Summary

Adds a Playwright suite in e2e/integration.

  • An in-process fake GitHub serves OAuth, REST, GraphQL and uploads. Every response is validated against GitHub's published REST description, webhook schemas and GraphQL schema, and any contract violation fails the test.
  • Covers:
    • OAuth connect, scope unions, disconnect, and revoked or SAML-blocked tokens.
    • Subscriptions and webhook warnings.
    • Signed webhook deliveries for pull requests, issues, comments, pushes and review requests, plus signature rejection.
    • The sidebar and right-hand panel, link tooltips, creating an issue from a post, /github todo and /github me.
  • Layout and axe accessibility checks that block merging. Known violations are listed explicitly, so any new one fails.
  • 17 @visual screenshot comparisons. They run in a pinned, dockerized browser and server so baselines are reproducible.
  • A nightly job checks GitHub's published specs for drift against the trimmed copies committed here.

Real lane: nightly, off unless vars.REAL_GITHUB_E2E_ENABLED is set

  • Runs against github.com with a machine token stored in KV, plus one real browser sign-in using password and TOTP.
  • Fixtures are created once and reused. A write rate limiter keeps runs under GitHub's secondary limits.
  • Webhook deliveries are fetched from the hook's delivery history and replayed, because GitHub can't reach the CI Mattermost.
  • Secrets use the E2E_GITHUB_* prefix; see .env.example.

Plugin changes

  • testOAuthServerURL (ldflag, set only by make e2e-dist) now also redirects REST, GraphQL and uploads to the test server, and the plugin logs a warning on startup when it is set. Release builds are unchanged.
  • Fix: choosing an organization in the create-issue modal emptied the repository list. onChangeForOrg received the field name instead of the selected organization.
  • The legacy e2e/playwright mock now forwards REST, GraphQL and upload calls to GitHub and returns 502 instead of crashing when GitHub is unreachable.

Change Impact: 🔴 High

Changes Breakdown:

+274 -24 Production Changes (1.1%)
+25,917 -0 Test Changes (98.9%)

Regression Risk: Production changes affect GitHub API routing, OAuth test-server configuration, GraphQL client construction, and repository selection. These touch authentication and user-facing flows; test results were not supplied.

Walkthrough

This pull request adds fake- and real-GitHub end-to-end test lanes, contract validation, browser and visual coverage, and GitHub test-endpoint routing. It also updates organisation selection in the repository selector.

Changes: GitHub end-to-end test infrastructure

Layer / File(s) Summary
Route test traffic to GitHub endpoints
server/plugin/graphql/client.go, server/plugin/plugin.go, server/plugin/plugin_test.go, e2e/playwright/mock_oauth_server/mock_oauth_server.ts
The plugin and OAuth test server route REST, GraphQL, and upload traffic to configured endpoints. Tests check the configured API and upload URLs.
Configure and run the E2E environment
.github/workflows/e2e.yml, build/custom.mk, e2e/integration/docker-compose.yml, e2e/integration/package.json, e2e/integration/playwright.config.ts, e2e/integration/global_setup.ts, e2e/integration/support/*, e2e/integration/scripts/visual.sh, e2e/integration/README.md
The workflow, build targets, Compose stack, and Playwright configuration run the fake-GitHub and visual tests. Shared setup configures Mattermost and installs the plugin.
Define and validate GitHub API contracts
e2e/integration/fake-github/contract/*, .github/workflows/e2e.yml, e2e/integration/tests/contract.spec.ts, e2e/integration/README.md
The contract configuration lists REST operations, webhook events, and GraphQL fields. Spec tooling trims upstream definitions, while validation checks API requests and responses, webhooks, and GraphQL queries.
Model fake GitHub state and API behaviour
e2e/integration/fake-github/state.ts, e2e/integration/fake-github/server.ts, e2e/integration/fake-github/webhooks.ts, e2e/integration/support/fake_github.ts
The fake service provides OAuth, REST, GraphQL, control routes, state, and webhook delivery. It validates API traffic against the configured contracts and records requests and violations.
Exercise fake-GitHub plugin journeys
e2e/integration/support/*, e2e/integration/tests/*, e2e/integration/playwright.config.ts
Shared fixtures prepare plugin, user, repository, and browser state. Tests cover OAuth, issue creation, sidebar and todo behaviour, webhooks, layout, accessibility, and screenshots.
Run real-GitHub integration journeys
.github/workflows/e2e.yml, e2e/integration/real-github/*, e2e/integration/.env.example, e2e/integration/playwright.real.config.ts, e2e/integration/README.md
The real-GitHub lane prepares issue, pull-request, and webhook fixtures. Its journeys check API responses, Mattermost UI, webhook handling, and optional password-and-TOTP sign-in.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Low · up to 54303

This PR adds test infrastructure and gates release builds only on the default endpoints, so production risk is small. Before merging, install dependencies in the nightly contract-drift job, narrow the real-GitHub secrets to the step that needs them, and make the real-lane API helper and contract validator report status accurately. These problems affect nightly or test-only workflows.

Install dependencies before running contract:check.

contract:check imports graphql, which is a project dependency. The contract-drift job does not run npm ci, so it can fail with ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND on a clean runner.

Limit the real-GitHub secrets to the step that needs them.

The job-level env block exposes the machine token, account password, and TOTP secret to every step. These steps include make dist (Go and npm build tooling), npm ci, and npx playwright install. Dependency install scripts can read these values.

Move the E2E_GITHUB_* variables to the Run journey step. Keep CI: true at job level.

The documented-status check in validateResponse can never be true.

op.responses (built at Lines 40-43) contains only statuses that have a JSON schema. Statuses without a body are left out. So when validator is undefined, op.responses.has(String(status)) is always false. A status that GitHub documents without a body is therefore reported as "GitHub does not document a … response", unless it is 204 or 304. Store the documented status codes separately and check that set.

Update the operation model and construction path used by validateResponse to
retain all documented response status codes separately from schema-backed
validators. When validateResponse finds no validator, check that
documented-status set so documented bodyless responses are accepted while
undocumented statuses still produce the existing error.

Parse the response body only after the status check, and tolerate non-JSON bodies.

gh calls JSON.parse on every non-empty body before any caller sees res.status. GitHub can answer 5xx errors with an HTML or plain-text body. In that case JSON.parse throws a SyntaxError. The error hides the HTTP status. ghOK never reaches its status check.

This affects frontLoad, replayDelivery, and waitForSearch. A transient 502 then fails the nightly run with an unclear message.

Keep the raw text when parsing fails. Then ghOK can report the status.

Based on learnings: check the response status code before decoding the body, so that a failed request is not treated as a successful one.

Update the response-body parsing in gh so non-empty, non-JSON bodies are
preserved as raw text instead of throwing; keep the HTTP status available so
ghOK can report failed responses. Preserve the existing JSON parsing behaviour
for valid JSON and the undefined body for empty responses.
