Summary

  • libva < 2.22 (vaMapBuffer2) compatibility: Export dynamic symbols from openscreen-pipewire-helper and provide a dlsym bridge in ffmpeg_accessors.c (supporting both x86_64 GLIBC_2.2.5 and aarch64 GLIBC_2.17) that forwards vaMapBuffer2 to vaMapBuffer when vaMapBuffer2 is absent (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with libva 2.20). This allows h264_vaapi hardware encoding to initialize instead of falling through to the failing h264_vulkan path.
  • Multi-GPU DRM render-node probing: Honor OPENSCREEN_LINUX_RENDER_NODE and probe /dev/dri/renderD128..renderD135 across the full VA-API device, frame pool, VPP graph, and codec setup in dmabuf_import.rs, encoder.rs, and pipeline_linux.rs.
  • Linux preview readback cap: Proportionally scale Linux preview rectangles down to OPENSCREEN_LINUX_PREVIEW_MAX_DIM (default 854, rounded down to even dimensions) in compositorViewService.ts to reduce CPU readback and IPC overhead during editing.
  • Linux X11 dynamic HUD sizing: Reserve compact tooltip height (86px stack reserve) when no popover is open on Linux so the non-click-through HUD window does not block desktop clicks, and toggle setResizable(true/false) around setBounds on Linux so X11 window managers (Mutter) honor dynamic resize when popovers open or close.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Linux VA-API setup now supports a vaMapBuffer2 compatibility shim and retries configured or available render nodes across compositor encoding, capture encoding, and DMA-BUF import.

Changes: Linux VA-API setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
VA-API symbol compatibility
electron/native/pipewire-capture/build.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/csrc/ffmpeg_accessors.c, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/encoder.rs
The capture build exports dynamic symbols. The C shim can provide vaMapBuffer2 by forwarding to vaMapBuffer, and the VA-API probe accepts either symbol.
Encoder render-node retries
crates/compositor/src/pipeline_linux.rs, electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/encoder.rs
The compositor and capture encoders try configured or available render nodes. They continue to another candidate when device setup or encoder initialization fails.
DMA-BUF importer render-node retries
electron/native/pipewire-capture/src/dmabuf_import.rs
The importer tries configured or available render nodes. It continues after setup failures and returns the first successful importer or the last error.

Limit render-node probing to VA-API.

The Vulkan attempt also runs the DRM render-node loop, and FFmpeg rejects every render-node path by name. Each path after a failed default Vulkan attempt creates and tears down a Vulkan instance. Gate the candidate list on device_type == ff::AV_HWDEVICE_TYPE_VAAPI, so Vulkan keeps its single default attempt.

Try the next render node when H.264 setup fails after VA-API derivation.

The loop stops at the first node that derives VA-API. Failures in frame-context setup, VPP setup, or avcodec_open2 return None without trying later nodes. On hybrid GPU hosts, export then falls back to software encoding. Retry the full open sequence per node, with cleanup between attempts.

Compact the Linux allocation for collapsed vertical trays.

On Linux, a collapsed vertical tray still reserves the full popover and modal height above the bar. The HUD never sends ignore=true on Linux, so that empty area receives clicks meant for the desktop. Extend the compact collapsed allocation to vertical trays after checking the space that vertical tooltips and notices need.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

attach_hardware stops probing once device creation succeeds, before frame-pool initialization or avcodec_open2. A first GPU that can create a VA-API device but cannot encode the requested video prevents trying a later usable render node.

Recording falls through the backend ladder to Vulkan or software rather than using available VA-API encoding.

This can occur when: The default or first candidate creates a VA-API device but fails later encoder setup, while /dev/dri/renderD129 can complete setup.

The dlsym interposer can return NULL for every lookup on aarch64 glibc.

On aarch64, the base dlsym symbol version is GLIBC_2.17, not GLIBC_2.2.5. resolve_real_dlsym() only tries GLIBC_2.2.5. If both dlvsym calls fail, real_dlsym_fn stays NULL. The exported dlsym then returns NULL for every name, including vaMapBuffer2 and vaMapBuffer. vaapi_is_safe_to_probe() then returns false, so VA-API is skipped on a device that may be usable.

Resolve the delegate with the architecture's base version, or fall back to an unversioned lookup. Keep the GLIBC_2.2.5 path for x86_64.

Retry the next render node when avcodec_open2 fails.

attach_hardware moves to the next render node only when device or frame-pool setup fails. avcodec_open2 runs after attach_hardware returns. If it fails on the selected node, open moves to the next LADDER backend, so a later VA-API node that can encode H.264 is never tried. Run the open attempt per node, or treat an avcodec_open2 failure as a reason to try the next node.

Fall back to the scanned render nodes when the override fails.

When OPENSCREEN_LINUX_RENDER_NODE is set, the importer's candidate list holds only that node. If that node is missing or fails DRM/VAAPI setup, DmabufImporter::new returns an error, and dmabuf capture does not start, even when /dev/dri/renderD128 works. The encoder and compositor paths try the override first and then scan the other nodes. Apply the same order here.

Collapsed vertical Linux trays drop the width that right-side tooltips need.

With the popover closed, a vertical tray on Linux gets required.width (408 px for a bar up to 360 px wide). The popover-open branch and the previous collapsed branch both granted 240 px more. Vertical tooltips open to the right of a centred bar, and the tooltip can be up to 260 px wide. With the narrower window, tooltip text wider than the space beside the bar extends past the BrowserWindow edge and is clipped.

Keep the horizontal reserve for vertical trays. Horizontal trays are unchanged.

Update the collapsed Linux width calculation in the `granted` branch to retain
the existing horizontal reserve for vertical trays, using the appropriate width

Thanks a lot @PyVoyager, this is a really useful batch, and the hybrid AMD test setup is exactly what we can't reproduce here. 🙏

Lint: the only error is a formatting one, src/components/launch/LaunchWindow.tsx:472-474 (Biome wants the orientationChanged condition on one line). npm run format fixes it; the rest are pre-existing warnings.

Could you split this into three PRs? They land under different rules on our side:

  • (a) libva shim + multi-GPU render-node probing: pure bug fix, no visible change. This one can move fast once lint is green.
  • (b) X11 dynamic HUD sizing: UI behaviour, so it goes through a maintainer check.
  • (c) 854 px preview readback cap: changes what the preview renders, so it needs a before/after measurement (frame time or CPU in the editor, same project, cap on vs off) in the PR.

What I checked on (a): I compiled the shim on Ubuntu 24.04.2 with gcc 13.3 and the stock libva 2.20 (which exports only vaMapBuffer). dlsym(libva, "vaMapBuffer2") returns the shim, vaMapBuffer and libc lookups are untouched, unknown symbols still return NULL. 👍 Two small notes:

  • Overriding dlsym process-wide changes RTLD_NEXT for every caller (it now resolves relative to the helper, not the calling library). Probably harmless here, but worth a comment in the code, or a narrower hook if you see a way.
  • gcc warns on name && (-Wnonnull-compare), and the fallback returns -1; VA_STATUS_ERROR_UNKNOWN would be clearer.

Two CodeRabbit threads are still open on the current head (render-node override fallback in dmabuf_import.rs, vertical tray width in LaunchWindow.tsx), plus the older aarch64 one, which your second commit seems to address and could be resolved.

Thanks again, looking forward to (a)!

Thanks @PyVoyager, this is a really useful set of fixes. I ran an A/B of c61448e against main (8f00d51) on a Linux laptop: Ubuntu 24.04, AMD Mendocino (radeonsi, single renderD128), libva 2.20.0, GNOME Wayland session.

vaMapBuffer2 shim (helper): ok

  • main: vaapi unavailable: libva.so.2 does not export vaMapBuffer2, so the helper falls back to Vulkan.
  • PR: selected backend: vaapi. The 1080p60 encoder smoke clip (ladder_encodes_a_playable_mp4, 120 frames) decodes cleanly with ffprobe and ffmpeg.
  • Encoding speed is the same: 86 fps on main, 90 fps with the PR.

Export: ok, unchanged

  • 1080p30 export of a 10 s 1080p60 clip through run_composited_multi, 3 runs each. Both sides use h264_vaapi on renderD128.
  • Median time is 3.17 s on main and 3.10 s with the PR, within ±5%.
  • The output MP4s are byte-identical, so the 854 px cap stays out of export.

Not covered

  • X11 HUD sizing: this machine runs a Wayland session.
  • Multi-GPU probing: this machine has a single render node. I only confirmed that renderD128 is still picked.
  • Real 15 s portal recording and preview cap (cadence/resolution): both need a full app build, and the box didn't have the disk space for one. The encoder path was exercised through the cargo test above, not through a live capture.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…U VA-API probing

- Add a dynamic shim in ffmpeg_accessors.c forwarding vaMapBuffer2 to vaMapBuffer
on libva < 2.22 (such as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with libva 2.20.0).
- Probe candidate DRM render nodes (/dev/dri/renderD128..135) with fallback in
dmabuf_import.rs, encoder.rs, and pipeline_linux.rs for hybrid GPU systems.
- Gate render node candidate discovery in encoder.rs to VA-API only.
- Support OPENSCREEN_LINUX_RENDER_NODE override with automatic fallback.

Hi @EtienneLescot,

Thank you so much for the thorough review and for running the A/B test on your machine!

Per your suggestion, we have split the changes into three focused PRs:

  1. This PR (fix(linux): libva < 2.22 vaMapBuffer2 shim and multi-GPU VA-API probing #1476) now exclusively contains (a) the libva compatibility shim + multi-GPU render-node probing:

    • vaMapBuffer2 fallback now cleanly returns VA_STATUS_ERROR_UNKNOWN instead of -1.
    • Removed name && in dlsym strcmp, resolving the GCC -Wnonnull-compare compiler warning.
    • Added an explanatory code comment regarding process-wide dlsym and RTLD_NEXT resolution in the helper.
    • Fixed render-node fallback in dmabuf_import.rs so candidate discovery continues to scan nodes if OPENSCREEN_LINUX_RENDER_NODE is invalid.
    • Gated DRM candidate iteration in encoder.rs to VA-API only.
    • Retained glibc symbol version compatibility for both x86_64 (GLIBC_2.2.5) and aarch64 (GLIBC_2.17).
  2. (b) X11 dynamic HUD sizing is now in fix(linux): dynamic X11 HUD sizing and click-through prevention #1486 (includes the Biome single-line formatting fix and vertical tray width reserve).

  3. (c) 854 px preview readback cap is now in perf(linux): cap compositor preview readback dimensions #1487 (includes before/after frame time and CPU measurements).

Looking forward to your review!

Synchronize the interposer’s function pointers.

Concurrent dlsym calls can race while resolve_real_dlsym() initializes real_dlsym_fn. The fallback lookup and vaMapBuffer2 shim also access real_vaMapBuffer_fn without synchronization. These races are undefined behavior, even when both threads write the same value. Synchronize all accesses to both pointers.
