feat(ai): show persistent execution steps and chat Markdown - #1402
Agent turns now show execution steps inline as they happen: one compact row per tool invocation, expandable details, separate provider-exposed reasoning, and explicit running/succeeded/failed/stopped states. Repeated calls keep distinct IDs; completion updates the original row. The final answer stays below the steps.
Store bounded execution metadata with the originating chat turn in the existing sidecar, including failed and stopped turns. Switching sessions keeps the trace in its original conversation. Restart restores completed/failed steps and marks interrupted running tools stopped; old histories and malformed optional metadata remain readable.
Render user messages, streamed/final answers, reasoning and summaries as Markdown with GFM tables. Preserve source indentation and code fences for sending, copying and persistence. Skip HTML, reject unsafe/local link navigation, route safe links through the desktop URL handler and render remote images as alt text. Arguments retain IDs/counts/options rather than arbitrary text, paths or credentials; results keep bounded summaries rather than raw tool/provider payloads.
Complements #1177 without changing token accounting. Both touch the chat panel and may need a final rebase when one lands.
Real Electron 41.2.1 on macOS, operated through OS computer-use with an isolated profile and a local scripted provider. These screenshots contain only synthetic test content and live on a separate evidence branch, outside this PR's diff.
Testing
Based on main 5bb1b3fb, using Node 22.22.1 / npm 10.9.4:
Full unit suite: 5,041 passed, 8 skipped; 367 files passed, one skipped.
Both TypeScript configurations, i18n, docs and Vite build passed. Lint: no errors, 26 existing warnings.
Real LangChain/ChatOpenAI HTTP regression covers two identical read calls, schema-invalid input and an unknown tool: four distinct rows, correct terminal states, no duplicates. SDK schema errors omit the usual error status, so the implementation reconciles ToolMessages with actual executor verdicts.
Tests cover out-of-order completion, failed/stopped persistence, session deletion, legacy/malformed histories, Markdown source send/copy, and unsafe HTML/links/images. The final nine tracker/persistence regressions and test TypeScript check passed after adding numeric-secret and malformed-metadata assertions.
Desktop slice: sent multiline Markdown, expanded reasoning and a failed tool, checked rendered lists/code/table, switched sessions during execution, and fully quit/relaunched. Completed and stopped traces restored in the originating session; new conversations stayed empty. The manual checklist records this partial pass and exclusions.
Limits and rollback
No paid provider, Windows/Linux desktop runtime, capture/webcam/audio, native preview/export or release-promotion QA was exercised. Providers without exposed reasoning show tools only. Tool summaries are capped at 1,000 characters and reasoning blocks at 32,768; raw tool results are not persisted. New parser dependencies are pinned, with no existing locked package versions changed.
Reverting the PR removes the new display/events; optional sidecar metadata does not change the project document schema.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Chat messages now display expandable AI reasoning and tool-execution steps, including status, duration, and concise results.
Execution steps persist with conversations and remain available after reopening them. Interrupted running steps appear as stopped, and sensitive information is redacted from summaries.
Chat content supports GitHub-style Markdown, including tables and code formatting. Embedded HTML and unsafe links are restricted.
Enter sends a message; Shift+Enter inserts a line break. Original Markdown is preserved when sending and copying. Execution-step labels are available in supported languages.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The change adds ordered reasoning and tool execution steps to agent chats, persists them with chat messages, and displays them in the chat panel. It also adds Markdown rendering for chat content, with GFM support and restrictions on HTML, images, and link navigation.

Summary
Execution-step schema and tracking src/lib/ai-edition/chatExecution.ts, electron/ai-edition/chat-execution.ts, electron/ai-edition/chat-execution.test.ts
Defines bounded reasoning and tool-step data, helpers to track and summarize steps, and restoration behavior for interrupted tool steps. Tests cover ordering, repeated calls, redaction, truncation, and tool failures.
Captures tool and reasoning events during agent runs, forwards execution-step events to the renderer, and stores steps with the originating message. Persistence tests cover reloads, session changes, deleted sessions, and malformed or legacy metadata.
Execution-step display and chat integration src/components/ai-edition/ChatExecutionSteps.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/LeftPanel.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/ChatExecutionSteps.test.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/LeftPanel.stop.test.tsx, src/i18n/locales/*/editor.json
Displays live and saved steps with statuses, durations, and summaries. The chat panel handles session changes and failed results, and locale files add execution-step labels and status text.
Adds GFM Markdown rendering for chat content, reasoning, and summaries. HTML is skipped, images display as alt text, and only HTTP, HTTPS, and mailto links render as anchors. Dependency, style, test, documentation, and package-hash updates support the rendering changes.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1177: Extends the shared chat message, event, and persistence paths that this change also modifies.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 99146
The changes are mergeable with a bounded performance follow-up: long reasoning responses may cause chat-panel stutter. Completed tool updates are now coalesced rather than each triggering a disk write.

It uses a conventional commit prefix and stays within one sentence of 8 words.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It includes a Summary that explains the execution-step and Markdown changes. It links the related issue with "Fixes #1169", which is a complete closing reference. It marks Feature and Documentation as the type of change, Minor as the release impact, and Not platform-specific as the desktop impact. It also includes screenshots and a detailed Testing section. Some template fields need small corrections. The Testing section gives test counts and commands, but it does not list the exact commands run. The description also says the screenshots were run on macOS, while the Desktop impact section marks the change as not platform-specific. The description does not clearly state that the PR is not platform-specific in light of the macOS-only desktop run. The Summary and Testing sections are long, but the template structure is complete.

Explanation
Scope: #1169 is the only active directly linked issue. Its coding requirements apply. No repository inspection was possible in this run. The assessment uses the supplied whole-PR summary (merge base 67c2306 to head 9914670) and the earlier source-level evidence.
Changes since the previous reviewed head: the nix/package.nix npmDepsHash value. This is not a #1169 requirement. Earlier conclusions remain supported.
Requirement coverage [#1169]:
Ordered, collapsible steps, separate from the final answer. ChatExecutionSteps renders steps in order, collapsed by default. The final answer renders below the steps. Token accounting is unchanged. Met.
Reasoning only when the provider exposes it. Reasoning steps come from provider thinking deltas. Providers without exposed reasoning show tools only. Met.
Per-invocation rows with name, argument summary, status, elapsed time, and result or error summary. toolExecutionStep summarizes selected arguments. executionSummary bounds the result or failure text. The component shows running, succeeded, failed, and stopped states with duration. Met.
Repeated and concurrent calls. Rows use model tool-call IDs. The observer reconciles ToolMessages with executor verdicts. The real ChatOpenAI HTTP regression covers two identical reads, one schema-invalid call, and one unknown tool, giving four distinct rows. Out-of-order completion is tested. Met.
Retention on the originating project, session, and turn. Steps are stored on the user message and moved to the assistant message on success or cancel. Failed and stopped turns persist. Events for non-current sessions are ignored. Deleted sessions are not recreated. Restart restores completed and failed steps and marks interrupted running steps stopped. Tested. Met.
Privacy and bounds. Arguments keep IDs, counts, and options. Credentials are redacted. Summaries are capped at 1,000 characters and reasoning at 32,768. Raw tool results and raw provider events are not persisted. Met per the summary.
Existing histories remain readable. Missing or malformed executionSteps are treated as absent. Tested. Met.
Multiline Markdown input and source preservation. Send and copy use the untrimmed source. Enter sends and Shift+Enter inserts a line break. Met.
Markdown output. ChatMarkdown with GFM renders user messages, streamed and final answers, and reasoning. Met.
Safe rendering. Raw HTML is skipped. Remote images render as alt text. Only http, https, and mailto links are allowed. Explicit HTTPS links open through the desktop URL handler. Tested. Met.
Minor uncertainty: the issue asks that structured tool arguments appear in code blocks. The summary does not confirm this formatting. This does not establish an unmet requirement, because arguments are bounded and redacted.
Excluded file: package-lock.json matches ignored rule !**/package-lock.json. The verdict does not depend on its contents. react-markdown 10.1.0 and remark-gfm 4.0.1 are declared in package.json, and ChatMarkdown uses those declared packages.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Each changed area maps to a #1169 objective or supports one:
Execution-step model and tracker (electron/ai-edition/chat-execution.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/chatExecution.ts, src/native/contracts.ts): required for step, status, and event handling.
Deep-agent service, chat service, and nativeBridge.ts: stream tool and reasoning steps through the existing event flow. Steps persist on the originating turn, including failed turns. Untrimmed finalText supports source preservation.
chat-persistence.ts: optional sidecar metadata with legacy-safe restoration.
LeftPanel.tsx, ChatExecutionSteps.tsx, ChatMarkdown.tsx, and ChatMarkdown.module.css: display steps, render Markdown, and preserve source for send and copy.
package.json (react-markdown, remark-gfm): dependencies required for GFM rendering.
i18n locale files: labels for step statuses and reasoning text.
Tests and documentation (ai-agent.md, manual-e2e-checklist.md): cover and describe the new behavior. The checklist entry records a partial manual test of this feature.
nix/package.nix: one-line npmDepsHash update that follows from the new package.json dependencies. It supports the Markdown objective.
No change was found that is unrelated to #1169. The npmDepsHash value in the current summary differs from the value requested in PR comments. Whether the value matches the lockfile is a CI build question, not a scope question. It does not change this assessment. package-lock.json is excluded and was not inspected; this does not change the verdict.

Thanks for this, the evidence is great! One CI blocker: adding react-markdown and remark-gfm changed package-lock.json, so the npmDepsHash check fails. Please set npmDepsHash in nix/package.nix to sha256-wThbLdQzkdrtKnYIKlUWP1pnwC1OILn3ZgjXJ1jjPnQ= (the value CI computed from your lockfile) and push.
Thanks for catching this and for providing the computed hash! Updated npmDepsHash in nix/package.nix to sha256-wThbLdQzkdrtKnYIKlUWP1pnwC1OILn3ZgjXJ1jjPnQ= and pushed in 9a215a2. The new CI run is queued.
Reasoning updates re-send and re-redact the full accumulated text on every delta.
Each thinking(delta) call has three costs:
executionText(text + delta, 32768) runs three regexes over up to 32 KB.
update(step) emits the whole reasoning step. chat-service.ts forwards it as an executionStep event.
The renderer then re-parses that growing text with ChatMarkdown on each event.
Reasoning models stream thousands of deltas per block. IPC volume and Markdown re-parsing grow quadratically with block length. This can make the chat panel stutter.
Throttle the emit for reasoning steps, for example to once per 100 ms. Always emit the latest reasoning step when a tool step starts and in finish. Keep the accumulation in steps unchanged.

Thanks a lot for this, it's a great addition! I rebased the branch onto main (it overlapped with the token-usage work from #1177, so I reconciled both) and applied CodeRabbit's suggestion to persist tool starts immediately. Merging once CI is green.
