Question

Can lance-graph represent its own methods, dependencies, semantic contracts and execution evidence in its existing graph substrate, and then find and check structural optimizations over that representation?

Yes, for one concept and one hop. Here is what that means in practice:

  1. The data. D-CMH-1: class-qualified methods compile into Quack algebra, with no Rust per method #1504's BillableWorkEntry methods are projected into typed rows straight from the MethodTable that prepared them.
  2. The queries. Questions about those rows are ordinary Quack Drafts. They are lowered and run on mask-risc.
  3. The candidate. The rows produced one optimization candidate, H1, with a measured cost gap and an open list of obligations.
  4. The blocker. The first blocker appears exactly where a question needs a second hop.

Constraints held throughout:

Plan: .claude/plans/software-awareness-graph-v1.md.

Inventory, read in code (§1)

  • Bible graph. No seven-language Bible graph exists in code. There are three separate pieces:

    • the English KJV as triples (deepnsm-v2/examples/bible_wave.rs, a TemporalStream with no per-triple provenance);
    • a 6-lane lexeme fixture with 6 rows per lane (probe_babel_stances.rs);
    • German silver labels.

    "9 lanes / 7 languages" appears only in a plan, and that plan retracts it. What carries over is the principle, not the machinery: an identity is separate from its spellings.

  • Method identity. OGAR mints classes and fields. Method keys are issued by the caller, and OGAR mints none. OGAR feat(callcenter): add OGIT + OWL/DOLCE semantic layer foundation #357 exists only as a local branch and is documentation only.

  • dir-sim provenance. Origin, versioned RuleId and a logical clock provide the pattern the graph's tiers follow.

  • "SoC". In this repo it means separation of concerns (about 55 of 88 uses; "system on chip" occurs zero times).

What's in the PR (crates/lance-graph-glove-parity)

  • src/awareness.rs. SoftwareGraph::project(table, specs, claims, source, rev) writes rows for:

    • class, method, field (concept + seal + name), condition and fold (under their reading), law;
    • lowered programs, their mask-risc primitives and lowering();
    • compiler refusals, claim grades, compute edges, capabilities and tests.

    Each edge records its tier (declared / derived / compiled / verified / hypothesis), the method it was written within, and its provenance. A node's kind is its identity prefix: one identity, one kind. SoftwareGraph implements quack::bind::Binder, so methods_using("MaskedSumI32") is just a Draft → ScatterOrU32(ctx), one program.

  • Validation is the compiler's own: the MethodTable::prepare verdicts and class_view::compute_dag_is_acyclic, recorded as REFUSED_FOR edges. The graph adds no rule that could disagree with it.

  • tests/awareness.rs has 16 tests:

    • Projection of billable_hours: class, fields, folds, both programs and their primitives (checked against the real program), claim grades, provenance.
    • Query A (dependency): answers equal to what the programs actually contain.
    • Query B (refusals): under SAP's real claims the graph explains billable_hours' refusal down to claim:hours_logged:hypothesized.
    • Query C (capability status): a capability counts as shipped only if a compiled program uses it, and as demonstrated only from a compiled refusal. FirstOfRun becomes demonstrated through the real NAL EvidenceNotIndependent refusal; the IAM and SAP needs stay hypotheses.
    • Query D (repeated structure): the rows rediscover G1's is_billable as a shared condition, and flag billable_hours rescanning its selection once per fold.
  • examples/awareness_loop.rs runs the loop once: project the methods, query them, generate the H1 candidate, assert both paths give the same answer, time them, and record the timings with their tier.

Falsifiers 1–10

Each fault ends in a typed refusal, a failed invariant or a falsified hypothesis. Each guard was disabled once, and its test went red: 14 disable runs, tree restored after each.

# fault result
1 same label in two classes two field nodes; WrongConcept
2 compute cycle the contract's verdict, recorded
3 same fold under two readings kept apart; ReadingMismatch
4 certificate after a body or seal change StaleBody / StaleSeal
5 bag vs set count different primitives over identical ops
6 fusion vs NULL obligation stays open when a validity plane gates the program
7 faster on one workload, slower on another Mixed, not Improves
8 claimed primitive not in the program ClaimMismatch
9 "shipped" because a method declares it Claimed only
10 timing from one tier asked for on another TierMismatch

What the disable runs found. One disable first stayed green: no test exercised blocked_by's compiled-only guard. Writing that missing case then exposed a real defect: claim decided a node's kind from a narrow prefix check, so a hand-noted refusal became a Capability node that the compiler's refusal later reused. Fixed in eaa58f6 (kind_of).

H1: fuse the predicate into MaskedSumI32

The graph proposes this from the rows: a program with the MaskedSumI32 terminal, lowered Tiled, reading only the live plane.

Measured with awareness_loop: 1,048,576 rows, 51 interleaved reps, answers asserted equal first, on a shared and noisy machine.

build program scalar reference ratio
native (avx512f) 603.5 µs 379.1 µs 1.59
native, rerun 619.6 µs 362.8 µs 1.71
config-v3 617.4 µs 347.6 µs 1.78

Missing pieces. Two, both in mask-risc:

  • fused_ternlog declines any lane Pred;
  • FusedFold covers only Count and Any.

What is not claimed. The scalar loop is a reference for what one pass costs. It is not a fused SIMD terminal, and no speed-up is claimed. The obligations are listed with the candidate.

Entropy and MDL (§5)

The three measures stay separate:

  • structural redundancy;
  • epistemic uncertainty: hypothesized claims, claimed vs demonstrated capabilities, stale certificates;
  • execution cost.

The objective. J = L(P) + L(M|P) + λC is computed with stated assumptions. Correctness, authority, evidence independence and version compatibility are hard constraints, not penalties.

Results:

  • Factoring a single shared condition never shortens the description. So G1's is_billable is semantic reuse (edit once), not syntactic compression. That is a stated limit of a syntax-level measure.
  • A two-condition set shared by three methods does shorten it.
  • The counterexample. Read by label, the same bodies seem to repeat and gain bits; read by typed identity, they gain nothing. This counterexample caught a bug in the first metric, which dropped a composite's atoms from the vocabulary.
  • λC is left unscored for H1. The cost after fusion has not been measured.

Blockers and gaps (§9)

  • Multi-hop. "Methods using X" is one hop because each edge carries its owning method. A second hop would pass a mask from one program to the next, which Quack documents as a forbidden population intermediate. The legal routes are a relation carrier (D-CMH-G1-4) or a factored EqU32Via read. No traversal engine was added to work around it.
  • Method identity is issued by the caller.
  • Body digest. It is FNV over the spec's Debug rendering, stable only within one build. It errs towards stale, never towards falsely fresh.
  • Storage. The graph is held in memory, not as a Lance dataset. The source revision is a string the caller supplies (SAG_REV).

Verification

cd crates/lance-graph-glove-parity
CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0 cargo test           # 63 passed, 0 failed
cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings      # clean
cargo run --release --example awareness_loop # the H1 rows above

Board: the plan, INTEGRATION_PLANS, STATUS_BOARD (D-SAG-1-0..6), an entries file, and the regenerated index.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added software-awareness graphs that organize prepared methods, dependencies, evidence, and compiler outcomes with provenance and confidence tiers.
    • Added graph queries for method and field relationships, capability checks, and detection of shared-work and fusion candidates.
    • Added an example that checks result equivalence and compares candidate fusion performance with a scalar reference across CPU tiers.
  • Documentation
    • Added a research plan and status-board entry documenting measured results, correctness checks, and current limitations, including multi-hop queries and graph persistence.

A projection of a MethodTable and its specs into typed node/edge rows: class,
method, field (concept + seal + name), condition and fold (under reading),
law, lowered programs, their mask-risc primitives and lowering, compiler
refusals, claim grades, compute edges, capabilities, tests. Each edge
carries its tier (declared / derived / compiled / verified / hypothesis),
the method it was written within, and provenance (file, revision, seal,
reading).

The edge table implements quack's Binder, so dependency questions are
Drafts that bind, lower and run on mask-risc: one program, ScatterOrU32 to
the owning method as the demanded result. Structural verdicts are the
compiler's (MethodTable::prepare, compute_dag_is_acyclic); the graph records
them and adds no competing rule.

Tests (16) cover the projection of #1504's billable_hours, query A
(dependency), B (refusals, incl. the hypothesized duration claim), C
(capability status: shipped only from a compiled program; demonstrated
only from a compiled refusal), D (shared predicates and per-fold rescans),
H1 (fuse predicate into MaskedSumI32, NULL obligation from the program's
gate planes), falsifiers 1-10, and a transparent MDL measure with a
label-vs-identity counterexample.

A disable run showed blocked_by's compiled-refusal guard was never
exercised. The case that exercises it (a refusal noted by hand, then the
compiler's) found a second defect: claim() picked the target's kind from a
narrow prefix check, so a noted refusal became a Capability node and the
compiler's later refusal reused it. A node's kind now comes from its
identity prefix (kind_of), interning asserts it, and an identity with no
known prefix is refused.

…belled timing

Projects two prepared methods, asks the graph (through Quack) which
programs use MaskedSumI32 and which are fusion candidates, times each
candidate against a fused scalar reference after asserting both give the
same answer, and records the timings as Measurements on the compiled and
detected tier. A cost asked for another tier is refused (TierMismatch).

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 986ea

The new awareness graph lets a recorded claim mark a capability as shipped or demonstrated without compiler evidence. This undermines the evidence guarantees the PR describes. Restrict the tiers claim can write before merging. Re-projecting a method can also leave stale results, and the board records have small count inconsistencies.

STATUS_BOARD: both sides prepended a section; kept D-SAG-1 then D-CMH-G1,
D-SAG-1-5 marked unblocked. G1's Cond::Method and MethodBody::Select made the
projection non-exhaustive; it now projects a reference as a declared CALLS
edge to the method the table resolves (D-SAG-1-5) and a predicate's filter
like any other. New test: callers found through Quack, and a reference cycle
recorded as the compiler's MethodCycle.

CodeRabbit on #1509. claim() wrote at any tier, so a note at Tier::Compiled
could ship a capability (capability() reads the tier) or demonstrate a gap
(blocked_by() accepts any compiled RefusedFor). It now refuses Compiled and
Verified; only project, add_program, project_compute, blocked_by and certify
write those. project() only added edges, so re-projecting a key kept its old
structure, programs and VerifiedBy next to the new verdict; it now drops
every edge written within the method before re-linking.

Tests a_claim_cannot_take_the_compiled_or_verified_tier and
a_reprojection_replaces_the_methods_earlier_edges, both red before the fix.
Plan and board counts updated (19 awareness tests; D-SAG-1-5 in the PR).

Research follow-up to merged #1509: draft PR #1515 begins at #1509's merge commit. Documentation only, no runtime/ABI or stored semantics changes.

It consolidates merged #1496..#1499 into D-SAG-2, a Claude Code research prompt and three primary-source .arxiv extracts and falsification matrices.

Gates preserved: current SAG is source-backed/one-hop; D-SAG-1-4 multi-hop and D-SAG-1-6 persistence remain queued. H1 measured current tiled overhead, not a fused SIMD win; nothing auto-applies an optimization. New work asks about source-addressable code context and measured LLM token savings, NARS/ONA/PLN evidence and attention separation, Hyperon reflection and metagraph semantics, noisy Shannon vs valid BALD, relational episode reappraisal, four optional functional appraisal policy labels, disagreement without source penalty, and default-deny permission/rollback.

All new behavioral probes D-SAG-2-1..10 remain unimplemented and unauthorised.
