feat(api): abort-signal wiring for lm-studio and qwen-code (round 2) - #1309
Closes#404
Refs issue 616 (non-closing, unlinked by design) - this unit delivers the LM Studio and Qwen Code portion; the remaining providers stay open in that issue
Refs issue 617 (non-closing, unlinked by design) - covered by the openai-family unit of this series
Refs issue 618 (non-closing, unlinked by design) - covered by the vscode-lm/gemini/mistral unit of this series
Description
Round 2 of the abort-signal series: wires the caller's abort signal through the request paths of two more providers, LM Studio and Qwen Code, so that a Stop pressed in the UI actually cancels the in-flight provider request and surfaces a normalized abort error (per the Task.ts contract: name = "AbortError", message ending in "aborted" — no trailing period).
RequestConfigBuilder is adopted from the start (generic RequestConfigBuilder only — no SDK-extended variant classes). The builder and utils/abort-signal.ts are untouched (foundation contract frozen).
src/api/providers/lm-studio.ts
createMessage: pre-aborted fast-fail via throwIfAborted; request-local AbortController (never a class field) bridged from metadata?.abortSignal with a named listener removed in finally; the signal is passed to the OpenAI SDK via RequestConfigBuilder.setOption("signal", ...).build(); any abort surfaced by the SDK or caught downstream is normalized to a fresh AbortError before handleOpenAIError or the debug-message wrap (both would otherwise strip the abort identity).
completePrompt: same normalization; the signal is built with mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(options?.abortSignal, options?.timeoutMs) and passed through setOption("signal", ...) — the builder's setAbortSignal is unusable here because CompletePromptOptions is not an ApiHandlerCreateMessageMetadata (workaround G7, documented; not fixed — the builder is frozen). timeoutMs <= 0 yields no signal at all (G5: the util already drops non-positive timeouts, so no SDK option is passed — covered by test).
src/api/providers/qwen-code.ts
createMessage / completePrompt: same wiring as LM Studio (request-local controller + named listener + finally cleanup; builder via setOption).
Audit finding fixed: the 401 token-refresh retry path now respects the abort signal in callApiWithRetry:
an aborted request is never retried — a normalized abort is thrown;
a stop landing while refreshAccessToken is awaited is re-checked after the refresh and the retried request is not sent;
a successful refresh with no abort retries, reusing the captured request options, so the retry carries the same signal (verified by test).
Review-driven fixes
isRequestAborted (both providers): the message heuristic is now an exact match on the OpenAI SDK's abort error text ("Request was aborted.") instead of a substring check, so unrelated errors that merely mention "abort" are no longer classified as user cancellations.
createMessage finally (both providers): the request-local controller is now aborted in the finally block, so stopping stream iteration early (break/return) cancels the in-flight SDK request instead of leaving it running.
Existing specs updated to the new SDK call shape: the createMessage assertions expect the request options (with the request-local AbortSignal) as the second argument — same idiom as the new qwen-code-native-tools.spec.ts — and the no-signal completePrompt assertion expects an undefined second argument. Two focused coverage regression tests were added: a reasoning_content streaming test in lm-studio-timeout.spec.ts, and a degenerate-stream-shapes test in qwen-code-native-tools.spec.ts (empty choice, repeated content chunk, empty leading think segment, zeroed usage) that closes the branch partials codecov reported on qwen-code.ts.
Notes
Minimal local type OpenAiRequestOptions = { signal?: AbortSignal } per provider because the SDK's RequestOptions.signal is AbortSignal | null | undefined, which does not satisfy the builder's signal?: AbortSignal constraint; the built config remains assignable to the SDK call.
No fixes to pre-existing out-of-scope bugs (noted where relevant in the specs).
This branch is STACKED on #1288: the foundation commit e61feb1 (generic RequestConfigBuilder, mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, mergeAbortSignals, throwIfAborted) rides inside by design; if #1288 lands first, rebase to drop it.
Test Procedure
pnpm --dir src exec vitest run api/providers/tests/lm-studio-timeout.spec.ts api/providers/tests/qwen-code-native-tools.spec.ts api/providers/tests/lmstudio.spec.ts api/providers/tests/lmstudio-native-tools.spec.ts — all green. Per-provider "abort signal wiring" suites cover: signal identity at every create site (request-local, not the external signal) and live bridging on external.abort(), no-signal calls, pre-aborted fast-fail (SDK never called), in-flight abort normalization, mid-stream abort normalization, non-abort errors still wrapped/rethrown unchanged; completePrompt: pass-through vs AbortSignal.any merge vs zero-timeout no-op, pre-aborted fast-fail, SDK abort + AbortError/APIUserAbortError name normalization, and for Qwen Code: 401-retry same-signal and no-retry-when-aborted-during-refresh (fetch stubbed).
100% changed-line coverage on both provider files, verified by cross-referencing v8/lcov (generated from the two new spec files above) against every added line of git diff origin/main...HEAD: every executable added line has hit count >= 1 (no DA:L,0); lines absent from lcov are blank/comment/type lines only. Per file: lm-studio.ts 35/35 executable added lines covered, qwen-code.ts 65/65. Branch-level cross-reference of the same lcov: the 5 branch partials codecov had reported on qwen-code.ts at the previous head (lines 328, 338, 344, 398, 399) are all covered by the new degenerate-shapes test (0 partial-coverage added lines); the only remaining partials in the two-spec lcov are the false sides of the two isRequestAborted guards in lm-studio.ts (lines 173, 250), which the existing lm-studio error-path specs exercise (verified locally: both guard branches taken when the full lm-studio spec set runs with coverage).
Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (abort-signal wiring for the LM Studio and Qwen Code providers only; the two providers and their specs).
Self-Review: I have performed a thorough self-review of my code.

Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): N/A — no UI changes.
Documentation Impact: I have considered if my changes require documentation updates (see "Documentation Updates" section below).
Yes, documentation updates are required. (Please describe what needs to be updated or link to a PR in the docs repository.)
Additional Notes
Part of the abort-signal series (round 2). Builds on #674, #901, #1008, and #1288. Addresses #404.
Updated this round (2026-10-13)
Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict (imports only) in lm-studio.ts: main added the model-cache interface (fetchModels/getModelCacheScope, auto-merged) which needs the ModelCacheScope type import and the getLMStudioModels fetcher import; this branch added the RequestConfigBuilder and abort-signal utility imports. Kept both sides' imports.
Verification at this head: 159/159 green across the seven touched specs (lm-studio, lm-studio-timeout, lmstudio, lmstudio-native-tools, qwen-code, qwen-code-native-tools, abort-signal); tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Updated this round (2026-10-13, pre-merge check fixes)
Linked Issues (ERROR): removed the Closes #616 claim — this unit delivers only the LM Studio + Qwen Code portion of feat(api): abort signal pass-through for simple providers #616, now referenced non-closing (Refs #616). Closes #404 stands (fully delivered).
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup (WARNING): settleOnAbort no longer leaks its abort listener when the abort fires first — a single cleanup function detaches the exact registered listener at most once, called from the abort callback and from the pending promise's fulfillment/rejection handlers. New test aborts with a never-settling pending promise and asserts the abort callback itself removes the listener (negative control: removing the cleanup call fails exactly that test).
Regression Evidence (WARNING): added the focused test for LmStudioHandler.completePrompt's pre-aborted-signal fast-fail — already-aborted signal rejects with the contract AbortError and chat.completions.create is never called (negative control: removing the throwIfAborted guard fails exactly that test).
Verification at this head (9c7faba): 67/67 green across abort-signal.spec.ts and lm-studio.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with suppression counts unchanged; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Updated this round (2026-10-13, second follow-up)
Listener-removal assertions now pin the exact function reference per the path instruction (CR suggestions applied verbatim): the lm-studio createMessage registration test captures the listener from addSpy and asserts removeSpy was called with that reference; the settleOnAbort rejection-propagation test uses the same addSpy.mock.calls[0]?.[1] pattern as the file's other cleanup tests.
Verification at this head (3b998a5): 67/67 green across abort-signal.spec.ts and lm-studio.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Updated this round (2026-10-13, third follow-up - pre-merge warnings + test-fidelity threads)
Linked Issues (ERROR, evolved): Closes #617/Closes #618 converted to unlinked, non-closing prose (those issues are delivered by sibling units of this series). closingIssuesReferences now returns [BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404 only (GraphQL-verified).
Regression Evidence (WARNING): settleOnAbort's already-aborted early return now attaches a no-op rejection guard to the pending promise (void pending.catch(() => {})), closing the unhandled-rejection exposure; new test with a process.on("unhandledRejection") listener proves zero leaks while the abort error surfaces (negative control verified).
Lifecycle Resource Cleanup (WARNING): QwenCodeHandler now shares the in-flight credential-load promise (same pattern as the existing shared refresh), cleared in a finally once the load settles - a cancelled first request no longer makes a second request duplicate credential I/O, and a failed load is retried by the next request. Two new tests pin reuse and both clearing paths (negative control verified).
Test-fidelity threads: the two qwen-code-native-tools 401-refresh tests now abort only after the refresh wait is established (never-settling fetch + drain) instead of synchronously inside the fetch mock; the two qwen-code listener tests assert the exact registered listener reference is removed.
Verification at this head (dc09b59): 128/128 green across abort-signal.spec.ts, qwen-code.spec.ts, qwen-code-native-tools.spec.ts and lm-studio.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with suppression counts unchanged; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Updated this round (2026-10-13, fourth follow-up - final pre-merge warning)
Regression Evidence (WARNING): added focused coverage for LmStudioHandler.createMessage early consumer termination - the test consumes one chunk from an SDK stream that then stays pending, calls stream.return(), and asserts the request-local SDK AbortSignal becomes aborted and the exact registered external abort listener is removed (by reference, per the established pattern). Negative control: removing the finally-block abort fails exactly this test (isolated run).
Verification at this head (f621443): 27/27 green in lm-studio.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with suppression counts unchanged; prettier --check clean on the touched file.
Updated this round (2026-10-13, fifth follow-up - premature-abort pin)
The early-termination test now asserts the request-local SDK signal is still live (aborted === false) after the first chunk and before stream.return(), retaining the post-return aborted assertion - closing the premature-abort blind spot where an abort landing during iteration would also have passed. Negative control: aborting the request-local controller right after the SDK create call fails exactly this test (isolated run).
Verification at this head (9041eb1): 27/27 green in lm-studio.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with suppression counts unchanged; prettier --check clean on the touched file.
abort-signal.ts { once: true } ObjectLiteral/BooleanLiteral: abort fires exactly once per signal; listener also removed in finally - equivalent.
lm-studio/qwen-code pre-abort guards (ConditionalExpression/CallExpression): a pre-aborted external signal is rejected before reaching these lines, so the mutated branches are unreachable - equivalent.
Inner abort throws (StringLiteral): re-normalized by the outer catch's createAbortError, unobservable.
Tool-call bookkeeping lines (ConditionalExpression/EqualityOperator/StringLiteral/ObjectLiteral/CallExpression): the streaming path is exercised through vi.mock()'d SDK modules whose coverage instrumentation does not cross the module boundary, so mutants there report NoCoverage rather than behavior changes; the observable chunk sequence is pinned by the tool-call tests.
qwen-code think-splitting (ConditionalExpression/StringLiteral/EqualityOperator): split(/</?think>/g) yields no tag-free empty parts and the extra loop iteration reads undefined which the branch treats as non-tag - equivalent.
Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
Port of the #1300 CodeRabbit finding to the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout helper: non-finite timeoutMs (Infinity) now means "no timeout" instead of throwing ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE from AbortSignal.timeout, and finite delays are capped at 2^31-1 ms (Node clamps larger delays to 1ms, which aborted requests almost immediately). Regression tests added; negative controls fail exactly the two new tests. Identical helper fix lands in every unit of the abort series (merge-order aware); canonical copy in #1293.
Fractional-timeout rounding wave
Follow-up CR round: Node validates AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5, 0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE like Infinity did. mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout now rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before capping at 2^31-1 ms; regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(undefined, 1.5). Identical helper patch in every unit of the series (merge-order aware, canonical in #1293).
Assertion strengthening (rounding wave follow-up)
The fractional-timeout test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins the received delay (2 for 1.5, 1 for 0.5, never 0) instead of only asserting no-throw plus eventual abort; a round-down mutation (Math.ceil -> Math.floor) fails exactly this test. Identical patch in every unit of the series (canonical in #1293).
Updated 2026-10-22 (head 4f66ae529)
Merged current upstream/main (05d01f33d), clearing has-conflicts.
Dropped two pieces of unrelated branch churn so the diff stays reviewable: (a) the root vitest devDependency + lockfile hunk that only existed to run Stryker locally, (b) ~10 files that had been reformatted by an older Prettier (union-type layout only). Both now match main exactly, leaving the diff at the 11 files this unit actually changes.
Restored the OpenAiRequestOptions type that upstream/main's knip dead-code pass had removed but this unit's lm-studio/qwen-code wiring still imports.
Local proof on the refreshed head: ESLint clean on the changed files, tsc --noEmit clean, vitest run over lm-studio, lm-studio-timeout, lmstudio, lmstudio-native-tools, qwen-code, qwen-code-native-tools, abort-signal specs → 168/168 pass.
…ssion tests
Add a fast-fail throwIfAborted guard to the shared abort-signal utilities and regression tests for the CompletePromptOptions interface (added by Zoo-Code-Org#901).
LM Studio and Qwen Code requests can now be cancelled, including while credentials are loading or refreshing, tokens are being counted, or responses are streaming.
Positive timeouts work alongside caller-provided cancellation signals; zero or negative timeout values do not add a timeout.
Bug Fixes
Cancelled requests stop promptly and return consistent provider-specific errors. Other errors continue through existing error handling.
Qwen Code credential loading and refresh are more reliable when requests are cancelled or fail.
LM Studio and Qwen Code now pass abort signals to SDK requests and normalize cancellation errors. Cancellation is handled during token counting, authentication, streaming, and token refresh. Tests cover signal propagation, timeout behavior, retry handling, and cleanup.
Adds OpenAiRequestOptions and settleOnAbort. Tests cover pre-aborted signals, settlement, rejection, and listener cleanup.

LM Studio bridges caller cancellation to a request-local signal. It handles aborts during token counting and streaming, normalizes abort errors, and removes listeners when requests finish. Tests cover signal forwarding, token usage, reasoning chunks, and native-tool calls.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 2f014
This change wires cancellation through the LM Studio and Qwen Code request paths, and the earlier cancellation concerns appear addressed. One test gap remains: no test covers an elapsed timeout when a caller signal is also set. It is worth adding, but it does not block merging.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to f288d
Cancellation now reaches provider requests and authentication waits while preserving request isolation and shared credential updates. One failure-containment gap remains: cancellation can leave an already-started background operation without rejection handling. The affected scope appears limited, and broader application impact is not established.
Retained concerns
Low · reliability · inferred: The new shared wait helper does not observe its pending promise when the signal is already aborted. LM Studio starts output token counting after yielding buffered output, then passes that promise to the helper; cancellation before this step can therefore leave a later counting failure outside the request's error handling. Entry guards reduce exposure but do not cover this later transition. Host-level consequences remain unverified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified failure-containment exposure concerns provider-side background work after local cancellation. It does not establish privilege gain, cross-tenant access, or a remotely exploitable denial of service; host handling of an unobserved rejection remains unexamined.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Request cancellation and shared authentication have distinct ownership: the caller controls its request signal, while credential refresh continues under provider ownership. Late refresh updates credentials, and subsequent authentication synchronizes the SDK client's key and base URL.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — After an in-flight abort, settleOnAbort continues observing eventual success or failure, but removes its listener only when the underlying promise settles. Qwen's token-refresh fetch has no explicit timeout or cancellation signal in this method; that fetch behavior predates the PR. Permanently pending refreshes therefore remain a bounded-lifetime hardening question rather than a demonstrated new security condition.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make background rejection observation unconditional, including already-aborted exits. Separate request-listener cleanup from shared-work settlement, and consider a provider-owned lifetime bound for refresh work without allowing one caller to cancel other callers' refresh.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(api): abort-signal wiring for lm-studio and qwen-code (round 2)" matches the main change: wiring the caller's abort signal through the LM Studio and Qwen Code request paths, with normalized abort errors and cleanup. It is in Conventional Commits form and under 72 characters. The "(round 2)" suffix refers to the series position and does not describe the change itself, but the title still identifies the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the linked issue, a detailed description of the changes per file, the test procedure, and the pre-submission checklist, so it is mostly complete against the template. It is not fully compliant with the template and the repository's style rules: it uses many non-STE phrases (for example "Round 2 of the abort-signal series", "Review-driven fixes", "workaround G7", and long compound sentences), and it contains contractions-free but dense prose. It also has a long history of update sections that mix review-round notes with the final state. The Get in Touch section is missing, and the Visual Snapshots and Videos sections were removed. The stated test counts also differ between the author's text (159/159, 67/67, 128/128, 168/168) and the most recent round, which makes the verification trail harder to follow. These are non-critical gaps; the core required information (linked issue, description, test procedure, checklist) is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#404] requires Stop to abort the provider request. LM Studio and Qwen Code pass request-local AbortSignal values to the OpenAI SDK, bridge caller cancellation, reject pre-aborted requests, normalize abort errors, and abort on early stream termination. Qwen Code also prevents a cancelled 401 refresh path from issuing an unsafe retry. The PR reports focused regression tests and 168/168 passing checks. Non-closing references to #616, #617, and #618 add no requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed provider code, abort utilities, timeout classification and hardening, credential-load lifecycle handling, retry handling, and focused tests directly support cancellation for [#404]. The lint-suppression removals support the same implementation. No unrelated product behavior or ignored-file dependency is demonstrated.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused coverage is present at the provider and utility layers. LM Studio specs cover request-signal bridging, pre-abort, token-count cancellation, stream cancellation, usage suppression, cleanup, timeout classification, and abort/non-abort errors. Qwen Code specs cover credential-load and refresh cancellation, 401 retry behavior, signal reuse, streaming cancellation, early termination, timeout classification, and abort/non-abort errors. abort-signal.spec.ts covers settleOnAbort for unset, pre-aborted, fulfillment, rejection, listener cleanup, and pending-work cases. The changed files contain no durable UI changes, so no Playwright snapshot is required.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a failure condition. The production changes in src/api/providers/lm-studio.ts, src/api/providers/qwen-code.ts, and src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts add cancellation handling, signal forwarding, retry guards, and shared credential state. They do not add secret or PII logging, dynamic execution, or approval/allowlist bypasses. Qwen credential values remain used for the existing authenticated client and refresh flow.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The only persistence operation is Qwen credential refresh in src/api/providers/qwen-code.ts; fs.writeFile remains awaited, and its failure is explicitly logged while refreshed credentials remain usable in memory. The new credential-load sharing and refresh handling await their promises and do not add an unawaited or corrupting write path. No other changed file adds persistence.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The prior lifecycle leak remains. In changed qwen-code.ts, createMessage and completePrompt race ensureAuthenticated() with settleOnAbort (lines 319 and 479), but settleOnAbort only rejects the caller; its documented behavior leaves the promise running. loadCachedQwenCredentials starts fs.readFile without cancellation (lines 112-121), and doRefreshAccessToken starts fetch without a signal (lines 143-161). credentialLoad and refreshPromise clear only after those operations settle (lines 215-220 and 125-140). The changed tests explicitly keep both operations pending after cancellation (qwen-code.spec.ts lines 436-458 and 460-507). A hung credential read or token endpoint therefore remains active and retains shared state after the request stops. The refresh can also persist credentials after cancellation (lines 182-196).
Resolution
Give shared credential loading and token refresh explicit ownership. Track active waiters and abort fs.readFile and refresh fetch when the last waiter cancels, or enforce a bounded lifetime with cleanup. Clear credentialLoad and refreshPromise when the underlying operation is aborted, and prevent post-cancellation credential writes and retries.

…ess review
CI: platform-unit-test (ubuntu-latest) was failing on four LM Studio spec
assertions that still expected the pre-PR single-argument SDK call shape.
createMessage now calls chat.completions.create(params, { signal }) with the
request-local AbortSignal, and completePrompt passes no options when no
signal/timeout is configured. Update the two existing specs to the same
two-argument assertions used by the new qwen-code-native-tools.spec.ts
(expect.any(AbortSignal) for createMessage, undefined second argument for the
no-signal completePrompt case).
Review: (1) narrow isRequestAborted to an exact match on the OpenAI SDK abort
error text ("Request was aborted.") instead of a substring scan, so unrelated
errors that merely mention "abort" are no longer normalized as user
cancellations; (2) abort the request-local controller in the createMessage
finally block so early stream termination (break/return) cancels the
in-flight SDK request.
If the caller aborts while countTokens is pending, the listener is added after the abort event. The request-local controller remains active, so the SDK request can start without cancellation. Add throwIfAborted(metadata?.abortSignal) before creating the request-local controller.

Changed-line coverage verification against the full PR diff
(git diff origin/main...HEAD) found two executable added lines in
lm-studio.ts uncovered by the PR's spec files: the
reasoning_content/reasoning delta branch of createMessage (upstream main
had since re-based that block into the PR diff). Add a focused streaming
regression test to lm-studio-timeout.spec.ts that exercises the branch,
restoring 100% changed-line coverage on both provider files
(lm-studio.ts 35/35, qwen-code.ts 65/65 executable added lines).
Cover abort during input token counting before merge.
The added cases cover pre-abort and in-flight cancellation, but they do not cover an abort while countTokens() is pending. In src/api/providers/lm-studio.ts, the abort listener is registered only after await this.countTokens(...). If the caller aborts during that await, the request-local controller is not aborted, and chat.completions.create can still start. Add a deferred countTokens() regression test that aborts during the await and asserts that the completion call does not start. Move the signal bridge before the first await or add a post-count abort check so the test passes.
As per coding guidelines, regressions should be tested at the lowest layer that would have failed.

…overage
Codecov's patch report on the previous head flagged 5 partial-coverage
lines in qwen-code.ts (lines 328, 338, 344, 398, 399): the defensive
branches of the createMessage stream loop — a chunk with no choice
(choices[0] ?? fallback), a delta that repeats the previous full content
(empty after trimming), a think block that starts the text (empty leading
split segment), and a zeroed usage payload (prompt_tokens || 0,
completion_tokens || 0).
Add one focused degenerate-stream-shapes test to qwen-code-native-tools
spec covering all five branches in a single stream. Branch-level lcov
cross-reference on the PR's added lines now reports zero partial-coverage
added lines in both provider files, and line-level changed-line coverage
stays 100% (lm-studio.ts 35/35, qwen-code.ts 65/65 executable added
lines).
…o abort-signal utils
The OpenAI-family provider PRs (Zoo-Code-Org#1309, Zoo-Code-Org#1311) carry per-provider copies of the same abort-detection helper (isRequestAborted) and the same abort-error constructor (createAbortError); only the provider name in the message differs. Per the CodeRabbit maintainability finding on Zoo-Code-Org#1309 (extract the shared abort helpers into utils/abort-signal.ts), these are now shared in the foundation utility:
- isRequestAborted(error, signal?) - true when the caller signal fired, a native AbortError / OpenAI SDK APIUserAbortError was raised, or the message is exactly "Request was aborted." (exact match; a substring match would misclassify unrelated errors that merely mention aborting)
- createAbortError(providerName) - fresh error with name === "AbortError" and message "The <providerName> request was aborted", satisfying the Task.ts abort contract
- exported OpenAiRequestOptions type
7 new tests (isRequestAborted 4, createAbortError 3).
…tudio and qwen-code
The per-provider copies of isRequestAborted / createAbortError /
OpenAiRequestOptions were extracted into src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts by foundation PR Zoo-Code-Org#1288 (commit a0117fb) following the CodeRabbit maintainability finding on this PR; the providers now import the shared helpers. createAbortError takes the provider name as a parameter; provider behavior and abort messages are unchanged.
The retry at Line 229 is outside the try/catch that normalizes the first request. If the retry rejects after requestSignal aborts, completePrompt returns the raw SDK abort error because it has no outer normalization catch.
Wrap the retried apiCall() with the same isRequestAborted handling. Add a 401-refresh-retry abort regression test.

@coderabbitai review — the extraction finding on this PR (OpenAiRequestOptions / isRequestAborted / createAbortError duplicated between lm-studio.ts and qwen-code.ts) is now addressed: the shared helpers landed in src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts via the foundation PR #1288 (commit a0117fb), and both providers now import them instead of keeping local copies (commit e57e88b). Provider behavior and abort messages are unchanged. Please re-review the new head.
@easonLiangWorldedtech The shared-helper extraction is verified.
src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts now exports OpenAiRequestOptions, isRequestAborted, and createAbortError. Both provider files import these helpers. Neither provider retains local declarations. The provider-specific abort messages remain LM Studio and Qwen Code.
I will review the current PR head for other issues.

Learning: In the TypeScript OpenAI-compatible provider layer, `OpenAiRequestOptions`, `isRequestAborted`, and `createAbortError` are shared utilities in `src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts`. `src/api/providers/lm-studio.ts` and `src/api/providers/qwen-code.ts` must import these utilities instead of declaring provider-local copies. Provider call sites pass the provider name to `createAbortError`, preserving normalized messages such as `The LM Studio request was aborted` and `The Qwen Code request was aborted`.

After a 401, an abort from the retry bypasses the existing catch. completePrompt() can therefore expose the raw SDK error instead of AbortError. Normalize every retry attempt and add a regression test for a 401 followed by an abort.

…oken counting
CodeRabbit follow-ups on the abort-signal series: an abort landing while the qwen-code 401 retry request is in flight escaped callApiWithRetry as the raw SDK abort error instead of the normalized 'The Qwen Code request was aborted'; the retried apiCall now goes through the same isRequestAborted normalization. In lm-studio createMessage, an abort landing while input token counting is pending was silently dropped (a listener added to an already-aborted signal never fires), so the aborted state is bridged into the request-local controller and throwIfAborted fast-fails before the request is issued. Regression tests cover both paths.

Conflict resolution: keep the branch's abort wiring (lm-studio
isRequestAborted catch classification in createMessage/
completePrompt, completePrompt fast-fail + merged request signal;
qwen-code completePrompt fast-fail, merged signal and
settleOnAbort-wrapped auth wait). Post-merge lint repair for the
re-enabled unused-variable rule: drop the unused countSpy binding
in lm-studio.spec.ts and rename two unread mock args to _opts in
qwen-code-native-tools.spec.ts.
Pre-existing well-formed Stryker directives in lm-studio.ts and
qwen-code.ts are retained: the merged scripts/stryker-diff.mjs
validates directive format as an advisory only, and their mutants
are equivalent; removing them without maintainer gate-config
exclusions would turn equivalent mutants into blocking Survived.
Verification at this merge: 129/129 green across lm-studio,
qwen-code, qwen-code-native-tools and abort-signal specs; tsc
--noEmit 0 errors; eslint --max-warnings=0 clean (suppression
entries for lm-studio-timeout.spec.ts and qwen-code.ts pruned as
stale - both files lint clean without them); prettier clean.

…meout delays
Port of the Zoo-Code-Org#1300 timeout guard finding (CodeRabbit): Node's
AbortSignal.timeout throws ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for non-integer delays
(Infinity) and clamps delays above 2^31-1 ms to 1 ms, so a
non-finite timeoutMs threw a RangeError instead of running the
request, and an overflowing one aborted almost immediately. The
helper now treats non-finite values as "no timeout" and caps
finite delays at 2^31-1 ms.
Regression tests added; negative controls (reverting the guard)
fail exactly the two new tests.
Already reviewed the last commit. Use @coderabbitai full review to rerun a review of the entire changeset.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
CodeRabbit follow-up on the timeout guard: Node validates
AbortSignal.timeout delays as uint32, so finite fractions (1500.5,
0.5) threw ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE just like Infinity did. The helper now
rounds delays up (a positive fraction never becomes 0 ms) before
capping at 2^31-1 ms. Regression test mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout
(undefined, 1.5); negative control (reverting the rounding) fails
exactly that test.
CodeRabbit: the fractional-timeout test only proved the call did
not throw and eventually aborted - a round-down mutation (1.5 -> 1)
would still pass. The test now spies AbortSignal.timeout and pins
the received delay: 2 for 1.5 and 1 for 0.5 (never 0). Negative
control: mutating Math.ceil to Math.floor fails exactly this test.

completePrompt merged the caller signal with the timeout and mapped every abort-shaped failure to AbortError, so a deadline expiry looked like a user stop. Distinguish them via the merged signal reason: TimeoutError when the timer fired while the caller signal stayed live, AbortError for a real cancellation. Applied to both lm-studio and qwen-code (same PR, same contract) with regression tests whose negative controls fail with expected AbortError to be TimeoutError.

Review follow-ups: createTimeoutError/isTimeoutAbort move from qwen-code.ts and lm-studio.ts into utils/abort-signal.ts (providerName stays a createTimeoutError parameter; behavior unchanged) and both providers import them. LM Studio completePrompt selects TimeoutError vs the contract AbortError through one private helper used by the inner create catch and the outer completion catch. The qwen elapsed-timeout test now passes a live caller signal alongside timeoutMs and asserts TimeoutError, and uses mockImplementationOnce so the signal-waiting mock cannot leak into later tests. Contract tests for the shared helpers live in abort-signal.spec.ts. qwen-code + lm-studio + abort-signal suites 111 passed; abort-signal 58 passed; tsc clean.
Shared timeout helpers — createTimeoutError / isTimeoutAbort moved from qwen-code.ts and lm-studio.ts into src/api/providers/utils/abort-signal.ts (providerName stays a createTimeoutError parameter); both providers import them, behavior unchanged. Contract tests for both helpers live in abort-signal.spec.ts.
LM Studio duplicated selection — the inner create catch and the outer completion catch now call one private toCompletionAbortError(requestSignal, callerSignal) helper that picks TimeoutError vs the contract AbortError.
qwen elapsed-timeout test — now passes a live caller abortSignal alongside timeoutMs and asserts the result is TimeoutError while the caller signal stays live.
Leaky mock — that test uses mockImplementationOnce, so the signal-waiting mock cannot affect later tests.

Notes
This branch is STACKED on #1288: the foundation commit e61feb1 (generic RequestConfigBuilder, mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, mergeAbortSignals, throwIfAborted) rides inside by design; if #1288 lands first, rebase to drop it.

Merged current upstream
maininto the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict (imports only) inlm-studio.ts: main added the model-cache interface (fetchModels/getModelCacheScope, auto-merged) which needs theModelCacheScopetype import and thegetLMStudioModelsfetcher import; this branch added theRequestConfigBuilderand abort-signal utility imports. Kept both sides' imports.Verification at this head: 159/159 green across the seven touched specs (lm-studio, lm-studio-timeout, lmstudio, lmstudio-native-tools, qwen-code, qwen-code-native-tools, abort-signal);

Closes #616claim — this unit delivers only the LM Studio + Qwen Code portion of feat(api): abort signal pass-through for simple providers #616, now referenced non-closing (Refs #616).Closes #404stands (fully delivered).settleOnAbortno longer leaks its abort listener when the abort fires first — a single cleanup function detaches the exact registered listener at most once, called from the abort callback and from the pending promise's fulfillment/rejection handlers. New test aborts with a never-settling pending promise and asserts the abort callback itself removes the listener (negative control: removing the cleanup call fails exactly that test).LmStudioHandler.completePrompt's pre-aborted-signal fast-fail — already-aborted signal rejects with the contractAbortErrorandchat.completions.createis never called (negative control: removing thethrowIfAbortedguard fails exactly that test).Verification at this head (9c7faba): 67/67 green across

Closes #617/Closes #618converted to unlinked, non-closing prose (those issues are delivered by sibling units of this series).closingIssuesReferencesnow returns [BUG] Stop does not work on OpenAI Compatible API Provider #404 only (GraphQL-verified).settleOnAbort's already-aborted early return now attaches a no-op rejection guard to the pending promise (void pending.catch(() => {})), closing the unhandled-rejection exposure; new test with aprocess.on("unhandledRejection")listener proves zero leaks while the abort error surfaces (negative control verified).QwenCodeHandlernow shares the in-flight credential-load promise (same pattern as the existing shared refresh), cleared in a finally once the load settles - a cancelled first request no longer makes a second request duplicate credential I/O, and a failed load is retried by the next request. Two new tests pin reuse and both clearing paths (negative control verified).Verification at this head (dc09b59): 128/128 green across

LmStudioHandler.createMessageearly consumer termination - the test consumes one chunk from an SDK stream that then stays pending, callsstream.return(), and asserts the request-local SDKAbortSignalbecomes aborted and the exact registered external abort listener is removed (by reference, per the established pattern). aborted === false) after the first chunk and beforestream.return(), retaining the post-return aborted assertion - closing the premature-abort blind spot where an abort landing during iteration would also have passed. Negative control: aborting the request-local controller right after the SDK create call fails exactly this test (isolated run).Verification at this head (9041eb1): 27/27 green in
lm-studio.spec.ts;tsc --noEmit→ 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean with suppression counts unchanged;prettier --checkclean on the touched file.Stryker directive removal (equivalence notes)
Eighteen directives removed (lm-studio.ts 9, qwen-code.ts 8, utils/abort-signal.ts 1):
{ once: true }ObjectLiteral/BooleanLiteral: abort fires exactly once per signal; listener also removed in finally - equivalent.Timeout guard hardening (helper port)
