Usage & Features Guide

GyroidVault re-imagines how 3D printer operators and makers interact with their model archives. This guide walks through the primary workspaces, 3D inspection tools, and batch organization workflows.

1. The Library Workspace & Navigation Views

GyroidVault offers flexible ways to explore your collection:

Flat Grid / List View (All Models)

A high-performance visual catalog displaying all models across your library:

  • Hover Tooltips for Truncated Names (v2.3.0 / Issue #82): Long filenames and model titles truncated by ellipsis now display their complete, untruncated name via a native hover tooltip.
  • Quick Format Filter Pills: Use the one-click format pills (All, STL, 3MF, STEP, G-Code, OBJ) right in the top toolbar—or click any format badge directly on a model card—to filter by file type.
  • Live Library Summary Counter: Keep track of your active model count and total indexed storage size right in the toolbar.
  • Dynamic Filtering & Sorting: Filter by Category, Tag, or Uploader, and sort by newest, name, or file size.
  • Maintenance Filters: Quickly isolate models that haven't been tagged or categorized yet using the Uncategorized and Untagged options.
  • View Toggle: Switch between a visual card grid and a compact row-by-row List View.

Folder View (Browse Disk)

For makers who prefer navigating their hard drive directory structure directly:

  • Switch to Folder Explorer (Browse) from the sidebar or set it as your default landing view in Settings → User Interface.
  • Navigate through nested folders with breadcrumbs and directory trees.
  • 2x2 Folder Collages: Folders automatically generate dynamic 2x2 image collages showing previews of the 3D files inside them.
  • In-Place ZIP Archive Support: .zip archives can either be deep-scanned (allowing you to preview and stream 3D files directly from inside the archive without manual extraction) or indexed as regular downloadable files.

Library Scan Modes (Folder Mode vs. File Mode) (v2.3.0 / Issue #5)

Administrators can choose how disk folders are organized in Settings → System:

  • Folder Mode (Recommended): Treats each subfolder as a single multi-part model (ideal for assemblies, kits, and multi-color prints).
  • File Mode: Treats each standalone 3D file as its own model, automatically grouping companion image and .gcode files sharing the same base name.

2. Studio 2.0: Interactive 3D Inspection (STL, 3MF & STEP)

Clicking on any model opens the Studio 2.0 workspace, organized in a clean 2-column layout:

Supported 3D & CAD Formats

  • STL & OBJ: Fast hardware-accelerated mesh rendering with automatic smooth surface normal calculation.
  • 3MF: Multi-object support, realistic shading, plus automatic extraction of embedded slicer thumbnails and metadata.
  • STEP / STP: Built-in OpenCASCADE WebAssembly tessellation renders parametric CAD .step / .stp files directly in the browser.
  • Fusion 360 .f3d: Automatically extracts embedded preview thumbnails when indexing .f3d design files.

Multi-Part Assembly (✨ All Parts on Build Plate)

If your project contains multiple STL, 3MF, or STEP parts (e.g. a multi-body enclosure, robot, or articulated print):

  • The Part Selector lets you inspect each part individually.
  • Switch to ✨ All Parts on Build Plate to load and arrange every component simultaneously on the virtual build plate.
  • Each part is rendered in a distinct filament color from a harmonious CAD palette.

Real-Time Physical Millimeter Dimensions

No more guessing if a model will fit your printer's build volume:

  • GyroidVault automatically computes the physical geometry bounding box and displays it directly in the viewer: 📏 120.4 × 85.0 × 42.1 mm
  • Dimensions update dynamically when switching between individual parts and the complete assembly.

Interactive Bottom Studio Dock

  • Camera Angles: Jump instantly between Iso (Isometric), Top, Front, and Side orthogonal views.
  • Shading Modes: Switch between Solid surface shading, Wireframe mesh triangle inspection, and semi-transparent X-Ray mode to examine internal cavities.
  • Live Filament Swatches: Test real-time material colors (Cyan, Emerald, Orange, Purple, Gold, White, Slate) with a single click.
  • 1-Click Cover Snapshot (Cover): Capture your current camera angle, zoom, and orientation directly as the model's primary thumbnail.
  • Fullscreen Studio: Click the expand icon to enter distraction-free fullscreen 3D inspection (Esc to return).

3. Organizing with Categories, Tags & Collections

Categories

High-level classifications (e.g., Functional, Decorative, Mechanical, Tools, Miniatures). Each category has a customizable color badge.

Tags

Granular descriptive markers (e.g., print-in-place, gridfinity, no-supports, m3-hardware). Easily appended or searched.

Collections & 2x2 Collages

Group related models into dedicated project albums:

  • Great for multi-model kits, client jobs, or thematic groups.
  • Use the searchable Add to Collection modal with multi-select checkboxes to add or remove a model across multiple collections at once.
  • Set a collection to Private to hide it from read-only viewers and guests.
  • 1-Click ZIP Streaming: Download an entire collection as a single compressed archive directly from the browser.

4. Power Batch Editing (Multi-Select)

To organize dozens or hundreds of models or folders quickly:

  1. In All Models or Folder Explorer (Browse), click the selection checkbox on cards (or hold Ctrl / Shift to select multiple items).
  2. A floating Batch Action Bar will slide up at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Perform instant bulk operations across all selected items:
    • Category: Assign a category (or clear the category) across all selected models or folders at once.
    • Tag: Add tags or replace existing tags across all selected items.
    • Collect: Add all selected models to a project collection.
    • Move (Folder Explorer): Move multiple files or folders to a different directory on disk.
    • Delete: Safely remove multiple models in one operation with confirmation.

5. Extended G-Code Analysis & Toolpath Preview

When you upload or scan sliced .gcode or .bgcode files, GyroidVault parses deep slicer metadata:

  • Estimated print duration, filament weight in grams, and total print cost.
  • Layer height, infill percentage and pattern, nozzle diameter, and bed temperature.
  • Interactive Layer-by-Layer Preview: Inspect G-Code toolpaths with live layer sliders, Z-height readouts, and nozzle path visualization.
  • Send to Printer: Direct 1-click upload to configured Moonraker / Klipper printers.
