I noticed RectangularParallelepiped wasn't pairing up its periodic surfaces so setting periodic boundary conditions on an RPP didn't actually work the way you'd expect, so this pairs the opposite x, y and z planes the same way you'd do by hand and I think that matches what people would assume the boundary_type does. Fixes #3966

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Rectangular parallelepipeds with periodic boundaries now pair opposing faces across all three axes, both when created and when their boundary type is changed.
    • Switching the boundary type to vacuum updates the component surfaces; switching back to periodic restores the corresponding face pairings.
    • Periodic face pairings are preserved when composite surfaces are translated or rotated, whether the transformation is applied in place or to a copy.
    • Fixed an issue affecting fixed-source models with nested periodic rectangular parallelepipeds.

When boundary_type is periodic, assign periodic_surface partners for
opposite faces of the box, matching RectangularPrism and HexagonalPrism.

Walkthrough

RectangularParallelepiped now pairs opposite faces for periodic boundaries. Composite-surface translation and rotation preserve periodic pairings. Tests cover boundary changes, transforms, and a fixed-source model run.

Changes: Periodic parallelepiped boundaries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Periodic face pairing
openmc/model/surface_composite.py, tests/unit_tests/test_surface_composite.py, tests/unit_tests/test_periodic_bc.py
The constructor and boundary_type setter pair opposite faces when the boundary type is periodic. Tests check face pairing, boundary-type changes, and a fixed-source model run.
Preserve pairings through transforms
openmc/model/surface_composite.py, tests/unit_tests/test_surface_composite.py
Translation and rotation capture periodic component pairs before transforming surfaces, then restore the pairings. Tests cover copied and in-place transforms.

Pairing opposite faces of a parallelepiped for periodic boundaries now works, and transforms preserve the pairings. One edge case remains. If a user changes a face's boundary type and pairs its partner with an external plane, a later translate or rotate can silently replace that valid pairing with a stale link. The model would then have wrong boundary conditions. Require reciprocal links before recording pairs, then merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Pair periodic surfaces for RectangularParallelepiped" matches the main change. The summary says RectangularParallelepiped now pairs each minimum plane with its maximum plane when boundary_type is periodic, and the linked issue asks for the same automatic pairing. The title is specific and concise.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the problem and the fix. It says RectangularParallelepiped did not pair its periodic surfaces, and that the PR pairs opposite x, y and z planes. It links the issue with "Fixes #3966". The template's AI Assistance section is missing, and the checklist and the Description heading are not filled in. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes, but the author should complete the template sections.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3966 requires RectangularParallelepiped to assign periodic partners for opposite x-, y-, and z-plane surfaces. The constructor and boundary_type setter perform these assignments. The tests verify construction, setter changes, reciprocal links, transformed composites, and a runnable nested periodic model.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #3966. The composite-surface transform handling preserves the periodic relationships required by the new pairing behavior. The added tests directly cover the pairing, setter, transform, and runtime behavior.

Restore periodic pairs after rotation.

If a box is rotated, set to periodic, and then rotated again, Plane.rotate creates new planes without partners. The exported geometry has six unpaired periodic surfaces, so OpenMC rejects the model. Pair the rotated faces after creating them. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reconnect periodic partners after translating a composite.

For a non-inplace translation with a nonzero vector, CompositeSurface.translate processes each component separately. PlaneMixin.translate calls Surface.clone, which deep-copies the partner but clears the ID only on the root clone. Each translated RPP face therefore points to a separate copied partner with the original partner ID, not to the translated partner. XML serialization writes that stale ID.

After translating all components, map each original component to its translated component and reconnect periodic partners within the composite. RectangularParallelepiped does not override translate or rotate, so the shared CompositeSurface path also affects other composites with paired components.

Accept axis-aligned planes as periodic partners.

PlaneMixin.periodic_surface accepts only Plane, but XPlane is not a Plane subclass. This assignment therefore raises TypeError. The constructor, the boundary-type setter, and both new tests fail. Update the partner type check to accept all planar surface types. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Record only reciprocal periodic pairs.

Surface.boundary_type does not clear _periodic_surface. After xmax changes to vacuum and xmin.periodic_surface is set to an external plane, xmax.periodic_surface still points to xmin.

_periodic_pairs() records this one-way link. A later translate() or rotate() restores it through the reciprocal setter and replaces xmin's external partner. Zero-vector translation can also modify the original component planes because plane translation returns self.
