Why

Production always runs on x86-64-v4. Measured exposure: Railway hosts are about 95% v4, Claude Code sessions about 70%. Every shipped artifact here built at v3, so production ran the AVX2 arm. This PR also records #1525's board entries. Timings measured on that arm say nothing about production.

Change

site before after
Dockerfile.avx512 (canonical deploy) x86-64-v4 sapphirerapids (Railway hosts are Sapphire Rapids, Emerald Rapids or newer)
Dockerfile (fallback) RUSTFLAGS -C target-cpu=x86-64-v3 native: the build host's CPU, guarded at startup by cpu_guard
Dockerfile.hhtld, crates/cognitive-stack/Dockerfile, crates/symbiont/Dockerfile cp config-v3.toml config.toml cp config-v4.toml config.toml (x86_64 only; arm64 untouched)
crates/thinking-engine/Dockerfile, Dockerfile.railway CARGO_TARGET_X86_64_…_RUSTFLAGS x86-64-v3 x86-64-v4
python/Makefile (make publish) x86-64-v3 on x86_64 hosts x86-64-v4
new .cargo/config-v4.toml — -Ctarget-cpu=x86-64-v4, mirrors ndarray's file without -Dwarnings
build.yml no v4 coverage new linux-build-v4 matrix (x86-64-v4, sapphirerapids): compiles and links lance-graph's tests and benches with --target and debug 0 for every artifact, runs nothing. ndarray gets the same pair in AdaWorldAPI/ndarray#361

Comments in .cargo/config.toml, .cargo/config-v3.toml (no longer the shipping target) and Dockerfile.md now match. Dockerfile.md also claimed the local default was v4; it is native, and that is fixed.

Measured

  • The --config file joins with native; it does not replace it. cargo --config .cargo/config-v4.toml passes rustc -Ctarget-cpu=native -Ctarget-cpu=x86-64-v4. The later flag wins: the cfg equals v4 alone, 23 target features against native's 32 on this Cascade Lake host. The v3 file behaves the same way.
  • The Dockerfiles copy the file over config.toml, so no join happens there.
  • cargo check -p lance-graph-contract passes under the new config.
  • --target keeps RUSTFLAGS off build scripts. Without it, a build script compiles with target-cpu=x86-64-v4 and would run on a v3 runner. With --target x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, the build script compiles with no target-cpu and the crate with v4 (scratch crate, cargo build -v).

Safety

On a host without AVX-512, ndarray's startup cpu_guard names the missing features and exits before main. This holds only for binaries that link ndarray.

Not done (open, recorded in the board entry)

  • Both tiers are compiled in CI but never run there. Most GitHub runners are v3. The Sapphire Rapids tier runs only in Dockerfile.avx512's build stage. The test jobs still run on a v3 pin rather than per-runner native.
  • No docker build was run. Dockerfile and Dockerfile.avx512 previously could not resolve the workspace (no ndarray/OGAR siblings, tools/ not copied); they now clone ndarray and OGAR at their default branches and copy tools/. In a Docker-shaped layout every member and path dependency resolves; the registry download was not run.
  • The config-v4 images build with --target <host triple> so v4 flags stay off build scripts (codex P1).
  • Probes don't refuse. Probes and examples still report timings when run off v4.

Board

Entry 2026-10-13-production-targets-v4.md (D-PROD-V4); entries index regenerated; --check and append_only_gate pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Deployment
    • Production builds now target x86-64-v4, requiring AVX-512 support on deployment machines. Binaries may exit before starting on unsupported CPUs.
    • The standard Docker image uses the build machine’s CPU features, so its binaries may also require matching capabilities at runtime.
  • Builds
    • Added build checks for the production CPU targets.
    • Python wheels now target x86-64-v4 on x86-64 systems.

Generated by Claude Code

Production always runs on v4 (Railway about 95%, Claude Code sessions about
70%), so everything shipped builds for x86-64-v4: Dockerfile,
Dockerfile.hhtld, cognitive-stack, symbiont, both thinking-engine images,
and the wheel (make publish). New .cargo/config-v4.toml mirrors ndarray's
(without -Dwarnings) and applies to x86_64 only, so arm64 builds are
untouched. On a host without AVX-512, ndarray's startup cpu_guard exits with
the missing features instead of a mid-run SIGILL.

Measured: --config .cargo/config-v4.toml joins with config.toml's native
(-Ctarget-cpu=native -Ctarget-cpu=x86-64-v4); the later flag wins, the cfg
equals v4 alone (23 features vs native's 32 on this host). The Dockerfiles
copy the file over config.toml and never join.

Comments in config.toml, config-v3.toml (no longer the shipping target) and
Dockerfile.md updated to match. Board entry D-PROD-V4 records the decision
and what stays open (CI tests the v3 arm only; probes don't refuse off-v4
timings; Dockerfile.avx512 now duplicates Dockerfile).

Target configuration and build guidance
.cargo/config*.toml, .claude/board/entries/*, .claude/board/entries/README.md, Dockerfile.md
Cargo configuration and build guidance identify x86-64-v4 as the production tier and sapphirerapids as the canonical deployment target. The decision record documents target usage, build settings, and open verification items.
Container build targets
Dockerfile, Dockerfile.avx512, Dockerfile.hhtld, crates/cognitive-stack/Dockerfile, crates/symbiont/Dockerfile, crates/thinking-engine/Dockerfile*
Container builds use native, x86-64-v4, or sapphirerapids targets. Selected builds use explicit host triples and copy target-specific binaries into runtime paths.
CI and wheel build targets
.github/workflows/build.yml, python/Makefile
CI adds x86-64-v4 and sapphirerapids compile checks. The Python wheel build selects x86-64-v4 on x86_64 hosts.

Wheel publishing may fail on an x86_64 build host without AVX-512. Use target-scoped flags or require an AVX-512 publish host; the remaining risk is limited to that build workflow.

linux-build-v4 builds lance-graph's tests and benches for x86-64-v4 on a
GitHub runner (mostly v3) and runs nothing. --target keeps RUSTFLAGS off
build scripts and proc-macros, which do run on the host.

With --target, RUSTFLAGS no longer reaches build scripts and proc-macros,
which then took the profile default (measured: -C debuginfo=2 on a build
script). CARGO_PROFILE_{DEV,TEST}_DEBUG=0 pins them to 0; runner disk
makes that mandatory.

Railway hosts are Sapphire Rapids, Emerald Rapids or newer. The canonical
deploy file now compiles VNNI, BF16 and FP16 in; plain Dockerfile stays at
x86-64-v4 as the fallback. The build stage runs the tests, so a build on an
older host fails there instead of in production.

The canonical deploy file stays sapphirerapids; the fallback builds for the
build host's CPU, guarded at startup by ndarray's cpu_guard. Board records
that neither Dockerfile provides the ndarray sibling the build needs.

linux-build-v4 becomes a matrix over x86-64-v4 and sapphirerapids, each
compiled and linked with --target and run nowhere. Companion:
AdaWorldAPI/ndarray#361.

P1 Badge Keep v4 flags off host-side build helpers

On an x86_64 build machine without AVX-512, copying this config and then invoking Cargo without --target also compiles host build scripts and proc-macros for x86-64-v4; Cargo executes those helpers during the image build, so they can SIGILL before the target binary is produced. The new workflow explicitly documents this behavior and uses --target to avoid it (.github/workflows/build.yml lines 91–95), but this Dockerfile and the equivalent crates/cognitive-stack/Dockerfile and crates/symbiont/Dockerfile builds omit that separation. Add an explicit target or otherwise apply v4 flags only to target artifacts.

Agreed, and reproduced: with config-v4.toml in place and no --target, a build script compiles with target-cpu=x86-64-v4; with --target <host triple> it gets none and only the crate gets v4. Fixed in 0badfaf (not yet pushed): Dockerfile.hhtld, crates/cognitive-stack/Dockerfile and crates/symbiont/Dockerfile now build with --target "$(rustc -vV | sed -n 's/^host: //p')" and copy the binaries back to the paths their runtime stages read. The host triple keeps arm64 builds working, since the config only applies to x86_64. Dockerfile and Dockerfile.avx512 are left as they are on purpose: they run the test suite on the build host, so that host must support their tier in any case.

Dockerfile.hhtld, crates/cognitive-stack/Dockerfile and
crates/symbiont/Dockerfile build with --target <host triple>, so the
cfg-keyed v4 flags reach only the binary, not build scripts and
proc-macros, which run on the build host. Outputs are copied back to the
paths the runtime stages read. (codex P1)

three earlier breaks: no ndarray sibling, a 1.98.1 base image against the
