Summary

The Great Weave, the fabric of all existence, was made by the FirstSpun on the First Loom, with three tools: If's Spindle, Once's Warp Stones, and Ever's Shuttle. When the FirstSpun wove themselves into the Weave, the tools stayed behind. For ages they were kept at Frays End by the LoomWardens, the Keepers of the Eternal Loom: three Elders set apart to tend the Loom, one each for Imagination, Memory, and Spirit.

The Eternal Loom mends the Weave. It turns day and night, and any story recovered in Threadbare returns to it to be stitched back into the world. But it cannot make the Weave, and it cannot unmake it. Only the tools of the Great Weaving could do that.

Null, the Eighth Elder, the only Elder woven by all three of the FirstSpun, understood this better than anyone. Null took the three tools from the LoomWardens and hid them across Threadbare. Each theft is a statement of Null's Three Denials. With the tools in hand, the Unweaving would no longer need to wait for the world to forget itself one thread at a time. It could unpick the Great Weave entirely.

Meanwhile, the Void keeps spreading, as it has since it was born at LoomLit. It does not serve Null. It simply does what it does, and Null uses it: every region it frays is somewhere the Obscurists can work unseen, and somewhere a stolen tool can be hidden.

The Weave has need of a StoryWeaver. And so one is woven.

The Story

Prologue: Woven

The StoryWeaver is woven when the Weave has need of one, in an old sewing machine. They have no family, no guardian, and no home town. They wake alone: a strange being in a strange new land. There have been many StoryWeavers before, each unique and unrelated, each woven in their own time. This one is new. They start out unsure that stories matter at all, or that they could make any difference.

Act One: Frays End

The StoryWeaver finds their way to Frays End, the last bastion of hope against the ever-encroaching Void, protected by the presence of the Elders and the Eternal Loom. In the Everlasting Library they meet the LoomWardens, Echo, Whim, and Vigil, and learn what has been lost: the three tools of the First Loom, stolen by one of the Elders' own.

The StoryWeaver's first deep encounter with what the Void is, and what it is not, comes through Frith FrayWalker's Letter, the final words of the Elder who walked into the Void. Across the single bridge from Frays End lie the Imagine Isles, where the StoryWeaver can learn, practise, and play at any time.

Act Two: The Three Recoveries

The StoryWeaver sets out to recover the three tools. The three arcs can be played in any order, and each takes place in a region of Threadbare rich in the tool's Core Thread. Each is guided by the LoomWarden of that thread: Whim for If's Spindle, Echo for Once's Warp Stones, and Vigil for Ever's Shuttle.

Each arc is also a confrontation with one of Null's Three Denials, felt in the lives of the Threadlings who live there. A place that has stopped imagining believes Not. A place that has stopped remembering believes None. A place that has stopped passing things on believes Never. Each arc ends when the StoryWeaver answers that denial, recovers the tool, and overcomes what the Obscurists and the Void have left to guard it.

Act Three: The Observatory of the Obscure

With the tools recovered, the StoryWeaver journeys North to the WeaveWatch Wale, through the passages beneath the mountains and over the Absurdity Abyss, to the Observatory of the Obscure. An Observist of the University of the Unseen, trapped in the Observatory when Null took it, becomes the StoryWeaver's source of the truth about Null and the Void.

The final confrontation with Null is not a battle of blows but of meaning. Null argues each of the Three Denials, and the StoryWeaver answers each with what their journey has proven: that the world can be imagined otherwise, that gone is not the same as nothing, and that lasting is passing on. Null is not redeemed, and is not destroyed. Null endures, as absence always does. But the Unweaving fails, and the Void is driven back.

Finale: The LoomLight at Frays End

For the first time since LoomLit was lost to the Void, the LoomLight Festival is held, recreated at Frays End as a celebration of the Void's defeat. The Hand Binding string is passed not to a single keeper but hand to hand through every community, in remembrance of Ever. The StoryWeaver ends the journey as a confident creator and keeper of stories, and an inspiration to others. The Weave is not finished. It never is. But it holds.
