feat(status-pages): themeable public page with a live editor preview - #1938
Customer status pages, 6/6: themeable public page with a live preview
Theme (StatusPageTheme, stored per page in status_pages.theme and published in the snapshot)
Preset:default, mono, midnight or paper. Each defines a light and a dark token set.
Appearance:auto follows the visitor's light/dark preference; light and dark force one.
Overrides:accent, background, text, card, border (hex). In auto only the accent applies, because one background can't fit both modes. In light and dark all of them apply.
radius: none, sm, md or lg.
font: sans, serif or mono.
Status colours (operational, degraded, partial, major, maintenance) always come from the preset, so red always reads as an outage.
Safety and readability
The service lowercases and validates every value.
It rejects any theme whose text falls below WCAG AA (4.5:1) on the background or on cards, with a message such as "Text on the background has a contrast of 4.48:1; it needs at least 4.5:1."
The renderer re-checks the theme before any value reaches CSS. Out-of-schema values fall back to the defaults and every colour goes through safeColor, so even a corrupted snapshot can only emit known values.
Data:brand_color is replaced by theme. The migration adds the column, copies any valid brand_color into theme.accent, then drops the old column. In v2, theme replaces brand_color; create and update accept any subset of its fields.
Editor: Settings gets an Appearance section:
preset swatch cards;
an Auto/Light/Dark control;
colour fields, disabled in Auto, whose placeholders show the preset's colours;
corner and font selects;
an inline contrast warning that blocks saving.
Next to it, a live preview renders the real public page with the same @maple/status-page renderer the status Worker uses, in a script-less sandboxed iframe. It updates as you edit, and in Auto it has a preview-only Light/Dark toggle. The renderer adds about 7.5 KB gzipped to web, not counting effect and @maple/domain, which web already loads.
Tests
domain status-page: 24, covering preset resolution, overrides ignored in auto, and WCAG pairs (#777777 on white = 4.48:1, fails);
backend service and snapshot builder: 22, covering validation, lowercasing and contrast rejection;
api v2 status pages: 8; domain OpenAPI: 40;
renderer: 23, covering forced dark without the media query, radius and font, hostile values dropped, and auto ignoring overrides;
apps/status: 30;
web status pages: 39, covering Auto disabling the overrides, an unreadable pair blocking save, and the preview reflecting a changed accent;
db parity: 5.
Typecheck is clean across domain, db, backend, status-page, apps/status, api, ai, web and the alchemy stack. oxlint and oxfmt are clean, and knip adds nothing.
Screenshots (renderer output and the editor via a lab page; not yet on a live preview, see below)
Midnight, dark
Paper, serif, large corners
Mono font, square, red accent
Editor: Appearance section and live preview, and the contrast check blocking save.
Not preview-tested: five open PRs already hold preview labels and the shared Tinybird workspace is at its branch limit, so a preview for this PR would fail at "Create/refresh Tinybird PR branch". The rest of the stack was tested live on #1932's preview.

Walkthrough
Status pages now use a structured theme instead of a single brand color. Theme values flow through the API, database, snapshots, and renderer. The editor adds theme controls, validation, and a sandboxed live preview.
Changes: Status-page theme
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Theme model and API contract packages/domain/src/status-page.ts, packages/domain/src/status-page.test.ts, packages/domain/src/http/status-pages.ts, packages/domain/src/http/v2/status-pages.ts
The domain defines theme presets, resolution, and contrast checks. API schemas expose full themes and partial create/update parameters. Older snapshots without a theme decode with the default.
The database stores a JSONB theme and the migration copies valid legacy colors into the accent. The service validates and normalizes themes; API create and update paths merge supplied values with defaults or current values. Records, snapshots, and responses carry the theme.
Theme rendering and preview snapshots packages/status-page/src/*, apps/web/package.json
The renderer sanitizes and resolves themes into CSS variables and theme-based styles. A preview snapshot helper builds component statuses and history from draft data and incidents.
Editor theme state and validation apps/web/src/page/alerts/status-pages/editor/form.ts, form.test.ts, message.ts, model.ts, update-settings.ts, update.ts, editor.scene.test.ts
The editor stores theme fields in settings, normalizes and validates colors, checks contrast, and submits theme data. Page and incident fetch completions also refresh the editor clock.
Appearance controls and live preview apps/web/src/page/alerts/status-pages/editor/view-appearance.ts, view-settings.ts, view-incidents.ts, editor.scene.test.ts
The settings view adds preset, appearance, color, radius, and font controls alongside a sandboxed preview. The preview uses draft values and supports light or dark selection for Auto appearance.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review dd48f
The database migration for the new status-page theme looks sound. Two earlier minor concerns about the editor's live preview remain open: it can show an outage as operational when status reads fail, and it can keep ended scheduled maintenance that the public page omits. These affect only the editor preview, not the published page, and should be addressed or explicitly accepted.

Preview test: themes set in the dashboard reach the live page
Run on the preview:web deploy (pr-1938) by a separate agent with no context from this work. It drove the dashboard with headless Playwright, then read computed styles off the public page served by the status Worker.

Fixed after the run (6c0a0cffc):
Unreadable accent. An accent saved on Midnight carried over to Paper and rendered links at 1.88:1. The accent now applies only in a mode where it reads at 4.5:1 on that background, and falls back to the text colour elsewhere. In Auto that usually means one of the two modes.
Light-preset status text below AA. On the light presets (Default, Mono, Paper), operational, degraded and partial text was below 4.5:1 (degraded was 3.05:1 on Default). Those shades are darker now, and a test checks every preset's status colours against its background and cards.
Future-dated relative times in the editor. The editor read the clock once, so times could read "in 1m". It now re-reads the clock on every fresh page or incident load.
Duplicate id in the incident dialog. The Title input shared its id with the dialog heading; the input has its own id now.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Exclude scheduled maintenance after its end time.
If maintenance remains scheduled after scheduled_end, resolved_at is null, so this filter keeps it in the preview indefinitely. The public snapshot builder excludes it once scheduled_end passes. Apply the same end-time check here so the preview does not show maintenance that visitors cannot see. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

When the monitor read has no data, monitorsOf(model) returns []. previewDocument then assigns null to a linked component's monitorStatus, and deriveComponentStatus treats any status other than "down" as "operational". Component and incident reads can also fall back to empty arrays, producing an incomplete preview. The settings tab marks itself ready without checking these reads and always renders previewPanel.
Render a loading or error state until the component, monitor, and incident reads have data. Do not label an incomplete snapshot as live.

Warning
Status labels drop to ~1.3:1 on an overridden card colour
F6 · Warning · correctness
.components now paints var(--card) from the card override, but .status still takes the preset's status colours, which themeContrastIssue only checks against the preset card. Light appearance with card: "#7a7a7a" passes validation (text on the card is 4.61:1) yet paints "Operational" at 1.26:1 and degradation at 1.23:1 — the page stops showing that anything is wrong.
In `resolveStatusPageTheme`, treat the status colours like `muted`: verify them against the resolved `bg` and `card` and fall back to a readable variant, or have `themeContrastIssue` reject a card that makes them unreadable.

Warning
Partial theme PATCH merges a stale read and drops a concurrent edit
F7 · Warning · correctness
The merge uses the row read at apps/api/src/routes/v2/status-pages.http.ts:216, and service.update writes the whole jsonb column with no revision check. Two PATCHes touching different theme fields at once ({preset}, {radius}) both return 200, and the later write discards the earlier one's field.
Merge the supplied keys in SQL (`theme = theme || $patch`) or compare-and-swap on `revision` so a stale merge is rejected.

…cing brand_color
StatusPageTheme (preset, appearance, colour overrides, radius, font) with a pure resolver to
CSS tokens and a WCAG AA contrast check. The migration carries brand_color into theme.accent.
Create and update take a theme: hex colours lower-cased, unreadable text refused with the
contrast ratio. The snapshot publishes it, and v2 replaces brand_color with a theme object
whose omitted fields keep their current values.
…the editor
baseStyles takes the resolved theme: one forced token set or both behind the media query,
radius on cards, banners and bars, the font stack on body. Every value is re-checked
before it reaches CSS. previewSnapshot builds a snapshot from editor data.
Preset cards, a Light/Dark/Auto mode, colour overrides (disabled in Auto), corners and font,
all in the settings draft and save bar. Unreadable text shows its contrast and blocks the
save. A sandboxed iframe renders the public page from the draft, with a preview-only mode
toggle for Auto pages.
