Summary

A DOWN event can observe an empty pool, allow recovery to complete during a distance-policy or pool-state callback, and then mark the healthy host down. Capture the host health generation before inspection and validate it under the host lock at DOWN admission. Qualified healthy pool publication, explicit readiness without pool work, and newer DOWN admission invalidate older observations. Existing pool-failure reservation checks remain in force, and policy callbacks run outside state locks.

Pool publication must validate usable connection state and current pool ownership together. A candidate that closes or becomes defunct before publication must not advance host health or discard a genuine DOWN. Administrative ignored-host ADD completion and publication of an empty or closed pool do not establish health. Pool-future aggregation preserves readiness bookkeeping without independently advancing health. Publication uses a short membership guard so background connection creation or keyspace waits do not block it.

Promote the recovery regressions from strict expected failures and cover pool publication during inspection, including publication by another session while a failure reservation remains current. A subsequent genuine failure still dispatches DOWN handling.

This is the first Stage 2 ownership fix for #925, following merged #1144. Socket and shard ownership fencing remains follow-up work under #858 and #859. The change affects internal host lifecycle and pool publication; public APIs and wire protocols are unchanged.

Cluster DOWN handling captures a host health generation before connectivity inspection and passes it to lifecycle coordination. Lifecycle coordination rejects stale DOWN reports. Accepted DOWN reports and selected readiness or pool-publication paths advance the generation. Pool membership and keyspace synchronization use coordinated locking. Tests cover stale observations, pool publication, and concurrent connection and pool changes.

Resolved findings
1. Stale shard sockets enter a current pool ✗ Dismissed
Description
_open_connection_to_missing_shard() now calls _sync_keyspace(..., publish=True), which inserts
the newly opened connection into _connections without checking the pool's topology generation or
endpoint ownership. If the host endpoint or pool is replaced while the asynchronous connection or
keyspace operation is in progress, the old connection can still be published and receive later
requests.
Code

cassandra/pool.py[730]

+ self._sync_keyspace(connection, publish=True)
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Asynchronously opened shard connections are published after keyspace synchronization without verifying that the pool and endpoint are still current, allowing stale connections to enter a replacement pool.

## Fix Focus Areas
- cassandra/pool.py[721-730]
- cassandra/pool.py[907-911]

## Recommended Fix
Capture the owning pool/topology generation and endpoint before opening or synchronizing the connection, then revalidate them under the membership and pool lifecycle locks immediately before inserting into `_connections`. Close and discard the connection when ownership or endpoint validation fails, including both replacement and missing-shard paths.

2. A live shard can still be marked DOWN ✗ Dismissed
Description
run_add_or_renew_pool() leaves the health generation unchanged when it publishes a pool with zero
open connections, and later asynchronous shard-connection installation does not advance that
generation. If a DOWN handler observed the host before publication and a shard connection becomes
usable afterward, its old observation can still pass admission and mark the live host down.
Code

cassandra/cluster.py[R4854-4855]

+ if pool_has_connections:
+ host._health_generation += 1
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A connectionless pool publication leaves an earlier DOWN observation valid even when asynchronous shard work subsequently makes that pool live.
## Fix Focus Areas
- cassandra/cluster.py[4851-4855]
- cassandra/pool.py[503-511]
- cassandra/pool.py[908-929]
## Recommended Fix
Advance host health ownership when an asynchronous shard connection becomes usable in a published, current pool. Preserve the intended behavior that publishing a pool with no usable connection does not itself fence DOWN.

3. A failed pool can suppress a valid DOWN ✓ Resolved
Description
run_add_or_renew_pool() snapshots new_pool.open_count before taking the publication locks, then
increments the host health generation from that snapshot even if the counted connection has closed
or become defunct. If a DOWN handler observed an empty pool before publication, that increment makes
it reject the failure despite the published pool having no usable connection.
Code

cassandra/cluster.py[4832]

+ pool_has_connections = bool(new_pool.open_count)
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
The pre-lock connection-count snapshot can become stale before publication and incorrectly invalidate a legitimate DOWN observation.
## Fix Focus Areas
- cassandra/cluster.py[4832-4855]
- cassandra/pool.py[1116-1119]
## Recommended Fix
Coordinate the live-connection observation with publication so a connection that has closed or become defunct cannot advance the host health generation. Keep policy callbacks outside state locks and avoid introducing a pool/session lock-order inversion.

ⓘ Copy this prompt and use it to remediate the issue with your preferred AI generation tools

4. Ignored hosts can miss DOWN handling ✓ Resolved
Description
mark_ready() increments _health_generation even when set_up=False, leaving an ignored host's
is_up state unchanged. If an ignored-host addition finishes after on_down() observes health but
before DOWN admission, the generation check rejects the DOWN event, so its callbacks and
reconnection handling do not run.
Code

cassandra/_lifecycle.py[462]

+ host._health_generation += 1
Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
Ignored-host addition can advance the health generation without marking the host up, causing a concurrent DOWN event to be rejected.

## Fix Focus Areas
- cassandra/_lifecycle.py[459-462]
- cassandra/cluster.py[2769-2777]

## Recommended Fix
Advance `_health_generation` in `mark_ready()` only when the call establishes an up state. Add a regression covering DOWN inspection overlapping ignored-host addition with `set_up=False`.

Assert that the distance inspection ran.

The checks for this test's purpose run only inside the distance callback: the ignored ADD during inspection, listener.on_add, and the preserved is_up value. The checks after on_down hold whether or not that callback runs:

  • If initial_state is True, begin_down dispatches on_down_potentially_blocking.
  • Otherwise, begin_down calls _restart_reconnector.

Cluster.on_down calls profile_manager.distance only when _discount_down_events is true. If a configuration change skips that call, the test still passes and the ignored-ADD race is no longer covered. Add a check after on_down so the test fails when the inspection does not run.

Add a check after on_down so the test fails when the inspection does not run.

Added post-on_down assertions that distance inspection ran and listener.on_add was called once for the host. All three initial-state cases pass, and all three controls that skip inspection now fail at the added assertion.

A DOWN event can observe an empty pool, let recovery finish during a
policy or pool-state callback, and then tear down the healthy host.
Capture the host health generation before inspection and validate it
under the host lock at DOWN admission. Retain pool-failure reservations
and admit later genuine failures with a fresh observation.

Qualify recovery health through explicit readiness without pool work or
initial publication of a usable connection under current pool ownership.
Keep membership, Session, Host and the selected Connection protected
through publication. Ignored ADD, empty or failed candidates and later UP/ADD
aggregate bookkeeping must not manufacture health evidence.

Use a short membership guard for publication and member/shutdown changes.
Synchronize new members before insertion and pair keyspace targets with
member snapshots, keeping connection creation and USE waits outside the
guard so background work cannot block initial publication.

Cover healthy and failed publication, actual UP/ADD aggregation, ignored
ADD execution, current failure reservations, later genuine failure and
publication progress during contention and unanswered corrective USE.
Keep later asynchronous shard health and socket ownership fencing under
#858 and #859.
