa dreams up, however impossible, the Troupe rigs it, lights it, and holds it together until the last bow, and not a single member of the audience ever sees the seams.

The Venues

Most of the Playa's tents appear for a single night and are gone by morning. But some venues return again and again, in a different place and a slightly different shape each time, and the Playa's regulars know them by name.

  • The Canopy of Curiosity - The Playa's great big top, and its fixed heart. The one tent on the Playa that never changes shape, where stories from every culture of every world are performed. See The Canopy of Curiosity.
  • The Velvet Proscenium - The grandest theatre on the Playa, all gilt balconies and crimson velvet, where plays and operas from every age are staged. Its curtain is said to be the largest single piece of cloth in Threadbare after the Great Weave itself. It is, in fact, four hundred old curtains, very carefully stitched.
  • The Shadow Loom - A hall of lit screens of stretched linen, where shadow plays and silhouette tales are performed. Audiences sit on cushions in the dark, and the stories are told entirely in light and outline.
  • The Marionette Mile - A winding lane of puppet stages, from tabletop shows to marionettes taller than a house. Every performer here works a thread, and the Threadlings of the Playa consider it the most honest art of all.
  • The Pleated Pavilion - An open-sided pavilion of folded silk, given over to dance. Its pleated walls open and close in time with the music, so that the building itself seems to dance.
  • The Tassel Hall - A rowdy, glittering variety hall of comedians, magicians, jugglers and song-and-dance acts, with a new bill every night and an audience that joins in whether invited or not.
  • The Tale Hearths - Rings of cushions around low fires on the quieter edge of the Playa, where storytellers tell the old tales in the old way: no stage, no costume, only a voice. Anyone may sit, and anyone may tell.
  • The Sunfold Amphitheatre - A great open-air bowl cut into a dune, used for the Playa's largest spectacles: pageants, epics, and the grand processions that open its festival nights.
  • The Motley Mile - The Playa's main avenue, crowded day and night with street performers, stilt-walkers, ribbon-dancers, living statues and musicians. Every other venue on the Playa can be reached from it, and every visitor walks it first.
  • The Rag Yards - Behind the scenes, and never on any map, the sprawling workshops where the Tattered Troupe build every set, costume and chandelier on the Playa from salvaged scraps.

The Playa and its Neighbours

The Playa is the loudest of the SunSpun Sands' gathering places, but not the only one. Songs sung in reverence belong to the Song Sanctuaries and the Order of the Humming Hem, and the tales of the Diwan Dunes have their own home nearby. Performers from both are honoured guests on the Playa's stages, but the Playa does not replace them.

Narrative Function

  • A place to be found. The Playa is where a StoryWeaver who has lost their way can always find the story they need. It is a natural place for encounters, side quests and allies.
  • The Canopy and the StoryQuests. The Playa itself is not a home for the StoryQuests, and its other venues do not host them. Only The Canopy of Curiosity, at the Playa's heart, holds StoryQuests, as a second home alongside The Everlasting Library in Frays End.
  • A candidate region for the Spirit arc. The Playa is one of the candidate regions for the recovery of Ever's Shuttle in Act Two of the Threadbare Plot.

Notes for Contributors

  • Respect every tradition. The Playa draws performance from every culture. Present each art form with care, as its own tradition, and never as exotic, strange or a novelty. See Content Guidelines.
  • Opulent from the front, patched from behind. Every venue should look breathtaking from the audience, and reveal salvage, string and patchwork backstage. That contrast is the Playa's signature.
  • New venues are welcome. A new venue should follow the pattern of the others: a performance art at its heart, a name drawn from fabric or story, and a small bit of character that makes it feel like part of the Playa.
