fix(linux): dynamic X11 HUD sizing and click-through prevention - #1486
Dynamic HUD resizing on Linux X11: Dynamically resize the HUD overlay window between collapsed (compact tooltip height) and expanded states when popovers/menus open and close. This prevents the non-click-through HUD window from blocking desktop mouse clicks while collapsed under X11 (GNOME Mutter).
Vertical tray tooltip clearance: Maintain horizontal width reserve in collapsed mode for vertical trays so localized/multi-line tooltips are not clipped.
Window manager resize hint: Temporarily toggle resizability in electron/windows.ts around setBounds on Linux X11 so window managers honor dynamic size updates.
Biome formatting: Formatted LaunchWindow.tsx single-line conditions to adhere to project style.

Linux HUD allocation now accounts for popover state and toast height. Linux HUDs start at 760×190, and Electron temporarily enables resizing when applying HUD bounds. HUD tooltips select a side based on available display space, and multi-line tooltip content can shrink to fit its visible text.
LaunchWindow initializes Linux HUD state from the platform and tracks popover state and toast height. Linux sizing uses a collapsed reserve of at least 86 px or the toast height, applies minimum dimensions, and reserves the larger popover or modal height while a popover is open.
Linux HUD bounds updates electron/windows.ts
Linux HUD bounds updates temporarily enable resizing around setBounds. Reclamping and resize updates use this helper. The initial Linux HUD size is 760×190; other platforms retain 820×560.
Horizontal HUD tooltips use the top side. Vertical HUD tooltips use the right side unless the available display space is insufficient, in which case they use the left. Clearance calculations support the left side.
Multi-line tooltip boxes can shrink to the longest visible text line plus padding and borders. The sizing function excludes hidden accessibility text and accounts for the opening animation scale.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1406: Both PRs change Linux HUD sizing around floating content. #1406 moves panels and toasts to a separate window; #1486 adjusts HUD sizing around in-window popovers and toasts.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1476: #1486 is a follow-up split from #1476. Both address Linux HUD sizing and temporarily toggling resizability around setBounds.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 996e0
On Linux, the collapsed HUD can still block clicks on the desktop beside the bar. Vertical tooltips may also be clipped. Review the width reserves before merging, or accept the trade-off explicitly.

Autofix · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts
Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
One thing before CI goes green: LaunchWindow.tsx now calls getPlatform() but doesn't import it (it lives in src/utils/platformUtils.ts), so the typecheck should fail. Since isLinuxHud is already resolved from the native bridge, you could also just use isLinuxHud alone.
Also, the comment you removed explained why the window always reserves the full popover height: growing the bottom-anchored window when a popover opens makes the content jump for a frame or two. On Linux that trade-off is probably worth it (blocked desktop clicks are worse), but could you keep a short version of that comment next to the new collapsed branch so the reason survives?

We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The fixed 190-pixel Linux starting height, also used as the collapsed allocation minimum in LaunchWindow, can exceed a very short display's work area. The geometry calculation's available-height ceiling cannot reduce that minimum.
The HUD may extend outside the work area or have its bar and controls clipped by native size constraints.
This can occur when: A Linux HUD opens on a small or remotely configured display whose available height is below 190 pixels.

When the Linux tray is vertical and its popovers are closed, it still requests at least 648px of width. The transparent space beside the bar intercepts desktop clicks. Size the collapsed window for the bar, tooltips, and any visible notices instead of retaining the full growth reserve.

Switched to using isLinuxHud directly without calling getPlatform().
Added the explanatory comment retaining the rationale behind the trade-off (accepting the transient expansion jump on Linux so the collapsed window does not block desktop mouse clicks).
- Dynamically resize HUD window on Linux X11 when popovers/menus open and close,
preventing full-screen/center click blocking while collapsed.
- Keep horizontal width reserve for vertical collapsed tray to avoid tooltip clipping.
- Temporarily toggle window resizability around setBounds on X11 so window managers
honor bounds changes with fixed WM_NORMAL_HINTS.
Thanks for the quick follow-up! CI is approved and running. Two CodeRabbit threads are still open on LaunchWindow.tsx: the collapsed Linux height doesn't include visible toasts, and the collapsed vertical tray still requests ~648px of width, which keeps intercepting desktop clicks beside the bar. Could you take a look at both?
Collapsed Linux height with toasts: stackMaxHeight now accounts for the measured toast stack height (Math.max(86, hudToastsHeightRef.current)), growing when toasts appear and shrinking back down when they disappear.
Collapsed vertical HUD width: For the vertical tray layout when collapsed, width now allocates required.width rather than retaining the oversized computed.granted.width (which included growth reserve and requested ~648px), preventing desktop click interception beside the bar.
Biome formatting: Fixed the ternary formatting in LaunchWindow.tsx so the Biome check passes cleanly.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Keep vertical tooltips inside the collapsed HUD.
When a Linux tray is vertical, required.width can be 408px. The centred bar then leaves less than 177px on either side, but HudTooltip opens beside the bar and permits 260px-wide content. Longer localized tooltips can be clipped by the window. Constrain vertical tooltip width to the available space, or reserve enough width for the tooltip without restoring the full popover reserve. Replace the hard-coded 260 with a shared constant.
The value 260 duplicates the max-w-[260px] class in src/components/ui/tooltip.tsx. If one value changes, the left/right flip decision will use a wrong tooltip width. Export a TOOLTIP_MAX_WIDTH_PX constant from tooltip.tsx. Use it here.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Keep the collapsed horizontal width close to the required width.
When the horizontal bar needs 648px, computed.granted.width requests 888px. The additional 240px is transparent but still intercepts desktop clicks on Linux. Horizontal tooltips open above the bar, so they do not need this side reserve. Keep the 760px floor, but use required.width when the bar exceeds it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
