New Features
Search queries ending in ! can navigate directly to the package page when the first displayed result exactly matches the query without the !. This navigation replaces the current history entry.
Bug Fixes
Trailing ! characters are excluded when matching and parsing search queries, including when handling pending Enter navigation.
Tests
Added coverage for direct navigation from a query ending in ! and for standard searches that remain on the results page.
The search page trims queries and removes a trailing exclamation mark when checking for an exact first-result match. Enter handling and the results watcher navigate to the matching package when the target matches. End-to-end tests cover queries with and without the exclamation mark.

Explanation
Issue #996 requires the optional feeling-lucky=1 search mode. The PR implements only a trailing ! in q. The watcher redirects an exact first result and otherwise leaves the search page, which matches the fallback behaviour. The E2E tests cover the bang redirect and a normal query, but they do not cover feeling-lucky=1 or the no-exact-match fallback.
Resolution
Implement feeling-lucky=1 for the lucky-search behaviour and add automated tests for an exact-match redirect and a no-exact-match fallback. Keep the trailing ! shortcut only if it remains an intended interface.

3-13: Add a test case for the bang query with no exact match (e.g., nuxt-no!).
The PR description explicitly lists https://npmx.dev/search?q=nuxt-no! as expected to show normal search results (no redirect). This is the key edge-case that distinguishes the feature from a naive "strip ! and always redirect" implementation, and it's currently untested.
Suggested additional test
test('normal search query (without "!") should not redirect', async ({ page, goto }) => {
await goto('/search?q=nuxt', { waitUntil: 'hydration' })
await expect(page.locator('[data-result-index="0"]').first()).toBeVisible({ timeout: 15000 })
await expect(page).toHaveURL(/\/search\?q=nuxt/)
})
++ test('query ending with "!" but no exact match should show search results', async ({ page, goto }) => {+ await goto('/search?q=nuxt-no!', { waitUntil: 'hydration' })+ await expect(page.locator('[data-result-index="0"]').first()).toBeVisible({ timeout: 15000 })+ await expect(page).toHaveURL(/\/search\?q=nuxt-no!/)+ })
})

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟠 Major
Case-sensitive comparison may prevent redirect for mixed-case input.
Line 448 performs a strict === comparison between firstResult?.package.name and target. However, npm package names are case-insensitive, and the visibleResults reordering logic (line 89) already uses .toLowerCase() when finding exact matches. If a user types Nuxt!, target becomes "Nuxt" while the actual package name is "nuxt", so the redirect silently fails.
The same issue exists in the Enter-key handler at line 467.
Suggested fix
- const target = pendingEnterQuery.value || rawQuery.replace(/!$/, '')+ const target = (pendingEnterQuery.value || rawQuery.replace(/!$/, '')).toLowerCase()
if (!target) return
// Navigate if first result matches the target query
const firstResult = results[0]
- if (firstResult?.package.name === target) {+ if (firstResult?.package.name.toLowerCase() === target) {
And in the Enter-key handler:
- const cleanedInputValue = inputValue.replace(/!$/, '')+ const cleanedInputValue = inputValue.replace(/!$/, '').toLowerCase()
// Check if first result matches the input value exactly
const firstResult = displayResults.value[0]
- if (firstResult?.package.name === cleanedInputValue) {+ if (firstResult?.package.name.toLowerCase() === cleanedInputValue) {

Route-only ! queries skip the lucky redirect on /search.
When a ! query is submitted from the command palette on /search, only route.query.q changes. The search model keeps its previous non-empty value, and committed results do not update. displayResults therefore does not change, so the lucky watcher does not run. The redirect is skipped and the page keeps showing the previous results.
The watcher in app/pages/search.vue reads route.query.q, but it runs only when displayResults changes. Updating the search model alone does not fix this. With instant search off, committed results change only on submit. A fix must also let a route-only query change run the lucky check, and it must keep the existing behaviour of useGlobalSearch for the other pages that use it.

Trim the route query before the lucky-mode ! check.
The watcher reads route.query.q without trimming, so nuxt! fails the endsWith('!') test and no redirect happens. The page display and the Enter-key path both trim the value, so /search?q=nuxt!%20 does not redirect while /search?q=nuxt! does.

Clear the stale Enter target before a lucky search.
After Enter on a query with no exact match, pendingEnterQuery stays set. The watcher then compares results with this stale target, not the ! query, so q=nuxt! may not redirect. The removed focus check also keeps the stale target active. Clear it when a new search starts, or give the ! target precedence.

Strip the trailing ! in the claim-prompt name check.

Strip the trailing ! in the claim-prompt name check.
For a query such as newname!, availability is checked for newname. The confirmed branch of showClaimPrompt compares that name with the query including !, so the claim prompt stays hidden for an available name after results load. Compare against the same stripped form used for the availability check.

avail.name with the committed query after trimming whitespace and stripping a
trailing exclamation mark, matching the normalisation used by

Match the lucky redirect against all results, not only the first one.
When the user selects a non-relevance sort, displayResults can reorder the results. The exact package may then no longer be at index 0. The watcher reads only newResults[0], so a query such as nuxt! does not redirect when nuxt is in the list. The page stays on the results.
Search the full result list for the exact name when isFeelingLucky is set. A query without ! keeps the current first-result check.

Replace the search entry when Enter navigates from a ! query.
With instant search on (the default), the URL already holds q=nuxt! when Enter is pressed. The Enter branch pushes the package page on top of that entry. Back restores q=nuxt!, and the results watcher redirects to the package again, so a second Back is needed to leave. Pass replace when the current query ends with !, as the watcher does. The condition reads the current URL query, so with instant search off it does not replace an earlier query entry.

Update the Enter-navigation branch for `firstResult` to determine whether the
current URL query ends with `!` using `normalizeSearchParam(route.query.q)`, and
pass that condition as `replace` to `navigateToPackage`. This replaces the
active `!` search entry while leaving earlier query history intact when instant
search is off.
