What

New crate crates/lance-graph-nal. It is excluded from the workspace and has its own workspace root, like lance-graph-r2il. It implements the first NAL operations from .claude/plans/nal-polyfill-v1.md in the typed nal::{Op} form described in §4 G.

  • The NodeGuid is the address and the distinguished name. A belief's key is its NodeGuid in the reading nal-statement-v1: [classid, S, copula, P, id]. The truth values f and c are not part of the name. They are value lanes written in the key's sealed order, so key row i and truth row i are always the same belief.

  • A selection is the 16-byte key minus an aperture. Aperture { key, bytes } fixes the first bytes bytes and leaves the rest free. On the witnessed HHTL order, the matching rows form one range, which the contract's SealedFacetLane::bound_aperture finds:

    cared bytes selects
    4 the whole class
    6 one subject
    10 one statement

    No foreign keys are involved.

  • Bind once, then run the kept program. nal::{Question, TruthAtLeast, Choice} run their R2IL procedure (NalOp::lower) over FoldDialect once, when binding, and keep the mask-risc Program it produces. Each later call only runs execute_compiled. The aperture's range is passed as the execution extent, so the confidence predicate and the MAX fold read only the rows in that range.

  • No new opcode: FN = None for every operation.

Measured

examples/nal_cost.rs: release build, AVX-512, median of 101 runs, each answer checked against the row loop before timing. n = 1,048,576.

operation ns
Question (statement or subject) 19–20
TruthAtLeast, one statement 81
TruthAtLeast, 245-row subject 127
Choice (max confidence), subject 248
bind (aperture search + procedure) 274
row loop 495,000–559,000

Passing the subject range as an ANDed mask instead of as the extent took 195 µs.

Tests

tests/w2.rs has 7 tests that compare against a row-at-a-time oracle over the unsorted input. They include the aperture-width test (class ⊃ subject ⊃ statement, a different class selects nothing), the empty and the full population, and a stale witness.

I broke each guard once on purpose (disable runs); all 7 runs went red:

  • statement aperture too narrow
  • aperture one byte short
  • threshold off by one
  • threshold without its extent
  • choice reads f instead of c
  • truth lanes misaligned with the keys
  • witness not validated

Open

  • R2IL RANGE (arity 0) takes its bounds from two u8 immediates, so through that byte it cannot name a range past row 255. The procedures use FoldDialect::emit_pred(Pred::Range) instead. This needs a change in ogar-r2il; nothing is minted here.
  • No argmax fold yet: Choice returns the maximum confidence, not which belief holds it.
  • The rest of D-NALP-1 (the ClassView WideFieldMask projection and the binder mask) and everything from W3 (revision) on are still to do.

Board: STATUS_BOARD rows D-NALP-1/2, the plan status note, entry 2026-10-12-nal-coordinate-queries.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added NAL belief queries to count beliefs by statement or subject, filter by minimum confidence, and find the highest confidence in a selected range.
    • Added support for binding queries to a belief population and validating results against that population.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Rust build caching across different runner CPU features to prevent incompatible artifacts from being reused.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for resolving native Rust compiler flags and documented the new query capabilities and their current limitations.

…old path (D-NALP-1/2)

Beliefs are sealed FacetCascade keys (S, copula, P, 255-c, 255-f); every
query is a witnessed coordinate range. The typed nal::{Question,
TruthAtLeast, Support, TruthAtLeastAcross, Choice} operations run their R2IL
procedure once at bind and keep the mask-risc program; a call runs only the
kept program over the range extent.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a standalone NAL crate for sealed belief populations and compiled aperture queries. It also adds an owning compiled-program wrapper and updates selected CI workflows to resolve runner-specific Rust flags and include their hash in cache keys.

Changes: NAL Coordinate Queries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cached compiled programs
crates/lance-graph-mask-risc/src/ir.rs, crates/lance-graph-mask-risc/src/lib.rs, crates/lance-graph-mask-risc/tests/compiled_program.rs
Adds CompiledProgram, which owns a Program and its recognized lowering, and exposes a borrowed compiled view. A test compares its execution with Program::compile.
Belief keys and aperture ranges
crates/lance-graph-nal/Cargo.toml, Cargo.toml, crates/lance-graph-nal/src/lib.rs, .claude/plans/nal-polyfill-v1.md
Adds NAL belief and statement types, NodeGuid keys, byte-prefix apertures, sorted sealed truth lanes, and witness-checked binding. The plan records the key layout, term width, and aperture selection rules.
Prepared queries and validation
crates/lance-graph-nal/src/nal.rs, crates/lance-graph-nal/tests/w2.rs, crates/lance-graph-nal/examples/nal_cost.rs, .claude/board/*
Adds Question, TruthAtLeast, and Choice operations that retain compiled programs and execute over selected ranges. Tests compare results with row-wise oracles and check witness and population errors. The example reports timings and compares query results with row loops; board records document measurements and listed limitations.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to d70d8

The CI change should stop native-flag build artifacts from being reused across runners with different CPUs. A residual risk remains on virtualized runners that hide CPU features, so the maintainers should be aware of it, but it does not block merging.

A Prepared keeps the witness it was bound with and refuses a Bound for any
other population (its kept range is in the first population's coordinates).
mask-risc gains CompiledProgram, a program owned with its recognised
lowering, so a prepared query no longer re-runs recognition per call.

NARS is global: the NAL operations run over any belief population, check no
classid, and need no hot-plug or minted concept. Classid-dependent methods
are declared at compile time through a consumer's HotPlug; that path is
separate. Drops W8's concept-id mint request.

dir-sim log in Lance fails here, and it is not this PR's failure. The build script of lance-graph-contract dies with SIGILL before anything from this PR compiles. main fails the same way since 10325b3.

Cause: .cargo/config.toml builds with -Ctarget-cpu=native. dir-sim-persist.yml sets no RUSTFLAGS, and Swatinem/rust-cache restores target/ with a "full match". Cargo fingerprints the flag text, which is the same on every runner. So an artifact built on a runner with AVX-512 is reused on one without and hits an illegal instruction. Whether it fails depends on which runner the job lands on, which is why the check was green on 253eee9.

No fix exists in the tree yet. One candidate is a hash of the runner's CPU flags in the cache key; that is waiting on a decision, so I have not ported anything here. A re-run only passes if the job lands on a runner with a matching CPU.

Generated by Claude Code

.cargo/config.toml builds with target-cpu=native, and cargo fingerprints the
flag text, not the CPU. dir-sim-persist.yml and identity.yml set no RUSTFLAGS
and restore target/ from Swatinem/rust-cache, so an artifact built on a
runner with AVX-512 was reused on one without: the lance-graph-contract build
script died with SIGILL (dir-sim log in Lance, red on main since 10325b3).
Both workflows now hash /proc/cpuinfo's flags into the cache key.

Also corrects the config comment that claimed every workflow overrides
native with RUSTFLAGS; only build, rust-test and style do.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011BMJnDBAfzcuQh5HeT39Rh
A step resolves native to the CPU name and exact target-feature list
(.github/scripts/resolve-native-rustflags.sh) and sets RUSTFLAGS. Cargo then
sees different flag text on a different CPU and recompiles by itself instead
of reusing an artifact that dies with SIGILL. The cache key is derived from
the same flags, replacing the /proc/cpuinfo hash.

Checked locally: the resolved flags give the same cfg as native; the same
CPU rebuilds nothing; another CPU's flags rebuild 16 crates of
lance-graph-contract; clippy -D warnings passes with them.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_011BMJnDBAfzcuQh5HeT39Rh
Each resolve step writes the CPU name and feature hash it resolved native
to into $GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY, so every run shows which runner CPU the job
landed on without a tracked list.

Comment thread .github/scripts/resolve-native-rustflags.sh Outdated
A named target-cpu enables its model's default features, and a +feature
list cannot take them back: rustc --print cfg -Ctarget-cpu=skylake-avx512
-Ctarget-feature=+sse2 still reports avx512f. On a VM that hides AVX-512
from a CPU that keeps its model name, the resolved flags compiled AVX-512
back in, the SIGILL this script exists to prevent.

The flags are now the target's baseline CPU plus the exact native feature
list, and the script checks that rustc --print cfg under those flags equals
the native set, failing otherwise. Disable run: with the CPU name put back
(sapphirerapids on this cascadelake host) the check fails and lists the 16
features the name adds. --cpu prints the native CPU name for the job
summary.

The four ci commits ported here from #1526 are reverted so this PR carries
only the NAL work and the CI change stays visible in its own PR. #1526
merges first; this branch then picks it up from main.
